At least one Jewish friend isn't exactly pleased:Whelan busting out the "I have Jewish friends" defence http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30139723
A movie from 20 years ago isn't perhaps the best example for your point on contemporary views. And what doesn't he understand? He understands what he thinks. What he thinks is racist. It's pretty simple.I think it's a bit daft these days how much people want to point the finger at someone and go "look he's evil" when it's clear that people are saying things they perhaps don't understand, rather than actually being anti-semitic.
There's acceptable racism though, so how can a layman understand the difference?

Probably not. But it's s pretty good example of the character of the man when those are the qualities of his "friends".Of all the Jews to be 'offended', one who helps bankroll a club full of Hissing-Gas Chamber Mocking inbred fans probably isn't the ideal person to be getting up on his high Jewish horse!
(that's right, horses can be Jewish too... you wanna see the size of the foreskin!)
I comprehend it just fine. I'm taking a view shared many actually in the UK, and I take an interest because of the effect those kinds of attitudes have on a large % of my relatives who happen to live there.I doubt he means any harm, ill-intent or aggression in what he is saying. The media just love it because they can spin it in the best way that gets them viewers, newspaper sales or 'clicks'.
As a species we wouldn't last 5 minutes if we didn't naturally generalise in some way. If we, thousands of years ago, treated dangerous animals as individuals then people would die all the time and we'd probably be extinct. Knowing that, for example, all Sharks are likely to chew on you and all Crocodiles will probably want to eat you isn't perhaps 100% correct, but it's an evolutionary survival mechanism. Being preconditioned to apply caution to 'groups' is wide-spread in nature.
What we general have with 'racism' (more the pointy finger of hatred version rather than the actual definition) is an expectation for people to never make any comment ever about anything other than individuals. Unless it suits the media.
If you pick up the papers in the UK it will teach you (or attempt to) that "all Romanians are immigrants who want to steal your taxes and laugh at you" or "all Muslims are terrorists" or "all Polish people are stealing your jobs". These are all examples of racial prejudice that exist within the media to try to condition people into a certain way of thinking.
The media exert more racist views that are loaded with malicious intent than the people they 'target' to sell newspaper stories about. Pop over into any ENIC/Levy/Gold & Sullivan thread on the internet and you'll find the exact same attitude expressed.
It's not okay, but it's also completely hypocritical for the media to condemn someone for lesser offences that they exhibit on a daily basis.
Moreover, I'd ask why you're getting so emotionally involved in what is a political issue that you're unlikely to be able to comprehend, due to cultural differences between the countries.
All the texts from Mackay and clownish quotes from Whelan are standard stuff you hear said amongst mates and 'friendly rivals' down any pub, building site or football ground. We can't deny that.
But you cannot say these things either at work or in public. It's not acceptable. Same way you wouldn't tell your boss to eff off or your gran how you think someone's a wanker.
Both Mackay and Whelan are in the wrong.
On a different note, imagine the comedy gold/ filth Boris Johnson must come up with at home? But he doesnt say it publicly- he probably has a top publicist.
I'd argue that sending a text involving the word "chinky" is pretty racist. Unless there's a meaning for that word I'm unaware of?
I know that I wouldn't want him anywhere near my business or my football club.
The fact that Mackay gets a job while the FA is still investigating is pretty gross.
What he said was racist and the fact that he said it in private doesn't make it any better. I may have said some bad things in private about people but never of the racial variety. Racism, homophobia, and sexism shouldn't be acceptable in the 2014 landscape. There's no qualifiers or excuses, it's abhorrent.
If I worked at Kick It Out or a similar organization I'd be ripping my hair out. Just another example of English football not giving a shit about being awful to minorities except for a few token moments of contrition. Awful stuff.
The way the NBA handled Sterling should be the example for our how racism is handled in sports in 2014.
