Management Ange Postecoglou

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

It's remarkable the amount of 'I told you so' posts after one game of the season.
Who is saying "I told you so" in this thread?

What I am seeing is a lot of people pointing out our clear issues that Ange needs to fix (issues that were present last season which still remain.)

Then you have certain posters reacting to this information with emotionally impulsive outbursts; likely because they are upset the manager is being criticised and because they have been won over by his personality; they see that criticism as "unfair" when the truth is the criticism is mostly accurate.

Sure, you get some hyperbole but for the most part it's been pretty obvious the majority are annoyed because the things that needed fixing from last season are clearly still an issue now.

You may not like that but the evidence shows it to be true based on last night.

its the quality of chances they get tho aint it. they get far more cleaner, clear cuts. because a lot of the time its an attacker one on one with our keeper.

i want ange to succeed. but hes clearly got favourites now and his favourites are soft and they make us soft.
Well, yes. Because our opponents are not that stupid and prepare all week to play against us. We only train one way without tailoring to the opposition. Ange said this in the fallout from the Newcastle game last season.

Yeah, the thing is though you'd think we finished 15th reading some of the posts on here.

People are quick enough to say the club is finished when we finished 8th a couple of seasons ago yet we finish 5th last season and no one can take any positives from that? It was all just luck or its because we had a good start to the season etc.

We drew a game of football last night, we played really well especially in the first half. Unfortunately those chances we didn't take and yeah it cost us but the 'I told you so' posts are abit comical.

We have fans who were sick of counter attack, now they are bored of a manager trying to play a more progressive style of football. Maybe follow handball or volleyball instead.
If you'd have said we'd finish 5th without Kane, most of us would have taken that. More goals, less goals conceded and more points too.

It's the start that made everyone angry. We over achieved. And that raised fans' expectations.

Ange has had to start from zero but because of 22 years of Enic being shite, fans have no patience when he really needs it.

yep, rigid approach that is very easily nullified with counter attacking football. champagne ideas with lemonade money comes to mind with this bloke. wants to be city with son and johnson as wide players in the final third hahaha.

But completely ignoring the context of different circumstances and the fact that last night was nothing like last season. If anything that 60mins was much more like the famous first 10 games that people like to ram down everyone’s throats at every opportunity.
Last night was a copy paste of last season mate lol, how can you not see that?

Played some fantastic pretty on the eye football which amounted to a single goal and left us wide open to be picked off and that's exactly what happened.

The lack of positional discipline in this system is the Achilles heel of it and sure, it may work sometimes and have us looking fucking fantastic but across an entire season it's a net negative, as we witnessed last season.

The reason those 10 games happened the way they did is because teams hadn't figured the system out yet, once they sussed out how to play against us we started getting the sort of results we witnessed last night, Ange needs to adapt or he has no chance.

I don't disagree mate. I thought we were phenomenal the first 45 minutes.

And at times last season. When Angeball works it's magnificent. But you have to score.

And that’s 100% where the team needs to grow.

It’s no different to Conte ball when we couldn’t defend. Only much more exciting to watch.

Either way it doesn’t happen over night and you need to keep working your way through it until it clicks

Just wrong.

Leicester had been preparing to defend us for weeks and still couldn’t get near us for an hour. We didn’t punish them and we paid for it. That’s football.

Nothing more nothing less.

It doesn't happen overnight. But we aren't overnight now. There's been enough evidence to suggest he needs to be less naive.

The opposition have had an entire season to work out how to nullify us. Sure, that's easier said than done at times and our quality will shine though against the absolute weaker teams. But low block and counter is half the way there.

Our set up gives away chances, and not only good chances often ones that put them directly in on goal. It puts the players under huge pressure mentally.

In theory, we've upgraded our attack. solanke IS better than Richie. But Sonny isn't as effective on the left anymore. And you are relying on these players scoring more goals than the chances we are giving up.

This is the real reality of Angeball.

Leicester didn’t nullify us last night. We missed.

Scoring was one of our issues last season, we just pass it about until we lose possession, or it goes out for a corner that we never score from.

We weren’t passing it around til we lost possession for an hour last night. We were carving through them and getting to the byline regularly. We also got very very close to scoring from 2 corners. One cleared off the line, the other header from Romero just wide. Solanke had a good chance from another

After having slept on it, still so so frustrated after last night.

I genuinely still think Ange has the right idea, and is trying to play the football we all want to see. The issue is I really don’t think he has the personnel to pull it off to its full effect, and that isn’t on him. We played some excellent stuff for large parts of last nights game, but in the end the old failings came back to haunt us.

The wide players are absolutely key to the system he’s trying to play, and our wide players are just woefully average. If we had wide players who were any way competent in this system yesterday we would have ripped Leicester a new one in the first half.
Johnson is a mid table winger, Son was never a comfortable touchline winger, Kulusevski isn’t good enough to be a winger and less said about Werner the better.

Then you have midfield. We have nobody in midfield that can wrestle control of a game when the opposition begin to put us under pressure. Nobody. Bentancur is a nice footballer but he is not a 6/DM, far too unreliable in possession and nowhere near press resistant enough. Bissouma is not the answer either. I believe this is a huge reason as to why we seem to collapse if the opposition get a goal and begin to put us under pressure.
Our midfield just collapses.

These are issues that were blatantly obvious last season, last nights match could have been mistaken for so many games last season.
But what have the club done to address the above issues? We’ve got a kid from Leeds in midfield who looks a talent but is very raw, we have a winger from Burnley and Timo Werner on loan again.

Dom Solanke for 65 million from Bournemouth is not going to be the saviour some are painting him as. He’s fine and will probably do okay but honestly you could have put Richarlison up front last night and the difference quality wise would have been minimal.

Unless we get in a couple of really top additions over he next couple of weeks (spoiler, I can’t see it happening) it’s just going to be a carbon copy of last season I’m afraid.

Losing to the "good" teams in the run in killed our chances of the top 4 though, which was in our hands once we spanked TEN MAN Villa.

I can never tell if you are taking the piss or not. 🤣

Villa were well spanked when they had 11.

McGinn just lost his rag because he couldn’t handle Udogie dribbling through their entire team again. It was the type of capitulation that fans in here would lose their shit over.

Must have been naive tactics from Emery I guess? Or European coaches are never naive? I can’t tell

Most of our attacking play seemed to either fizzle out or resulted in goaless corners.

That's simply what happened. The header that was cleared off the line was obviously too tame.

The way you're going on is that you're pleased with yesterdays game against probably the worst team in the league.

We created 5 good goal scoring chances against a team with 11 behind the ball.

Actually more than that because we had 2 more in the second half and they were probably the best chances

The Villa game is the outlier in our run in. And yes, you could argue it was naive of Villa to try and attack us. They didn't attempt to defend against Angeball at all.

It was 2-0 when McGinn got sent off. We scored twice in injury time. That game was the very example of it all clicking and working in favourable circumstances. It helped that Werner had a good game. 🤣
