Player Dominic Solanke

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Because £65m was his release clause (was actually £55m with £10m add ons)

Some fans raised eyebrows, some didn't...some people would have raised eyebrows if we went for DCL and Welbeck, people would have moaned regardless.

Yeah so basically we don't know how any of these players would have worked out, going by our transfer activity and how our players have fared over the past few years then the logical conclusion is that they would have probably gone the same way or similar to Solanke.
He's done quite well this season but DCL would've been a catastrophically bad signing 2 years ago. He'd had persistent injuries for 2 seasons running and scored 7 goals in all comps over that period (and 3 of those were pens). Not to mention he was statistically one of the worst finishers in the league about 3 seasons running. I remember him famously breaking his duck against us (of course) after a horrific dry spell.

Solanke's been shit but people would've quite rightly gone mental if we'd gone for DCL.

IIRC it was quite a tricky market for strikers. Maaaaaybe we could've got Alvarez if we'd really pushed the boat out while Osimhen would've demanded very silly wages to the extent even the uber rich PL clubs didn't go there. Solanke was a bit of a bland compromise signing that I didn't love, but not sure there were too many great options on the market.

We should've pushed hard for Alvarez but suspect he always would've preferred Atleti.

Alvarez is pure nonsense crackhead talk, £220k a week going to one of the big 3 in Spain from City, he was never signing for us (gotta love this fanbase lol)

The DCL shout was hilarious though the funny thing is in another world we would have got DCL and Solanke would have gone to Leeds and I absolutely guarantee the same things moaning about him now would be pining for him.

You're right though, the options on the market back then weren't great, just like they aren't great now.

Ah didn't even know he was on that much. And tbh even if Levy had a personality transplant and offered him 250k or something, he's likely choosing Champions League and nice weather in Spain over Spurs in Europa anyway.

Just looked up Osimhen and apparently he's on 360k Euros a week lol.

Conor Gallagher makes £200k pw, he'd be by far our best player and statement signing post Harry. Again, Levynomics dictated that getting a 27 year old, who's been in English football the vast majority of his career and broke 10 PL goals one time, was worth over 70% of those wages and 80% of the transfer fee. That was absolutely doable, he just decided, as he always did, the cheaper option was better. Absolutely could've thrown more money than Atleti could offer, but that's not how he operated, and why we're where we are.

Could've used the Kane money for that, but nope, we spent it on Solanke and Tel, who cost much more than Alvarez.

But sure, not possible.

Didn’t Mido recommend Marmoush to us?
Marmoush was a weird one. He was plodding along in Frankfurt doing fine without much fanfare then suddenly had an incredible 6 months - 20 in 26 games - and immediately got snapped up by City.

He wasn't bad the season prior but it was that crazy form that put him on everyone's radar and once City got involved no-one else has a sniff.

Pretty much, we were never an option, the 3rd best striker in the world doesnt choose Spurs, that's the long and the short of it, delulu's think we can just throw money at players like that and they will come, not how it wotks :moursad:

We can take solace in the fact he would have broken his ankle and dome his achilees 3 times though if he signed for us.

Yeah Osimhen's net pay over in Turkey is pretty close to his gross pay so any Prem teams looking to sign him would have to pay him £450k a week or something like that, probably why Utd didn't want to go near him.

I think you’re on crack if you’re saying a player who has scored 8 goals in la liga this season is the 3rd best striker in the world.
And 3 of those goals came in one game.

Delusional doesn’t come close!!

Out of interest who are the two in front of him in your crazy world??

I was talking about him when he signed for Atletico in 2024 but I forgot about Kane for some weird reason.

But in any case I'll bite - I think he's definitely a top level striker and I think he's easily top 5 now...Kane, Haaland, Osimhen, Dembele, Alvarez in some sort of order.

Well. Your 5.
And then 5 others!!

Let’s say.
Mbappe. Big Robbie. The inter guy - Martinez??, Vinicius Jnr and then one other.

The French guy. That other Brazilian dude. The Dutch fellow. The Swedish geezer.

You get my drift…… there’s choices.
You're better than this.
You know full well his only purpose on this forum is to take the contrarian position and argue tooth and nail. Constantly.

Hit ignore and move on.

Nogoaldo was pretty awful.
And the £30m he cost in 2013 is worse than the £60m we paid for Solanke 11 years later.
The Soldado signing was another example of us signing the wrong player for our system, or not changing to suit him. He scored a shitload in Spain as a poacher feeding off two wide men putting the ball on the deck for him around the penalty spot. We didnt play like that when he was here, AVB used inverted wingers coming inside all the time. So a silly signing in hindsight

Soldado had loads of scoring opportunities. I really don't think it was a lack of service that caused him to fail as much as it was a failure to adapt to the more aggressive closing down of the English game. He just didn't have the comfort of taking his time to place his shots, so he'd put them wide.

Weren’t we worried about home grown quotas when we signed Solanke? Probably reduced the options to him, Watkins, DLC, Toney or Tammy Abraham.

And we know why we wouldn’t have signed any of those guys.
