There’s a conversation to be had about the merits of finishing 4th versus, say, 8th and winning a cup.
But playing like absolute cunts for over a year and sitting in 16th is not alleviated by any trophy.
There’s a lot of this gaslighting going on, attempting to paint Ange as some sort of competitive catalyst.
He’s an over promoted chancer that has been completely found out at this level. If we win the EL it’s despite this bozo, not because of him.
This whole debate around League vs trophies, in the context of assessing Ange, somewhat relies on the notion that this current situation is a conscious decision.
It's not.
We have been gash all season long in the League, the 1-1 draw to kick things off at Leicester was shit, the 2-1 loss at Newcastle was shit. People were clinging on to pointless metrics that they somehow believed demonstrated that we "dominated" and would come good, but we were shit, and have gotten progressively worse.
That wasn't a conscious decision to save ourselves for the Europa Semis. The manager hasn't thrown the league in order to concentrate on the cups, he has had no say in the matter due to his ineptitude, and has been massively fortunate in receiving a ludicrously easy route to this stage of the Europa.
Sacrificing the league form to focus on the cups sees you drop a few places down the table, not freefall to relegation form.
We're just shit and have skanked our way to a promising position in a knockout competition. Nobody at the club should be patting themselves on the back for this. Bilbao will pick us off with ease should we make it to the Final, and I'd fully expect Utd to do us should we face them too.
As it happens, I reckon Bodo will save us the ignominy and boot us out without much fuss this round anyhow.
