Really loving how confident he is and tries to express himself at every opportunity. Now he just needs to score a goal or two to keep moving up.

I almost feel disrespectful to Azza when i say this, but Townsend already seems to be a far more rounded player than Lennon, more of a goal threat, better delivery, more diverse in hisruns and movement, I think he offfers us more, which is a shame to say as I love Lennon and his pace and trickery can frighten any team and he can still do a job for us, but for now im more than happy for Townsend to solidify a spot in the starting XI

Loving Townsend, his potential is massive, bit more first team action would do him good. Can see him scoring some important goals for us. His speed, movement and vision is great.

AVB has also said that he is not happy with Roy Hodgson for calling up Andros Townsend.

Strange... According to The Sun, "Andre Villas-Boas sent Townsend a congratulatory text after the announcement — attaching an image of the Three Lions badge."...

The wizard is dead .... long live the new wing wizard

At the moment, whilst Townsend is in such a fearless mood I think you have to play him as much as possible. Hopefully the bench time will gee up Lennon a bit.

Lennon for me has been taking backward steps. Since his injury in the 09/10 season, he has seemed to want to check his run more and more. Where he would receive the ball and take off without a thought, he now constantly puts a foot on the ball before choosing his run. I can't help but think that part of that is him not wanting to take the oppositions studs, whereas Townsend will just go.

For me, Lennon has improved greatly technically but the tenaciousness that got him in the starting XI in the first place is drifting out, and I personally think he needs it in his game to be properly effective.

It's worth noting that in just half a season (09/10), he got a higher combined goals/assists than in any other full season (He was also leading the assists table before Christmas). Crosses came from all angles and you wouldn't know if he would deliver deep, hit the byline or check inside... He just doesn't do it anymore and I don't think he's lost pace, I think it's psychological...

...In my professional arm chair opinion of course... But I want my Azza back.

TBH from what AVB said about Townsend, I got the feeling he sees him as a player on the fringe of the first team and hasn't totally made his mind up about him yet. Sounds like AVB hopes (for the players state of mind) that England will still keep picking him if he is not playing regularly yet for Spurs or moves elsewhere. Like what happened to Livermore.

Could be totally wrong though.

My interpretation is AVB wants to keep him hungry and fight hard for a first team place. My bet guess is he told him this during preseason along with "if you work hard this year, you stand a great chance for England selection at the end of the season".
Now he has achieved this he might fear this could effect his motivation. But AVB's comments certainly show that he wants to control the message to the player and therefore manage him effectivly. Just a guess.

Whatever he really means, I think it's good as it shows that AVB is aware of the affect such a call-up and subsequent selection/non-selection may have and he rates Townsend enough to think about it, have a view on it that he wants to express, etc. I think Townsend has fantastic potential and I see him playing some games this year. To be honest - and this may not be popular - I think we need to sell Lennon for the sake of Townsend, and our other players to make sure that they get enough minutes. We have too many players who are too good to loan out and yet will struggle to get game time to improve and be happy, if we keep Lennon and as good as Lennon is (and he is) he has peaked because of his age, several other players we have could surpass him.

Agreed. Lennon is a good player who could still go for a decent fee were we to sell him sooner rather than later, as I believe his value will only deteriorate from here out with Spurs. Solid traditional right winger, just doesn't fit with the new system at Spurs. Assuming he doesn't go, I'd like to see him given a go on the left side. He's known for helping out his fullback, which would work well with Rose considering his defensive game could still use some more progress as well as allowing him to get into attacking positions more if we did need the cross from that side, and I'd like to see how Lennon does cutting in for a shot from that side. As is, I feel he's a better option over there than Siggy. Have pretty decent suspicion Siggy will be sold by next week.
