Management Ange Postecoglou

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

A lot depends on what happens as the current core group gains experience and their salaries increase. Is this a plan to win it all, or a plan to control costs while playing entertaining football? There is a transfer spend component and a salary spend component. Over time we should see both rise.

I can't figure out why Postecoglou doesn't want a dedicated set piece coach. Perhaps he believes it will take training time from things he prioritizes. An alternate theory is he is just that stubborn and set in his ways that he'd rather give up goals than entertain the idea he's wrong.
What does a set piece coach do really though than other coaches can’t take on? It’s not like our set pieces have been great pre Ange. A defensive coach will know how to defend corners or free kicks? The idea that a designated coach will make us solid as a rock is a little naive.

defenders should know how to defend by themselves should they no?

Thanks my point. You ether have man mark or zonal, and always have a man on the back post. As for corners/freekicks it’s at least 50% on the delivery of the ball. I’d say the majority of the work done by freekick specialists are done in the video room.

Everyone is getting their nick knacks in a twist about set pieces and our inability to defend them feck me Romero, Van de Ven or Dragusin should have enough gumption and experience to rectified the situation on their own…..as is the guy who’s job it is to score goals it’s not down to the manager 100% if he cant convert chances or has limited chances the manager is at fault if he keeps picking him……

Same thing with attacking set pieces, Ward-Prouce or even as far back as Beckham. Just work on your delivery and the rest will fall into place. I remember a story about Bekham staying back day after day practicing free kicks and delivery for hours after training was over, Ronaldo too and we all know it paid off. No coach is gonna telll you how to strike a ball that is your own way. It’s hours and hours of striking the ball at no one.

By the way, set piece coaches don't work on defensive set pieces.

They specifically work on attacking set pieces.

Nick Montgomery is tasked with coaching defending corners this season. Bare in mind, Hibs had second least amount of goals conceded by set pieces last season in SPL and there was an article on him and how he sets up set pieces somewhere (I'll try find it).

There's also the fact that Ange's Celtic went from conceding 4th most from set pieces in his first season to the least in his second.

I said it before but I'd be shocked if we're not much better from set pieces this season.

I'm not sure those hours of practicing free kicks, quite worked out for Ronaldo in the way you think they did.

We've still got absolutely no idea how to break down teams who sit back.

"Attacking moves" (if you can even call them that considering they consist mainly of passing the ball aimlessly around the outside of the box) end up being turned over through errors. There's absolutely zero cohesion shown by us in the final third, we look like we have absolutely no idea how to score against teams who park the bus.

Defensively, we're still as desperate and clueless as we were last season. Scrambling back to defend inevitable counter attacks. The same applies to set pieces, which we're made to look like total twats in.

If you play one way and one way only, as he so often states, you need to make sure your players are able to execute it. Clearly, we're unable to do that. We haven't improved whatsoever since last season and it begs the question, what the fuck has Ange and the coaching team done to fix those problems because based off tonight, we're still as pathetically clueless as we were 6 months ago.

Absolutely fucking pathetic.

The amount of times I've said we need REAL PROPER QUALITY to play this style in the prem.

No Neto, no Eze.

No change from last season.

And there are still a lot of problems with how we play, in general.

The gaping holes we leave are criminal.

Our pressing is still disorganised and seemingly random.

I dunno Ange... I just dunno, mate.

He can talk about silverware until the cows come home but until he learns how to coach a team so they don't concede piss poor goals every week it's never going to happen.

A team with our back four should not be conceding the amount of goals we have under Ange, it shows a flaw in the system; something that should have been worked on and improved pre season but based on the evidence, it hasn't been at all.

If he doesn't adapt as a manager I cannot see him lasting the season and I absolutely hate the idea of another "rebuild" but he's really got to pull it together and fast imo.

Make no mistake, that is a very poor result today.

Cannot see him lasting until Christmas if I am. Honest. We are still too easy to defend against. All you have to do is choke the middle of the pitch. We are too slow in the build up. We were still doing 5-6 passes between our backline when they weren’t pressing.

The defending was the same the attacking was the same. We'll win some We'll lose some We'll draw some bit I suspect we'll probably end up the same as last season. We really should of been winning that game tonight.
