The option to buy was pure idiocy. I would sack the muppet who sanctioned that on the spot.
I vaguely remember something about an option to buy in the deal that loaned him to Preston.
Is that right and if so can Spurs still retain him?
I think with an option to buy being given to Preston,, the only practical way for Spurs to stop Preston exercising it is to offer Devine a better deal to stay with Spurs, which no doubt would include Frank persuading him that Devine would get good first team playing time next season.
Alfie will still count as a List B next season and Club trained the season after (and we are likely to have less than 4 CT players that season), so Alfie's got one or two seasons to stake a claim, and even if it didn't work out his experience at Spurs (on top of previous loan experience) would allow him to move on to another club.
Preston could still ask to exercise the option but if Devine didn't want to go, there is no way Devine is forced to go. But I'm sure Preston would say Alfie would get more playing time there than at Spurs.
The reason why I think its madness to give an option in a loan deal for a young player such as Devine is we lose control of the players future !
Without knowing the price of the option, it is hard to say whether it will be exercised or not.

I would expect a heavy sell on and buy back clause stacked in Spurs favour if that is the case.
Devine looks more ready for the Spurs team than Archie Gray currently does; in my opinion.

Exactly, there is nothing stopping Preston from putting in a bid if there was no option but then we would decide.
I think loans are dealt with by Andy Scoulding - but I'd also expect input from Lange too as loans do have an impact on player transfers. I would think any buy options, sell options or buy back clause sums to be agreed with Levy/Vinnai, as with any other multi million pound contract - and with relatively low sell values having sell on and buy back clauses sounds sensible (Chelsea seem to sell players no better than Devine for £20m, so no reason for us not to get decent money)
Alfie Devine can play both as a deep lying midfielder and attacking midfielder so isn't directly comparable to Archie Gray, Personally I thought Devine made a good claim for first tea involvement last preseason, and was disappointed not to see him retained last season (when with injuries he might have got minutes) and not to have seen him more involved in preseason a month or so back, as I think he could handle the jump to PL.

If the option isn't something approaching the 20m mark I'd be really annoyed. He's clearly a talented lad. As someone above has posted, other teams seam to be able to get those sorts of fees for their academy prospects who they are prepared to let go.

Fear your right. I dont get it though. We got something approaching that for fucking kevin wimmer 10 years ago. And yet we will block any sort of route to the first team for a prosect like this and then let him go for a pittance.
If we want him to stay then we offer him a contract which he'd no doubt sign over joining Preston full time
