Celtic was perfect for him in that regard. They are so dominant domestically that it didn't matter if he got completely exposed out in Europe. He could always point to the domestic silverware that came in like clockwork.

Had he stayed there it probably would have taken 2-3 more years before the fans truly got disgruntled about lack of progress in Europe.

Then back strolls Rodgers and has them make the knock outs on the second go around.
Yep, and probably better than Bayern playing in a very controlled way. I was very impressed, every player knew exactly what to do. They had three different tactical systems; one for defence, one in transition and one when they have the ball.

He won't get a job in England after he is sacked. I can't see any Championship team taking him on; it is too risky.

His system requires a poor quality of opposition. I wish the Ange simps would realise his system really isn't anything special. Take Celtic, their revenue and budget are more than the the rest of the league combined. If they don't win by a massive margin, it is a failure. Getting more players in midfield (to the detriment of the defence) makes sense in such an environment. There is little risk the opposition will punish you and if they do you should have scored a few. It isn't complicated stuff; if anything, it is a bit too simplistic.

I don't know if people will remember but Celtic came up against Real Madrid at Home under Ange. Their fans were crowing about being the better team for 30 minutes. They lost 5-1 in the end. That says it all to me.
its more Philosophy than method
Ange is a Philosopher - not coach
...that's why the same players make the same repeated mistakes for 2 seasons/

agree that SPL is a poor place to pick managers but rodgers had proved himself with Swansea and initally did very well at LFC. Bit unfair to say he took LCFC down, they had all their best players sold and not replaced. Didnt he win the FA cup with them?

I think properly managed and supported he can be a really good coach. If thats what he was with us I'd be very OK with that
Agreed.

Rodgers is not my favourite manager but he is better than people give him credit for based on how the Leicester spell ended.

In the PL he is clearly a solid middle of the table/cup winner if backed right.

bloody hell just seen MoTD 2

it was even worse than I thought. 2 horrendous defensive howlers in the first 2-3 mins. One after 20 seconds. Both were free shots from 10 yds and at least one shouldve been taken. That goal of the season that was chalked off - very lucky. Yes it was offside but they gained no advatnge from the guys position and hed actaully walked back into an onside position by the time he played the ball.

That goal from Sarr was a massive fluke from a cross that went nowhere near he planned. Nailed on pen but what a brain fart from the keeper. Lovely shot from Bergvall about our best moment but by that stage we were 2-0 down by then and it couldve ben by more. Sarrs goal was immediately followed by another break where they hit the post and the rebound couldve gone to an unmarked striker 10 yds out with an empty goal to aim at.

We mustbe the luckiest team in the PL right now. Couldve been 3-0 down to AFCB no complaints; couldve been 3-0 at ITFC in the first 10 mins. Villa battered us but only 2-1 with our goal in the last mins. AZ shouldve scored way more than the one. Jammy win at Brentiofrd.

So far it's only LFC who have embarrassed us via scoreline but several have on chances and balance of play

awful awful awful

Still got to play them away from home. Might be on the day they lift the trophy. They could easily celebrate by battering up by 6 or 7 if Ange is still here.

Notice how no player is now coming out in support of Ange anymore?

:nunothumb:
Uh oh... This is a slippery road he's taking now...
Frustratingly for Ange to fully justify his point, I believe we were still singing the 'Trumpet-led' "Oh When the Spurs..." when Romero had his brain fart after 12 seconds...

Granted, the 44 minutes of stone cold silence that followed in the 1st half didn't help anyone, but he can't pin the sloppy start on the Fans!!

Which is how it should be. I dream of when we have that again.

The modern game is about balance. And that requires adaptability.

Yea, well draw with Bournemouth this season wouldn't be a shocking result on its own.

But let's be perfectly clear and honest - our performance was pathetic and we really got very lucky in this one.

It was a home game... and we created xG of 1,53.
Out of which the penalty was counted as 0,788. So with reminder of a game we created whopping 0,74 goals (!!) at home (!!) while being down most of the game (!). That is total shit, no other word for that.
On the other hand, Bournemouth had xG of 2,2. And this leaves out a offside goal (counted as 0) that was just about sloppy timing by them...

We do not have logical movements in attacking side and we are absolutely and absurdly exposed on the defensive side.
Literally we've got NOTHING going for us at the moment.

I’m not sure we created a single chance for Solanke all game. Did he even have a shot?

I thought some of the systems front foot mentality had/has merit with the right circumstance. I also thought he would be adaptive to the situation as he progressed. People learn things placed in a new environment.

It seems not one thing was learnt from last season to this one. If the system was so good and change proof, we would be on the reigning PL Champions forum.

Amge's biggest problem getting another good gig is being thought a one trick pony. The rising knockout artist who gets chin checked. Suddenly every man and his dog sees the left hand he always drops. The unstoppable titan no more.

I think Ange is like a Primary school kid who gets the first few maths questions right in the first term of Year 1.... and suddenly thinks he's ready for Oxford University!

He’d be doing better.
Fair play, I called your bluff and you stood your ground.

Season 3 Nbc GIF by The Office

I'd honestly be happy with a team that had a more sustainable defensive structure, could hold onto the ball, and didn't leave such absurd amounts of space all over the pitch. The players can't be feeling very confident having to play this rubbish football every week and coughing up possession trying to progress the ball.

IMO there's some fairly obvious tactical tweaks that would shore us up and lead to more shot-creating actions, and which I have absolutely no faith in Ange employing:
  • Have our fullbacks provide the touchline width and bring our "wingers" narrower as wide forwards, which would better suit our squad. BJ, Maddison and Sonny (Moore, Tel) would make runs into the box and support Big Dom.
  • Have a defensive midfielder (e.g. Gray) drop back into a three when necessary as we're advancing the ball.
  • Play Maddison further up the pitch and have Bergvall + Bentancur/Sarr as our roaming 8s behind the front 4.
We may not score as many goals, but we'd be a lot less erratic and actually CONTROL games a bit better.

Been saying this for months now.

Great post!

Not to take anything away from your post but it just seems so obvious we should make these tweaks and the different it would make would be astronomical.

He persists with our ‘wingers’ hugging the touchline all game, where they are utterly useless. Teams know we try to get in behind the flanks so they just cover this play all game long.

Some thoughts on Ange:

> influential in persuading players to sign. Unfortunately the issue there is that it has been a very mixed bag (for every Bergvall, there's a Dragusin). But still, thank you for Bergvall if you did make the difference there.

>talent id in general has been also very mixed - aside from the signings, failing to play Spence for so long looks very poor, despite the spin he puts on it. I give him credit for Solanke.

>he achieved buy-in and loyalty from senior players like Son, Romero and Kulusevski. Of course this is now under significant strain. But vs Bournemouth I could see the players still trying at least.

>the early football had an identity, and one that was in line with Spurs' heritage - attacking football, even if a bit too Ossie Ardiles-like for some. If a good version of Angeball is going to come back, it needs to start very soon. Unsure if its flaws are too deep tactically, or if he can adapt.

>started well with the media, but now feeling the pressure. I do like that he publicly defends the players, unlike some of his predecessors.

I realise any hint of balance/praise for Ange is met with howls of derision on here. It's probably too late for him anyway, too much damage done to recover from. But I think we may as well keep him until summer and reassess then at this point.

Ange can't adapt - he's out of his depth. I am not ecstatic about any available option right now but it's best for all concerned if he's moved on in the summer. One thing I can promise is that if he's in post at the start of 2025/26 my interest in this club will flatline, and I'm not alone in that.

I just hope we can get a decent option in during the summer because some of our young players have talent and I believe they will progress well under an adept coach.
