Not a fan of Andros, call him a headless chicken or maybe his position as an inverted winger nullify his talent, but prove me wrong Andros and batter Burnley on Sunday and be the fulcrum of our attack on the remaining games.

Merson wasn't necessarily wrong about Townsend being called up but it was unfair to single him without mentioning Walcott and Welbeck. Walcott is just back from injury and has barely even played and Welbeck has one goal in all of 2015. The argument for Welbeck that he always performs for England is one that can be equally used for Townsend.

As for the tweeting thing, who cares. Players motivate themselves in different ways. Michael Jordan remembered every person who had have slighted him in life and used it to motivate himself all through his career. Maybe a little criticism like that from Merson could help Townsend out. Every player is different. Merson is an epic cunt anyway.

Andros Townsend wants talks with Tottenham over his future

England winger is seeking discussions with Spurs this summer following interest from Serie A and a Premier League rival

England’s Turin hero Andros Townsend will seek reassurances over his Tottenham Hotspur future at the end of the season.

Townsend scored England’s equaliser against Italy on Tuesday night andTelegraph Sport can reveal at least one Serie A club are interested in signing the winger.

There is also interest from the Premier League in Townsend, who wants to be clear on where he stands at White Hart Lane before looking at his options.

Having become a regular member of manager Roy Hodgson’s England squad, Townsend is eager to be sure of playing first-team football in the run up to next summer’s Euro 2016 finals in France.

Townsend planned Merson rebuke 'for weeks'

The timing of Townsend’s goal in Turin could not have been better, as an Italian top-flight club have shown an interest in him over the past month and had scouts in the Juventus Stadium stands.

His goal against Italy has put Townsend ahead of Theo Walcott in Hodgson’s plans and the England manager has reaffirmed his belief in the player.
Townsend has been in and out of the Spurs team under Pochettino since missing the World Cup through injury.

He has started the last five successive Tottenham games, but is often the first player to be substituted at around the 60-minute mark.

Pochettino is expected to sign Jay Rodriguez from former club Southampton this summer, which will increase competition in the forward positions at Spurs.

There also remains an issue surrounding £30million record signing Erik Lamela, who was preferred to Townsend during the first half of the season.
Townsend signed a four-year contract with Spurs in October 2013, having scored on his England debut against Montenegro.

There was interest in the 23-year-old from Southampton last summer and the St Mary’s club could look at Townsend again.

Townsend was sent out on loan to nine different clubs before making his breakthrough at Tottenham, where he has made 83 appearances, scoring 12 goals.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has told the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust that the club will look to recruit young players around the £10m-£15m price range this summer.

Rodriguez fits into that philosophy, which underlines the acceptance inside White Hart Lane that signings such as Lamela and striker Roberto Soldado have not worked out for the club.

Levy promised that he will ring fence a percentage of available cash for transfers while Spurs build their new £400m stadium. The club also see holding on to star players such as Harry Kane and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as a priority.

Having reached an agreement with Archway Steel to purchase the remaining land for the new stadium, Tottenham can now press ahead with the project and work towards securing financing and naming rights.

Spurs are planning for the fact they will have to move out of White Hart Lane and ground share for the 2017-18 season ahead of the new stadium opening in August 2018.

Wembley, the Olympic Stadium, Upton Park and Stadium MK were all under consideration as temporary homes, but THST were told that list has currently been cut down to just Wembley and Stadium MK.

Merson isn't right. He would be if the call up were to be based upon Townsend's performances in a Spurs shirt. But Townsend does well pretty much every time he plays for England.

Also Merson is a terribly bad pundit who deserves no credit for anything. His prediction record is no better than the avarage fan could do.

A move to Serie A could potentially be fantastic for Townsend. The guy has got a fantastic physical and technical talent, and in Italy he would have more space to take advantage of these sides of his game.

Italian football also has a reputation for being more tactical, which is something he could hopefully learn from.

I've thought for a long time, and still do, that Townsy needs to move to a club where he can play comfortably week in and week out, taking advantage of his strong points and more easily camouflaging his weaknesses. I think Serie A might be perfect, and that a move there would be a win-win-win, for Spurs, Townsend and England.

Merson is a dimwit

Still, AT is a winger, not an inside forward. He has a lot of experience to gain and a LOT of shooting practice to go before reaching that level

The guy is an impact sub just like he is for England, mind you Poch turns to bench and best other option is Lamela, good lord....

:pochfacepalm:

God this geezer is frustrating. Always seems to make the wrong choice. Watching him in theses friendlies, against supposedly weaker opposition, he still lost the ball too easy and failed to pick out the pass.
Lela unmarked back door, cuts back instead of chipping shoots over the bar from 20 odd yards.
Just has to cut the ball back to Eriksen for a tap in, fluffs it with a half chip keeper/pass into the keepers hands.
However, was involved in a decent move with Winks, Carrol and Kane.
All he seems to be able to do is run fast really. His skill is negligible too. Too many times he got robbed of the ball doing tat same half arsed turn.
I honestly think it's his last season, if he don't step up.
Why can't an EPL player look up? The players that never made it when I was younger where the ones who run with their heads down, unaware of others positions.
If only he could look up and cut the ball back/cross to a player in a better position. It wouldn't matter that in his his self absorbed state he scored every time. He don't though.

Love Andros. Can't fault effort/commitment but he has to sort out the end product. Really want to see him come good. But if after so many years he can't see an unmarked player in a goalscoring position and find him, I don't think he's going to.
So, hopefully he improves his goalscoring.

Lamela can create a goal. Lamela would be able to spot someone unmarked in front of goal and pass it to him. Let Lamela take the pens and he'll have scored as much as Andros.
The only reason AT makes an impact is everyone is fucked when he comes on, and he is quite fast.
Start him and he will fade out of the game, get disposed and provide nothing.
All this Lamlea bashing is terrible. AT has had more of a chance and, imo, has half the ability of Lamlea and not done much.
If only Lamlea good run fast eh?

He doesn't get muscled off the ball, and has a shot on him... He's got a fucking massive head.
What, are you talking about the same Andros? He gets disposed a lot mate. He does have a shot on him, but it usually goes thirty foot over or wide.
3 league goals in 47 appearances, one a mis hit cross the other a penalty. Yes he has a great shot on him. I assist in 47.
He needs to improve drastically imo. Especially in his finishing, passing and decision making.

This is quite a decent article, not about Townsend's ability on the pitch but rather his mental strength.

From a personal perspective (what other would there be?), he is someone who frustrates me. There is ability there, clearly but so often he is guilty of the same thing over and again.

Perhaps Townsend's greatest problem is that he isn't played as an out and out winger. He is no way good enough to play as right sided, left footed player. Perhaps, as when AVB had Bale and Lennon switching wings he could but not for a full 90 minutes.

I think he should be sold. He'll fetch a tidy sum, and I am confident he isn't someone we'll rue selling in two or three seasons time. Which doesn't please me to say.

If we played him as a left winger then id keep him. If not then hes an impact sub... So if the right offer came in id take it.... Which is what i said before in this thread i think, lol

I'm all for fair criticism but it really wasn't a mishit cross. It was a fantastic cross that was either dummied by Holtby or just missed.
