What other striker on the market should we have got at the time, and why?
I would have to research who was available.
But in principle..
A more agile front player. With some pace.
Pretty easy to get someone for a lot less.
Or two players.
We were never going to get a like-for-like replacement for Kane and didn't need to.
We used to do fine when Kane was injured.
Llorente and Vincious were good signings because they did not cost a lot. So came in as plan b squad players.
Solanke was a terrible signing because - we knew because of the fee he would be first pick for a long time. It panned out exactly as predicted.
I dare you to have a look on the market that Summer and come up with a better name than him who we could have signed.
Easy - any other PL front player.
Please name one who is worse than Solanke?

He has a decent first touch and runs a lot.
So has/does Gallagher and get gets next level hate.
I never rated Lucas Moura. But I'd take his random chaosball over Solanke anonymity all day.
This is what happens when a manager from lower league football gets a job above his station.
I knew he was hurting us, but I didn't realise the damage would ripple on for so long.
Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins, the fella Bournemouth replaced him with, Nicolas Jackson, Serhou Guirassy, probably Oshimen, etc, etc, etc.
Loads of players around the league and other leagues could have come, probably for less, and been better.
That said, they could also have missed the 48 games that Solanke has missed to date due to a negligent coach and medical staff

I wanted him. Before we even showed an interest it was one I favoured. He looked good at Bournemouth.

Hadn't Solanke just bagged 19 goals in the prem the season before? I'm not a big fan of his but it's not like he'd just had a season playing like he has for us tbf.
Yeah to your and Simon's point Im sure he'd be a lot more effective with some talented players on either side of him.
As much as we don't (can't) play to his strengths, he can't play in a way that his team needs.
He isn't good enough. Period. The lack of service is not inaccurate but it help blinds the facts.
Decent and that's about it. With better service he would probably offer a bit more but where do you stop with such an argument.

You could have 100% have got Guirassy from Dortmund for the money we spent they would gift wrap him and carry him over on a sedan on their shoulders. Jackson too. And both are much much better than Solanke.

I could name 20 players - but it's easier and quicker to say everyone.
All are better or the same.
The fact he needs the ball served up like Romano before tapping in is a problem for me. People call Haaland a lazy poacher, but even he can do half the job himself.
But we don't. And because we don't we should be looking at a system that does create goal scoring opportunities.
For me, the best be we have, is players getting in to the box and making defenders lives hard. Richarlison is good at that. Gallagher is good at that. Sarr can be quite a nuisance. Palhinha has outscored everyone doing this on a minutes per goal basis whilst also being the leagues top tackler.
