Is he though? High potential but lacks consistency and as you say, character is an issue
The way people use the term "potential" gets very confused.

Leao was one of the best attacking players on earth for several years, full stop, and is fit and in his physical prime.

But he kind of seems like he's stopped caring about his football and performances have dipped.

2023 Leao would be one of the best players in the Premier League.

Savinho on the other hand had one very productive season as an on-loan teenager for a fairytale Girona side and has spent two years thereafter making that look like a fluke.

Yeah don’t disagree but was Leao consistently good, or just flashes for highlight reels? I honestly don’t know

Serie A's most valuable player in 21-22 and Team of the Season 21-22, 22-23, and 23-24.

Also sliced Conte's Spurs to absolute ribbons over two legs in the CL in 2023, if you recall.

In that universe? He has had zero international impact. 0 goals 0 assists at the 2024 Euros. His CL record is ok but not exceptional, and whilst his serie a record is very good, it’s serie fucking A.

He at best was Rashford level. Without the top level CL impact, and Rashford had a better international record too.

He’s always been potential. Very fun to watch but insanely lazy with decent production but not enough to make up for that. At no point has he been one of the very best players.

I think we can agree on Leao and Rashford being comparable players in talent, value and trustworthiness terms.

I think we should be extremely skeptical of both of them as transfer targets, do not misunderstand me there.

But those are players who have reached very significant levels in the game, "potential" is the wrong word to use, and comparisons to Savinho are absurd, they have nothing but a position on the field in common.

Two seasons ago -

Great -

Not amazing, not world-class, not incredible - great.

Had assists and key passes per 90 alongside the top players in the league

In his first season

at 21

relatively speaking, in 24/25 he was great.

Lost market value, his place in the Brazil team, and Pep's faith, but sure, whatever.

And to whatever extent 24/25 can be read as a worrying indicator, 25/26 comprehensively confirmed that reading.

Every single clip in that video where he receives the ball in space out wide in a typical winger position is exactly why I get excited about this transfer.
Im not sure how the 1v1 stats bare out but he is almost elite in those typical winger recieves the ball out wide in space, support abit lacking situations. Stands up the fullback and attacks them with his speed, quick feet and unpredictability.
People can point to lack of goals etc but it doesnt show the whole picture whatsoever. We are tottenham and teams won't setup against us as though we are city and with kudus on the other wing (eventually) i think its exciting.
City are typically a team that will play that extra pass in and around the penalty box. He seems to play alot of passes that then lead to the assist for a goal and he does it through getting fullbacks out of shape and needing help and then offloading it to somebody who has taken the freed up space.

If he signs then im delighted with his signing. I have a feeling his player thread will definitely be one to re-visit the start of after a few seasons to see how people opinions on him changed greatly over time.

I can handle a good tryer, but I can't handle a great slouch.
