There's no point having fast wingers if you don't get the ball to them quickly - see how that worked for the winner last night.

All too often we are slow transitioning the ball giving the opposition time to load up the defence

And when we do get them the ball, they don't actually attack the FB as much as they could. The timing of overlap and underlap runs by the 8's and FBs is off atm too.

thinking back to when i was watching the first 20 minutes of the game last night, did anyone else just have that overwhelming sense of familiarity?

if it's not Champions League we always seem so half arsed in cup completions, our spells in the europa, and conference league were abysmal under poch, jose and conte. the domestic cup performances were bad under conte and have been so far under ange.

I honestly just feel there's no pressure to do anything from the top, your job is only on the line if you don't achieve 4th. everything else is a distraction to that goal, i expect a decent performance at the weekend but a shocking one against carrier bag

I've already said this many times. You don't play a single pivot against any decent attacking team: particularly when said team is missing their 2 main central midfield 'runners' and have replaced them with 2 midfielders who can barely jog let alone run AND you're missing you're main defensive midfielder.

-------------Bentancur-----Sarr----------------------
-----------------Maddison/Kulu----------------------

but Woolwich had no intention of attacking anything. they played a ultra compact low block, gave up possession and obviously tried to win it on a counter which didn't work due to VDV and one of the full backs cleaning up which is their job in this system.
playing maddison and Kulu seemed the move as he correctly assumed we'd have tons of the ball and needed to have the creativity to break down the leagues best defence

There were definitely some moves I disagreed with last night but I’m still firmly “Ange In”. All the Ange supporters went on a boat ride this morning and I wanted to share it with the forum.

It’s not that I’m obsessed with Ange and would stick with him at all costs. But firing him is detrimental to success. Levy will get someone else that will almost certainly fail and we’ll waste another 1 or 2 years and be right back here. Arteta finished 8th in his first 2 seasons FFS. Ange is not a guaranteed failure - most other managers had about the same results as he did 5 games into the 2nd season.

We need stability. It’s too early to fire him. He’s a rebuilding manager and we have really young players. We at least have to give him a chance.

Barring a disaster (relegation battle), he should get at least most of the year before he’s reevaluated.

I’d rather watch a football club that wins than one that fired the manager every 12 months.

The football is as predictable as the sun rising and setting every day.
It's the total opposite of a box of chocolates. You know exactly what you're gonna get.
And that's why teams are getting the level of success they are against us. They know where we're going to struggle. They know where we could be dangerous. They know how to play against us because they know how we'll play.

As for the overall cup issues, you're probably not far wrong. Winning a league cup doesn't gather fans from overseas. It's does't attract glamorous sponsors. It doesn't grow the THFC brand. The only footballing thing in the 21st century that does that is glamour games against the big clubs of Europe.
So it's very likely coaches bonus, pay and objectives are heavily stacked towards top 4 finishes. Anything else is an additional bonus.
8 changes last night was as dumb as 9 last year and however many others the prior coaches made.

If we play the same football on Saturday and lose, he could be gone as early as next week.
We just can't carry on doing the same thing game after game and expect it to get better.

It was a dreadful performance but crazy that the 5th match of the season in the least important competition would make such a difference.

every time the other clubs win ugly, it’s something about a champion blah blah.
Normally I'd agree. But we spent many games under Jose and Conte winning ugly, were still derided and there's only so many times you can defend that style of play. It's not sustainable.

Scraping through the cup whilst playing terribly would be admirable if:

a) it wasn't against a championship side that has not only won just the once this season but also rotated heavily themselves, and

b) on the back of 30+ mostly turgid performances and poor results.

Yesterday was a continuation of the terrible form, not an exception.

Ultimately, Levy is the root cause of everything wrong, but he's not changing. The players are at fault to a degree, but it's not their fault if they are not suited to a system or not good enough. Which is why the manager has to affect the change.

I WANT Ange to succed. Because it means we succeed. I just don't believe it's going to happen. I, like many others, are fed up. Not because of five games. Not because of 30 games. Not because of Ange, specifically. But because of 30+ years of mediocrity, with the odd bit of silver thrown in and a few "oh so close" moments that we never capitalised on. We have to break this cycle that began with Poch's dismissal, and we have to give someone time to eradicate the perpetual failure and disdain we feel. But that also has to come from the man in the seat realising that it's not working and fixing what he can.

He wasn't backed adequately this summer. On the counter he's mostly playing the same players as last year, when we scored 74 league goals. We don't look anywhere close to matching that based on current performances. We ARE tighter at the back, we are seeing more of the ball. These are improvements and of course we will lose football matches.

All that's happening for me is that I'll end up evaluating whether this thing - which is supposed to be an escape and fun, entertaining - is ultimately beneficial to my mental health. I'm sure some will be "great, fuck off them" but I won't be alone. We already have a stadium which is full of tourists now, as the club cares little who fills the seats. I was a ST holder before I passed it up, I'm back on the list but I'm 78,000. 78,000 ahead of me wanting a ticket. It's just a licence to print money, and be just "good enough". I'm not sure if "good enough" is what I was hoping for. Not when the game is about glory.

Stop arguing folks - it's happening whether his fanbois like it or not.

No need to keep showing facts, figures and stats the prove we're in decline anymore.
The lock is ticking and time is running out.

All that is fair. Why does that mean firing ange is the answer? Did you enjoy the Mourinho and conte years? They were the only years I gave up and stopped watching. The play was boring and the managers were arrogant. Ange’s play is anything but boring (outside of 1st half yesterday). I fear sacking ange will lead to a repeat of the Mourinho/conte years with the difference being the new manager wouldn’t be such an asshole.

We are all fed up with 30+ years of losing but Ange had nothing to do with that. He’s trying to fix it and it won’t happen overnight. It’s just 5 matches into the 2nd season. I feel like giving ange the season (barring disaster) would at least provide some stability that you did acknowledge we need.
