Wonder what Ivory Coast's odds were to win when they had just lost 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea and finished the group on 3 points with -3 GD relying on other games to go their way to qualify through the 3rd place table.

To be fair, the loses in the group stage were very much against the run of play, even the 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea, was a ludicrous smash and grab, where Ivory Coast had all the ball and EG kept breaking away and scoring.

So they start the tournament fully rested after almost 2 months break after PL (and all european leagues) but players come back to start PL and other european leagues knackered and with no pre-season for club managers tel them how they are playing in the up coming season.

Should be starting AFCON in early June (3 weeks recovery time after end of PL) and finishing in early July to give players 3-5 weeks to prepare for PL. That's far fairer for both sides.

Better still why have group stages and 24 sides in the finals AFTER qualification stages (more time away from the clubs paying their wages) - why not a MAXIMUM of say 12 or 16 sides. Same should go for other international competitions - EITHER qualification stages or a big competition, not both - the both is just money making for FIFA who have only so much corruption to fund
