He cannot spot a diagonal pass, or doesn't fancy himself converting one even under the most favourable circumstances. I don't know which is worse.

Dortmund were playing with wingbacks instead of actual fullbacks to begin with; and their left wingback got sent off. Those diagonal passes to the right should've been the first option to seek in situations like these.

This has nothing to do with Frank either; as managers like him who prefer more direct football would welcome such no-risk-nonzero-reward passes.

Discouraging to say the least.
and the one he did was poorly hit right? the thing i noticed was just prior to odoberts first assist, he fluffed the cross...

Somebody gets it.

He will always go for the easier pass and I doubt that will ever change.

You mean this?

That's Simons not Gray; I included this in the original post to better illustrate the simple nature of the said pass. It was a good enough hit.

I'd prefer a non-perfect diagonal ball over a perfect [but also pointless] sideways / backwards pass anyway: It's about intent.

As I've said, these sequences indicate a player who either suffers from some serious tunnel vision or is afraid of his own shadow. Neither is good.

Maybe he's just playing safe, as a young player often does, and as Im sure Frank prefers

Plenty of time for him to develop

Of course id like to see more from him

But I'm not sure I'm worried about him at this point

Why would he have to play safe? He’s 18 and should be fearless. That diagonal psss is very easy to make though but won’t do it. He has a 20 yard area to hit from 30/40 yards away which will instantly get our wide player isolated 1 v 1 with a defender but would rather play a safe square 10 yard pass. That’s poor.

Looks like tactical instruction to me. When the diagonal behind the full back is even half on, he tries it. The other day people were digging him out for playing one to Tel because it didn’t come off, even though the one before found Davies in a very dangerous area.

That diag to Porro is being left open by Dortmund because they can just shift over when the ball is in the air. Simons played 1 or 2 but not much came of them

100% he has a lot of room to improve

But he's also doing well, considering the absolute chaos his time has been with us

One of those players, I think under a manager with a decent system of play, he can thrive

Bergvall too

Think he's progressing fine. He's got passing in his locker - remember the 40 yard outside of boot through ball he played in the League cup semi vs Liverpool?

If he's playing "safe" it's a confidence thing or a coaching instruction. It's not because he doesn't have the tools in his locker.

His price tag wasn't his fault.

I'm completely lost on this one now. Of course the price tag was ridiculous which was not his fault and I get he's played in several positions including emergency CB but he just doesnt excel at anything. He came on today and every pass baring one was backwards and the one that wasn't backwards was a side pass. I think hes completely confused and his confidence seems very low. I do think a proper manager might put him on a path to success but so much damage has been done, I'm not sure he will ever fulfil the inflated potential everyone thought he had. Real shame but this is the clubs new MO. Nobody comes here and improves as a player. Look at Gallagher. Top player at Palace, Chavs and A. Madrid... comes here and looks like a poor mans David Howells.
