What’s your obsession with poch?

He is the longest serving manager we have had in recent times and he struggled at first but was given time.

I want a manager to stay with us for a long period of time, I feel like that is how we will see success and I think the first two years of Pochs tenure here is a good indicator of how we should be thinking about Anges too.

I wasn't a fan of the Poch appointment and didn't take to him at first.
There's not much in it between the 2 of them. 2 points. Looking specifically at the 2nd half of the season, Ange won 9, Poch won 10. Both seem to have taken most of those wins in the first half of the 2nd half of the season before finishing pretty badly.

Interestingly, 15/16 was poor in the first half. 0 wins from the first 4 having lost the opener. But then we only lost 5 more all season. Turn a few draws into wins and we could have been far higher than 3rd in a 2 horse race.

The only obvious differentiator in those first seasons for me, is that the Poch 14/15 team never lost more than 2 in a row. Last season we lost 3, we lost 4 and we were seconds away from 5 on the bounce.
That's my biggest concern - how the team seem to react to losing is pretty bad.

Unlike Poch, Ange is a proven winner, just ask Archie Gray!

Another question for you.

Do you see this season being a transitional one?

I won't use the term transitional - there should be expectations based on the reality of the situation.

I want to see more consistency over the entire season, fewer goals conceded a more fluent attack against lower-block teams.

This should be expected after a season of him being here and working with the squad for a year.

As we saw with Newcastle last year though, adding in Europe can have an impact and I'm willing to accept that it might as he navigates how to use the squad appropriately.

That's not to say I will accept poor performances and stings of bad results. I just want the right amount of time to be given to him and the team before people start to jump on them and call for his head - Frankly, I don't care if it takes another season for things to click - I just think our best chance of having them click is sticking with the manager who the team we have employed to find the players that suit him bring in.

Well, Ange went on a crazy run at the start of the season and went 10 games unbeaten - Poch managed 6 games unbeaten in his first season.

That being said, i will obviously concede that Poch did have a European campaign to contend with in his first season too - something Ange had the luxury of not needing to worry about.

That also being said - Ange also had a better quality of teams challenging for the top 4 last - likes of Villa and Newcastle stepping up in a big way. In 2014/15 That was not the case - we finished 5th - Liverpool 6th (big six all in the top 6 positions) with Southampton 7th and Swansea 8th.

Ultimately, I just want some consistency in every area possible -

I genuinely believe we are building an exciting team and, from the looks of it, we are doing it with Ange in mind.

If we have a shite start to the season, it will be rough and absolutely does it ultimately fall on Ange to ensure that the team is mentally prepared for every single game regardless of what happens the game before. Let's see if he can improve on everything needed.

We will need to be a lot better this season. It's likely Newcastle, Chelsea and United will improve IMO. Maybe not United.

Chelsea got way better in the 2nd half of last season. Could have been Poch, could have been the 3,000 new players finally clicking.
Newcastle had far worse luck with players being out than we did.

Im just saying nothing is a given

Liverpool new manager, Chelsea new manager, who knows what could go on at Newcastle..... Villa in a harder European comp....

We just need to concentrate on us.

Last season has probably been the most accessible to get top 4 compared to the last few years. I dare to say only Woolwich improved compared to the last couple of seasons, City lost Gundogan in the summer, Haaland was out for a big chunk of the season and didn’t produce the same insane season as the one before it, Liverpool bought some players who weren’t as good as they thought they’d be (and their manager announced he’s leaving before the end of the season), Chelsea who were midtable for like 80% of the season, Man Utd were terrible aswell, Newcastle hit by loads and loads of injuries and Aston Villa who have been pretty consistent since Emery took over, but it’s not like they were some unbeatable side (we even smashed them 4-0 at their stadium).

It remains to be seen if next season it’ll be worse, probably yes because Liverpool and Chelsea have worse managers than last season imo, Aston Villa will have to deal with UCL, Man Utd is unknown… Newcastle will likely be a contender for top 4 but that’s about it.

There are a lot of people on here who will insist that Ange’s second season is the “big one”. The one where he wins the league.

There are also a lot of people who were claiming after 10 games and 20 games last season that we were in a title race.

Ange himself has said this season he wants to be challenging for the title.

So not sure when you think we can judge the team? Quarter into the season - as per my statement, halfway, three quarters or only at the end?

I had a discussion with someone on here that we permanently seem to be in transition.
After two pre seasons, one full season of football and 3 transfer windows I’m not sure if Ange has now moved out of transitional territory into a space of expectation in the average fans opinion.

Going by his own mindset I’d expect him to be looking at the team after 10 games and asking questions of himself / the team if indeed he does expect to be challenging for the title after 38 games.

Newcastle, Villa, United and Woolwich.
Good teams to compare yourself to don’t you think???

Way too early to say what the challenge is just yet, probably best to see how we look when the window is shut.

I’m in two minds with Ange.

There’s obviously the perfectly reasonable opinion that we are bringing in young players, building for the future and, as fans, we should take the same approach and expect nothing more than iterative improvement. Fine. Makes sense.

But then I can’t shake his behaviour at the end of the season, how he called out the fans with the City game and expressed confusion at the idea we wouldn’t want to win a game, even if it meant the Scum lifting the title. He had this combative arrogance that really fucking grated. And, as fans, if we return the compliment, why shouldn’t we expect success?

In short, I’m actually fine with just seeing a team developing. But he really needs to work on how he talks about himself. It sometimes feels like he thinks he’s doing us a favour.
