I think De Zerbi used young players at Brighton …Hinshelwood, Buonanotte, Ferguson.
But he wasn't as keen on it at Marseille.
During his spell there they focused on bringing in players with first team experience. Not necessarily senior citizens but players with a couple of years playing first team football at least.

We'll see if a middle ground can be struck.

Moore, Devine, Lankshear, Phillips, Vuskovic and Donley have all been playing regular first team football, just not with us.
I hope he gives them a chance to show what they can do under him.
All of those seem to me to fit the style he is looking for, it’s just whether he thinks they are good enough to contribute.

He was superb last night, in the first half especially but did fade a disappear for a while in the second.
Fantastic vision and ability but I do have some concerns about his fitness and mobility, and the fact that he doesn't seem to be a "natural athlete".

It sounds almost harsh but I'm almost thinking that there's a touch of the Huddlestone about him.

He would need alot of energy around him but in the right midfield he would be a great signing.

It's a part of it. When you have the ball you have to retain possession at times so you dont give it away and expose your defense to repeated counter attacks. The more pressure they're under the more likely they are to give up goals.

A lot of goals being conceded are usually down to midfielders not tracking runners and helping the defense out as well as the attack losing the ball with a misplaced pass to begin with.
I know i know!

I don't think it's the plates shifting, more a concern about the depth of the turf not being sufficient to provide enough cushioning.
Not something you'd expect to be an issue with Levy fastidious attention to detail but 4 acl's in a year needs to be looked into, it's not normal.

I don't necessarily prescribe to the stadium pitch being an issue but there's an issue somewhere and it's good that they're investigating it.

I still think its as much a hangover from Ange as anything.

All those players injured with hammys, so others getting terribly overplayed, 2 years of relentless sprinting....

Squad management will be a big part as well.

I said Porro getting injured this season was because we never got back up to Udogie, which sounds daft - until you realise Porros RB over was playing all season at LB and so Porro put in a ridiculous amount of games...

Id say theres a compounding effect, once one player falls the others are picking up more load, some unreasonably so, and so they fall - and the pressure mounts on those left standing.

Different models and objectives though - hard to say what RDZs actual preferences are?

Brighton - stay up, maybe get into europe, by low sell high

Marseille - CL, we want to challenge PSG

Think he was injured last night tbh. Wasn’t even suppose to start at 4pm yesterday when they were doing the build up!

I got pelters for questioning him a while back

Wonderful talent, but he needs to be accomodated to thrive

Look at the team they usually play, 3 behind him, 1 next to him doing all the pressing, 2 wing backs offering more support - leaves him free to just get on the ball where he likes and try to play vertical balls to the 2 x 10s or striker

I have real reservations about him in a 4-2-3-1 where he would have to defend and attack, where he would have to get round the pitch more...

Not solely no but not having adequate attackers who can hold onto the ball and recycle it properly ends up losing it and inevitably puts pressure on the defence.

Are you new to football or something? Reminds me when the media were confused and questioned Pep when he said that he doesn't need to teach his players how to tackle because his forwards were good enough to use the ball adequately and counter press/tactical foul when they lose it.

Same logic as an attack won't function properly if your deepest players can't pass/build up, it's a team game.
Ehh no!?

I just don't agree that it's such a big problem that signing wingers and strikers should be first on the priority list!?

Porro, Romero, Udogie, are all horrible defensively. I just think we should start there first.

And we also need som experienced ball-playing midfielders first.

Honestly fuck this club. Im done. Three days gone and they start pissing me off again

This is not what we need. Huge wages for somebody who wont be significant on the pitch.
I see where they’re coming from with the signing. Cheap, home grown (I think?), experienced, slots in perfectly to replace Davies etc etc.

But, I would be the same as you. We’ve needed a proper new LB for years. I think Udogie has proven over the last few seasons that he a)can’t stay fit and b) just isn’t very good at a lot of facets of the game. Contrary to popular belief I think he is a good defender, but he is absolutely woeful in an attacking sense, in fact I would say one of the worst in the league. He will really struggle with De Zerbi ball I fear.

Robertson comes in as a clear back up option as opposed to genuine competition for Udogie, which is what was needed, but I think they’ve made such a horrible mess of the squad in general that left back again gets pushed to the wayside with other positions a priority.

Its a step in the right direction.

Proper cover is a massive improvement on having to rely on Spence.

Its better to have left footers at LB, and it means we have options at RB too (plenty of games where Spence would be preferable to Porro)

Its a free, as well.

If we get Robertson and Sensi we go from

Porro - Romero - VDV - Udogie
Spence - Danso - ..... - Spence
........... - Dragusin - ..... - .......

To

Porro - Romero - VDV - Udogie
Spence - Danso - Sensi - Robertson

We can sell Dragusin to add to the pot for more expensive attacking options.

Ive no idea if Souza is that good or not, but it also buys him a year for a loan, maybe he can come back into the squad next season if he develops

Romero will be off and Porro, Udogie will most likely be here next season unless you think we can upgrade 3 of our back 4 which isn't realistic. There's also such thing as coaching and Porro and Udogie can benefit from that next season whilst it's clear that we need attacking reinforcements.

Agreed that we need a ball playing mid however ultimately it doesn't matter where we start and what we proritise anyway, as long as we've done what's needed come the end of the window.

Saw a tweet last night, no idea if its true or not but apparently

Wolves will get something like 117m for getting relegated

Inter get 14m for winning Serie A

Surely that cant be true?
It is apparently and it's no wonder that the smallest clubs in England can go out and buy the brightest young talents in Europe.
We praise the scouting of the likes of Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth and yes, it's good but they can also outspend pretty much every club in Europe, so can hoover up the talent that's not quite good enough for the big clubs yet!

The anomalies are the likes of Bayern, Psg and the Spanish giants but that can't realistically continue.
Even the Italian giants are struggling now.
If the PL bubble doesn't burst, it's hard to see anything but English domination in the future which will be pretty bad for the worldwide game really.

Turns out its not true - but even so your point is bang on - the disparity in £££ between the PL and the rest is insane

Haha no that is nonsense, Italian teams get TV money even distribution, merit payments and popularity payments. Inter finishing top would have taken hom around €85m
Interesting and although the initial figure was just the cash for league placement, it's still a lot less than the worst team in the PL, who then get parachute payments too.
It's a massive disparity.

I think Wharton iis similar to Odegaard Ibut maybe without the finishing ability.

To get the best out of him he would need pretty much the same kind of ballast that Rice et al provide, because he doesn't cover the ground as ably as someone like an Anderson.

And what we don't know is the type of player De Zerbi is seeking, or the degree and extent of input he will have in any such decision.

Would be a good signing and looks like the right level of quality that we need, but yesterday was against inferior opposition.
