Well, we didn't.

Montgomery is just an assistant coach. But like every club in the world, probably gets designated set pieces. (like Jedinak and Mason last season). He isn't some sort of specialist like a Giani Vio.

But as we know, after Ange's first season of ingraining and building the foundations, he starts to fine tune the smaller details in the second season.

Ange's Celtic conceded the least amount from set pieces in his second season (fourth most in his first) and Nick Montgomerys Hibs conceded the least amount from set pieces last season too.

Was always going to happen. People thinking Ange wasn't going to work on set pieces when it was an issue are fucking morons. He just wasn't going to throw Jedinak under the bus in his press conference when people asked about it and hiring someone else.

Set pieces certainly look better and whilst Everton are in a mess right now, they are still one of the toughest tests we will face all season for set pieces.

We will concede a goal from a set piece this year and all the usuals will complain about Ange “refusing to address it” but it’s pretty clear that it has been addressed and based on what we’ve been seeing over the first 2 games we will end the season in the black for net goals scored/conceded from set pieces.

Let’s see how we defend in the next two

Our attacking ones weren’t great - we overhit around five corners to the back post with no-on le there

We scored goals from set pieces last season.

We only haven't conceded any this season because we've scrambled it away. Our defending from the ones we've given away has been incredibly chaotic. Ultimately you can determine it's "better" when the whole season has played out and we conceded fewer.

We've played two teams that are heavy favourites to go down. Let's not get carried away.

I don't know. There were some overhit corners but you can see new set plays and designs and they have created great chances vs Leicester and now a goal and great chances vs Everton.

It has been addressed. How it will shake out over a season is another topic but it has certainly been addressed.

Again, there is a post further up in this thread explaining that the starting positions of our most aggressive aerial players has been adjusted and now we are a mix of zonal and man marking. That's a result of the issue bei g addressed. We had to scrap against Everton but in 2 games against strong set-piece teams, we haven't given up a free header or shot. It has been addressed. How well it goes over a season is one thing but if we concede from a set piece and people say "Ange refuses to address set piece defending", it will be false.

Everton were statisticly the best set piece team last season so there's that.

We are obviously working on set pieces but I'm still yet to be convinced, we looked a bit hesitant a couple of times against Everton, one sequence it took us 5 attempts to clear the ball...obvious work in progress.

Ange just doesn't like letting the press dictate the narrative. It's pretty consistent:
"What are you going to do about your set piece problem?": "Not interested mate"
"What are your chances of making top 4?": "Not interested mate"

It's very similar to his reaction when his players [I'm looking at you James] get goaded into reacting to the shithousery of the opponents: he wants them to ignore that / rise above it.

And his commentary about Spence's redemption arc was kind of similar too - he was keen to point out that Djed hadn't allowed the attitude issues to be part of the conversation.

It's all about building the right mentality. You don't let yourself get sidetracked by issues that are not part of the big picture.
