I think the feel good factor of 90 and 96 did a lot to remedy the aftermath of the peak 'hooligan culture' but England eventually became so bad that I see why more and more people have up. The FA didn't help with utter shite managerial appointments either.

That and we're a victim of having all our squad play for domestic teams with bitter rivalries (think about the French squad for example - there isn't quite the same thing).

My take: yes, a lot of people are coming out of the woodwork. We should foster that feel good factor though, as you can bet it'll have a great impact on the Euros in two years and so on.

I know the powers-that-be's inevitable take on things. I just resent the way we typically aren't allowed to embrace the 'togetherness' that events like these can conjur.... It just reeks of the kind of social freedoms we lost at the turn of the 90s (Criminal Justice Bill etc.).

....I very much had memories of 90/96 (& 86 too) in mind and what it would feel like to be revisiting those vibes on a series of sunny days on (eg) Victoria Park or Clapham Common; no entry fees or beer tents, just bring a bottle and/or picnic surrounded by friends, family and other like minds.... Memories that would no doubt last a lifetime; accessible to all regardless of expendable income.

For reference; I remember one year at Glastonbry (98?) they used the cinema field for England WC games and it was epic...

Was way too munted to remember much of the games tho.

As for newbie fans: 'Real' fan snobbery aside, everyone has to 'bust their cherry' at some point... The coming together over events like this can be bigger than the footy (or equivalent). Who cares if Tarquin-come-lately doesn't wear his England shirt again after July.... International tournaments are barely the same kind of 'eco-system' as the club game... Tarquin's no imminent threat to yours or my fortnightly seat at The Lane
