Management Ange Postecoglou

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I like Ange. Charismatic, affable, talks a good game. He's brought something different to the league.

I'm going to be bold here - he doesn't see out the season.

I don't see the systemic issues we all can see being fixed under him - one way of playing and his way is to just go in harder on that approach. And we know what happens when Levy gets upset with his managers...
💯 agree.

Before a ball was kicked I thought he might have gone before Christmas. Having seen how last night played out, I’m fairly convinced.

We’ll always have the first 10 games of 2023/24! Since then, it’s been fairly average mate. Too stubborn and does a lot of talking, which isn’t backed up.

Crackers on Last Word on Spurs summed it up for me: "He seems to have all the answers going forward, but nothing at the back. We look ... very, very vulnerable".

I see no change from last season or this pre-season. I hear people blame the attackers for being wasteful - which is true - but you don't get to win the PL with a fragile defence.

This isn't me melting after one game or chanting for his head; I want him and the lads to succeed. But as entertaining as his style can be, Ange continues to worry me and I can't get away from that fact.

I want to know why the team ALWAYS falls apart as soon as the opposition score. Every time after conceding we look a mess. Are we signing the right players with a win at all costs mentality and who are strong up top. I don’t think we are.

Turning point for me was Chelsea last season, the 4-1 loss. Very unlucky with injuries: went down to nine and had our entire defence camped on the halfway line. ‘It’s who we are mate’.

Suicide note!

Problem is where do you go from here.

Elite manager: Jose/Conte - can’t use them as don’t support them well enough.

High press manager: same issue as Jose/Conte need specialist players which take either years to develop or lots of money.

Defensive manager: Nuno - fans hate it, anti-Spurs.

Jol/Redknapp pragmatist: that brand of football doesn’t really work anymore at least in terms of being successful. I suppose Eddie Howe is the closest but he is already with Newcastle.

Your pretty much left begging Pochettino to quit the USA and come back.
A just question - I have no idea whatsoever.

I do think at root this is a Spurs/Levy/board thing, not an Ange thing.

Good coach, but I dont think he will ever be elite. When you look at the control Man City and even Woolwich play with, we are a long way from reaching that level quality OUT OF POSSESION. Very similar to Man United under Ten Hag, there are too many phases in the game where the match turns into a ping pong matches, and im not necessary talking about efforts on goal, but sniffing out attacks before the opposition can reach our final third. Man City and Woolwich are just so strong at denying teams entry into their final third. It seems really easy for teams to carry the ball into our third, or get in behind to attaxk our box.

Ange is a good manager, but I see so much of Harry Redknapp in him. He can get 4th, 3rd even, His range for me is 3rd-8th which is pretty diverse. He could win the FA Cup or League Cup. However as far as competing for the title - I don't ever foresee it no matter how many years he stays.

We looked vulnerable twice in 90.mins.

We are an attacking team that throws bodies forward and takes risks. Twice in 90mins is decent.

We need to score more goals. That’s the issue we have.

As for these “bold” predictions of Ange gone by Christmas, they aren’t bold, they are repetitive and boring. People have been saying it for ages and bringing up Chelsea or the first 10 games just as repetitively. It’s like listening to people who have been brainwashed and aren’t capable of living in the moment.

True. But the trouble is, what if the players just can’t do it?

If Guardiola was our manager it wouldn’t suddenly make our attackers be able to shoot more effectively. A manager can only work with what he’s got.

I am not making an excuse for him, there’s lots we can do better but not being able to finish properly isn’t his fault. It’s why I laugh at those people who say “we are better without Kane” or “Kane can’t play in this team”. It’s bollocks. Any manager would love him because he scores bags full of goals, is a reliable finisher and wins you games and they set up their team accordingly.
Just can't take a shot instead of the tippy happy shite in or around the penalty box?

I would have doubts about us winning any trophy with the way Ange has us playing ,challenging for the title just isn't the remotest possibility. If Ange was as good as we hoped we would surely be showing some signs of progress now .

Cannot see him lasting until Christmas if I am. Honest. We are still too easy to defend against. All you have to do is choke the middle of the pitch. We are too slow in the build up. We were still doing 5-6 passes between our backline when they weren’t pressing.
Mate we passed it all the way back to the keeper from a fucking corner when we desperately needed a goal.

Who the fuck does that??

Nope, I’m just grateful that we have an adult in charge who took responsibility for a shit result.

We had so called “winning” managers and neither of them ever had the emotional maturity to do that. Doesn’t change the result but it does bode well for the reaction from the team.
He can take responsability all day long, what does it change if our team doesn’t seem to learn from their mistakes? I thought you’d be seeing past these PR interviews by now, whether it is Postecoglou, Levy, the players or whatever.

If you had told me in June that we would start our first game with the same team but with the addition of a journeyman striker from Bournemouth then last night is exactly the kind of result I would have predicted.
And a few nutters are already claiming we've has a successful window!!!!!

I think last nights result and limp wristed performance is no more than these people deserve. A weak, loser mentality that permeates from the board, runs through team and infects large sections of the fanbase.

Personality armour. Ange seems like a nice guy, is funny and talks a good game - worlds away from the toxic Mourinho and Conte. Personally I want him very much to succeed. I think if he was more unlikeable he would have received more criticism last season.

We didn’t finish chances. That’s not about learning, that’s about rhythm and composure. In terms of breaking down deep blocks that first 60 mins was obviously much better than the end of last season. Different patterns and the goal was from a new pattern of play.

We had a meltdown when they scored and our captains need to stand up to be counted for that.

In terms of things to learn from last year. Set piece defending was solid and we gave up almost zero transition chances.

Overall far from perfect but if you are saying you can’t see anything learnt from last season after that game it’s because that’s that you want to see, not because you’ve watched the game with an open mind.

Anything that isn’t depressing sack the manager stuff is making excuses for you.

Ange taking responsibility for the players not finishing.

Imagine Conte or Jose doing that.

He can take responsibility all he wants it’s not going to magically improve when you have the same players trying to fix the same issue…

The responsibility was on people above ange to sort out the issue in the summer and they’ve given him just 1 first team player to do that, when it was clear we needed a lot more .
