I absolutely have an issue with the signing of Gray. At £40m he was a luxury signing, we had massively urgent problems in the squad that summer that we neglected to bring in a raw 18 year old to rotate along our defensive line for depth. He was a signing for a City, Woolwich or Liverpool to make, not a Tottenham team in obvious need of surgery.

It was fucking awful business from us.
I share the frustration that we didn't go out and fix the urgent issues in our squad. It's beyond a joke that the (now, formerly) 9th richest club in world football has such a cowardly recruitment strategy.

We should have gone out and bought a top class CM to come in and make an immediate impact. My point is that I'm not mad that we bought Gray, even though we definitely bought him for the wrong reasons. I think he's pretty good and has potential. I agree that we overpaid but I guess you could argue that's the English premium. In a few years I hope that he and Bergvall turn out to be mustard and we look back on these shitty years and laugh.

Yeah it really wasn't what we needed that window.

NGL I got really excited at the time as I thought that he could potentially cover for us at both RB and CDM - two areas where we were sorely lacking. Problem is, we basically needed Gray to be at a PL standard from the get-go and even 2 years later he's still not really got a defined position or looked like a reliable top half-standard PL player. He's very talented but he's still just a prospect.

To allocate such a huge chunk of our budget to what was, essentially, an opportunistic buy that we seemingly only pushed through because Brentford were in for him...it's just not good squad planning or practice.

Going into Ange's second season with European football we desperately needed some proven players to bulk out the squad, especially as we let about 5 players in their mid-20s leave. Instead we signed 3 teenagers and Solanke. And we all know the results.

The list of what we need is extensive .
I think one potential positive is that we've got a pretty big squad, so we can actually afford to trim a lot of fat off going into a season with no Europe without needing to buy a whole new squad at once.

A month or two ago when we were looking fucked and everyone was doing their potential Champ squads (hopefully that won't reemerge after the weekend) it's kind of amazing the number of players we can actually afford to lose and still have a relatively functional 11 with some decent potential in there, especially if we integrate a couple of the young loanees like Vuskovic and Moore.

We badly need to sign some proper quality, but I reckon we can sell/release about 8-9 players without it hurting us v.much at all. The complicating factor is all the long term injuries we've now got...

They're not dumb enough to sign 40 million pound 18 year olds when they make them themselves. Each of them have a factory line of solid academy prospects who have broken in or are in the process of breaking into their respective first teams. Even though we have a strong academy it's impossible to nurture them into such a broken, dysfunctional first team. Another example of why this club is so fucking arse about face .

Looks like Savingo might be available a a reduced rate?

What do people think?

I think wtf did City not just sell to us last summer? Since then he's hardly played (I think) and they've given him a new contract with higher wage, making the potential deal more costly for us for a player that was hardly a sure thing anyway...

Just City doing City things and ruining the entire market for funsies, similar to signing Marmoush and giving him ~300k+ per week when he was on about £40k at Frankfurt.

If we stay up, I bet it's going to be an uninspiring summer window...so long as PL money continues to pour in, they won't care. There's absolutely no one in Admin or management or recruitment or anyone else who really cares about the club, least of all ENIC.

Another reject for us...pitiful..
That's a bit of a nonsense take.

VDV was a Real Madrid reject.
Lucas Moura was a PSG reject (on the whole he was just OK but was responsible for the best Spurs moment in many of our times)
Salah and De Bruyne were Chelsea rejects.
Henry was a Juventus reject.

I'm not sold on Savinho one way or the other, but City being willing to sell him doesn't automatically mean he'd be a rubbish signing.

Sorry but I disagree...

In reckon you might well be right, because we'll have this guy:

:langetroll:
Or someone of his ilk in charge of shaping our squad.

It really shouldn't be the case though, even with modest ambition, in a League where you see Bournemouth, Brighton, and even Brentford acquiring good footballers that we'd happily see brought here, how on Earth are Spurs signing cloggers, athletes, and players who don't even illicit a shrug?

I know we've had absurd injury issues, but looking at the available matchday squads over the last few months and you couldn't point to a pair of technical footballers among them.

It's just depressing, most of us support this club because we want to see a side with a certain type of attitude, who will if all else fails at least play good stuff.

We need to sign some proper footballers this summer, whatever division we're in, and I have no faith in the people at the club to do that.

Pep lost the plot a bit in terms of team construction over the last couple years.

As always, Alex Ferguson's ability to continually reinvent his team was his greatest gift.

He's shit, doesn't have any brains and runs down blind alleys, a Lucas Moura re-gen.

So your issue isn't really with the signing of Gray, it's with Lange and the board for failing to strengthen the squad?

I'd say that we should always be on the hunt for young British talent before they get to the 'big clubs' but it shouldn't be at the cost of the first team.
Just that Lange is shite at building a first team.

Read that Sky piece. There'll be no money.

"It means Tottenham are heading for a difficult summer to stay in line with Premier League financial rules. "

Cue the other usual excuses...selling club moved the goalposts last minute, player's wife preferred schools in X, he was abducted by Chavs/Arse on his way to our medical centre, we nearly signed Semenyo, the summer window is a very tricky market, we couldn't find anyone to improve our first XI, we didn't wanna panic...

Nothing will happen until after the World Cup either as players who are there, and looking to move, will know a good performance there and they can demand higher wages.

James Rodriguez etc.

Don’t the squad cost ratio rules come in next season? We should still have a decent revenue if we stay up.
