I mean the thing that needs to be accepted as fact now is that winning the Europa League *is* in fact thrilling, as is winning a domestic cup. The "only PL and CL count" people are just incorrect and always have been.

The specific moment of that Dortmund game when we were hanging on by our fingernails as Little Cinderella Leicester City's only challenger, with the promise of them collapsing always in the air, was a uniquely difficult one, I offer Poch and Levy some grace there.

But the GENERAL PRINCIPLE is that Levy has never, ever provided the resources to make winning the PL or CL a reasonable aim, and so he and his managers' remit to throw their entire limited pool toward those competitions and forget about other trophies we had much more legitimate ambitions of winning was a big mistake and a recipe for exactly the kind of drought we experienced.

I would love for this to be a moment to change the club's way of doing business and make an absolute commitment to being the best team in Europe. But we all know that's not happening, we all know the Levy Handbrake remains firmly on. Under those circumstances the "lesser cups" mean a hell of a lot, as they always have in the club's decorated and glorious history!
It's misleading to say Levy has never provided the resources. Levy doesn't have the resources. Lewis has the resources. Lewis has never provided the resources.

Not a single team we’ve played would be top half in the prem. The one we played in the final are literally 16th and were somehow unbeaten in the same competition.

It’s a big trophy due to the reward (CL) and because it’s a European cup. Its prestige is very high in relation to the actual competitive challenge.

If the FA cup gave you CL it would immediately become a better trophy - you play much better teams.

None of which should alter the enjoyment of winning it, but in that context I’m not gonna bum lick Ange or indulge in him massaging his own back for doing it either. Thanks for getting over the line and breaking our duck but we all have eyes and can see the quality of the teams we played.
TBF, the FA Cup is only 6 matches for a PL team and often only 1-2 difficult matches for the eventual winner.

Palace beat City, Villa, and Fulham. Their other matches were Millwall, Doncaster, and Stockport.

Not to take anything away from them, wonderful accomplishment and I would love for us to win the FA Cup again.

FA Cup 100% should convey a champions league spot. All domestic cups should (not the League Cup, a 2nd domestic cup is stupid). The champions league should once again be about rewarding winning something.

Anyway. We won a trophy, anyone that's not happy about it really ought to log off the forum and move on with their life. Anyone not still buzzing probably hates ENIC more than they love Spurs at this point.

City, Fulham and Villa is a much harder run than Frankfurt, Bodo and United. Villa are a CL calibre QF team who beat PSG, Bayern etc this very season and City are miles ahead of Manchester United. Fulham away is a very tough fixture.

I don’t think there’s anyone not happy. Or at least very few. Most people in this thread are just contextualising the trophy win because this is the Ange thread and we’re discussing his future as a coach. It doesn’t take away from the trophy win, us winning anything would’ve been a huge day.

The whole point, for me, is us being those teams shouldn’t save Ange’s job. It should allow him to walk away with dignity but we have still ultimately massively failed against our peers.

I feel like some people expect every post right now to be ‘we won the cup go Ange COYS’ which is fair enough but all a bit pointless. I don’t feel the need to be performative about enjoying a win.

Yep. Ange actually knows how to win.

Yeah see? Posts like this are embarrassing. I’m sure if Pochettino sacrificed league seasons for the weakest possible cup he would have known how to win too.

Unfortunately for him, he was a good manager, we got top 4 easily most seasons and therefore our finalist opponents were 98 point Liverpool instead of 16th place Man United, and to get there he had to beat 100 point City and an incredible Ajax team instead of Norwegians.

Pochettino won a league and cup with PSG as well. So I guess he knows how to win as long as the opponents are weaker .. go figure.

As if Ange could ever have coached us past some of the best sides in Europe. Give me a fucking break.

I've been saying for months that Ange has to go, regardless of the trophy. If the trophy had been the CL, I'd say the same.

Winning a cup simply can't outweigh the worst season in 50 years. And, really, you might have to go back 90 years to 34-35 when we were relegated. That's the last time we lost the majority of our matches.

And the worst 18 month period of sustained league failure in - I don't know, I haven't analyzed that - maybe ever. I feel like the few remaining Ange supporters lack a real understanding of how historically bad we have been since November 2023.

Like not just a bad patch of form and some unlucky injuries. I really do not believe Tottenham has ever endured a worse 18 month period, EL trophy aside.

Yeah I don’t think people realise how much cups are down to factors outside of even a very good managers control. Di Matteo is the best example - two cups in a season including the biggest trophy in Europe. Was he elite? Was he fuck. Shit loads of luck and right place right time.

Ten Haag won a trophy in both his seasons. Born winner? Maybe. According to some logic on here he would be.

Ange focused the hell out of Europa, the team was clearly ultra committed and let’s all be honest and admit we had a very kind run and a pretty incredible team to be facing in a final. It all came together for us. Awesome, it’s about fucking time.. to win the CL we would have to have beaten two sides who got 198 points combined. We needed some fucking luck.

By fought strongly, I mean full-strength teams. In the past we've seen managers throw competitions away (domestic cups) in favour of other competitions, but Ange has made a serious effort in all of them.

Atalanta won it last year...also finished 4th in Serie A and made the final of the Coppa Italia. The team they beat, Bayer Leverkusen, won the Bundesliga undefeated and German Cup. Villarreal finished 7th in La Liga the year they won it, Sevilla 4th the year before that, Chelsea 3rd in the PL in 2019, Atletico second in 2018...
We did get to a domestic cup semi final.

It isn't really a well-kept secret that Serie A is played at a relatively slow pace and isn't particularly competitive. Both of those things factor heavily. The PL is renown for being, basically, 38 games of intense fitness with no such thing as 'upsets' or 'surprise' results, such is the competition across at least 17 of the teams.

Maybe, just maybe cause their managers & players didn't openly sacrifice the league to win the EL (and save their rep).
I think the idea that the league was 'sacrificed' would be a poor excuse for just plain old crap league form and tactics. There's no evidence to support any intent. Only factor, really, has been injuries. Outside of that it's just naivety from Ange, and being consistent enough in game plan to be figured out on a weekly basis.

Ask Timo. Or refs/VAR.
Timo hasn't been thrown under the bus - he's been sleeping under it all season. Really like the guy - he comes across so nice - and wanted to keep him this season, but he's looked worse than Njie and Nkoudou ever did (which is a low).
I think you're conflating "blame" here for observation and tough love. He is supposed to be one of our highest paid and best players and has looked like an academy reject.

Bissouma said the exact same thing recently, in that he never blames the players for the defeats. Its night and day compared to Conte/Mourinho/Poch.

Rodgers bottled the Scotts Cup Final today.

Alfie Dorrington’s Aberdeen the winners

Easy to win the treble in Scotland though. Rodgers is a much better tactician than Ange

Rodgers won the treble in back to back seasons, this would have been the third time he'd achieved it in his career which makes it sound not so fucking hard after all doesn't it?

Maybe research things before you post. Might make you look less silly.
