Player Archie Gray

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Yeah lad needs a loan. With this much first team PL experience under his belt it shouldn't be hard to find a bottom end PL or upper end Champ team that will play him in midfield.

He's so young and has some really promising qualities but he's nowhere near top 6 quality yet and we can't just carry a player in such a key position in the vain hope he suddenly makes a huge leap in development.

I worry that due to his fee there will be internal pressure to keep him at the club, but reality is what he needs is consistent minutes in midfield and we can't afford to give him that at Spurs right now. Especially as he's blocking Bergvall's path to minutes, who genuinely does look like an elite talent.
I agree. A club like Spurs should be aiming at top six NOW. Not in 2 or 3 years, regardless of where we finished last season.
Archie Gray is not a top 6 player. Not yet anyway.

Gray is quality. Intelligent, technical, mature and able to cover multiple positions.

I admit, I thought he was more ready to come in and dominate from the get go. I underestimated how tough the prem is for teenagers these days.

He's still the top British teenage CM getting minutes in the PL. I get that you don't see it, that's fine.
I would take Lewis Miley who is significantly better and getting more minutes over him and actually younger, any day of the week

What games are you saying he had a good performance?

Burnley
PSG away
He was our best midfielder and scored the winner against Palace
There was another game where he was the only player making runs beyond the attacking players and in behind the full back.
Sunderland we were 1-0 and lost control of the game as soon as he went off because none of our other midfielders will make runs in behind and they give the ball away when Gray doesn’t.

Generally he’s the most disciplined midfielder we have for being there to cover the back 4 and also making runs beyond the front 3 to stretch the opposition. He has the highest pass completion % in the team I think. Definitely isn’t as careless with his passing as the others.

He would most likely have had a loan were it not for the revolving door of injuries. At least I would have hoped he would. Ideally next season he gets a PL loan, and in London. I like the loanees to be local, especially if they're not from London. It's good for them to get a firm feel for where they live, not where they are temporarily staying. Looking at the likes of Brentford and Palace, Fulham too, not to diminish those sides at all, they all play pretty fluid football...and have a history of doing business with other London clubs.

Gray's senior minutes are far beyond what he could have expected, and in batshit mental conditions. The hope has to be that they stand in good stead for his and our future.

He was comfortably the worst midfielders out of the 3 against Burnley but agree with PSG.
Against Palace he scored but that was the exact game where you stated he was having a great game and the stats would prove it (prior to him scoring) and it showed he simply wasn't.

His pass completions stats are so high because his progressive passes is in the:
2% percentile
Meaning he rarely does any forward passes. It's sideways or backwards and it's easier to pass back to the defenders/goalkeeper.

His shot creating chances is a staggering 1% percentile meaning again, he's not passing it forward or attempting anything imaginative.

Also just an fyi his attempted passes is in the 43% percentile meaning he's even below average at that...this is why his pass completion is so high..it's literally nothing to be happy about.

He's guilty of the exact thing you try and criticise Palhinha about (fyi palhinha's shot creating chances are at 8%, his progressive passes at 15% and attempted passes at 46%) meaning he's better at Gray at the things hes supposedly shit at. then you add
99% tackles
91% blocks
84% aerials won
75% assists
87% non penalty goals
72% non penalty xG

and you say to yourself "well there you go, that's what he offers". You on the other hand are super critical about Palhinhas lack of progressive passes but close your eyes at Grays absolute tragic stats all over the board and say "yeh yeh yeh but he played well"?? what??

Our midfield all have tragic stats because we don’t use our midfield… hard to really judge any of them.

Disagree on Burnley, lots of people felt he found his confidence and bossed that game. Winning duels, spraying passes. Then Frank dropped him to force the Palinha Bentancur double pivot, which has been the worst MF pair I can remember at Spurs. Granted because of the combo and tactics as well, but still.

Against Palace I was wrong about 1 stat, which I think was touches. He was still one of the best performers that game.

yet you do exactly that?????????????

you judge Bentancur and Palhinha continuously? you state exactly what their faults are time and time again but when the stats show Gray is the absolute worst of the lot you now state its hard to judge any of them? do you not understand why i call you a hypocrite??

i critique all players equally and don't post based on my biased opinion. I want the team to do well, i don't care if i'm wrong, i dont give a shit what player gets us the 3 points, i don't make reason after reason for inept performances just because i like the player.

Gray is starting every game.

Miley is a different player but Gray is ahead of him.
#Er.

Miley is starting every game, in fact has played full 90 minutes in 8 of last 9 games for example, mainly at the expense of Sandro Tonali, who has mainly be relegated to the subs bench.

Gray has played full 90 minutes in 2 matches all season, and no didn't start last game. He has started 7 all season, and all basically to cover injuries, plus the rotation from Super Cup team for first game of season, whereas Miley has forced his way in to starting line up.

I will however concede to the specific that he is the best English teenage midfielder playing for Spurs with the initials AG if that is of some comfort to you.

We have no option though, even if we buy another midfielder this window and have Sarr and Bissouma returning we need to keep him this window. But assuming, big assumption, we can get a semi coherent squad next season he would be one to go out on loan in reality

Gray started 7 of the last 8. Definitely started the last game

Miley has been playing full back as well. He’s basically where Gray was last year

Honestly, I think Archie Gray (and Bergwall to an extent) will benefit most from us signing Gallagher, and not JUST for him to learn alongside when he plays, but to take the pressure off HAVING to play in every game!

He can be picked on merit rather than necessity, and MAYBE nail down whatever CM suits him best...

Personally, I think he'll be a 6 long after Paulinha has departed, but if he IS to play more as an 8, then he can do it and interchange when maybe the opposition is more favourable for us to experiment - like in the Cups🙄 ...but for the now, we have an oven ready Gallagher to step in.

I think this'll work wonders for him going forward...

If our players had half that fanboy's persistence & conviction, we'd be top of the league.

We all want our players to be special and think they’ll kick on but reality has to kick in at some point. Archie is still a kid but in his game there is not one outstanding attribute. You can say he’s an athlete but 99.9% of midfielders nowadays are. He’s not going to dictate a game, play defence splitting passes, play quick one twos, bully players, press aggressively and score goals. You have to be very good at some of those things but I don’t think he is and just see an ok midfielder at best. I’m not slating him but I’m not going to get excited by something that’s not there. You can put Sarr in the same bracket. Bergvall has more and shown glimpses of what he can do but he’s another one that has to take his game to the next level.
I guarantee you that Gallagher will show more of those things I mentioned than any of these guys within 2 games.
I’d love Gray,Sarr and Bergvall to be incredible and be our midfield 3 for the next decade but sadly it won’t work out that way. People need to take the blinkers off and be realistic.
