Undoubtedly the team that finished 2nd to Chelsea was the best Spurs team I've seen but difference was Chelsea had depth and we didn't... but that starting eleven was better than any other team that season. Still won nothing and that will always be the stick to whack Poch with... I've nothing against Poch but I just wanted to make a point that he wasn't this all singing all dancing messiah that came from mid table club and won it all and that's why we should pick Iraola, Silva or Frank as our next manager. For every Poch who's had a modicum of success there is a Gerry Francis, Nuno, Hoddle that have been an absolute shit show. The odds on one if those three matching Poch's achievements are slim... and actually I don't want our next manager to match Poch cause that would mean winning fuck all. I want a proven winner in a proper league who can get us challenging for the title every season. That should be the bear minimum for a club with our resources... not twerking for managers who finish 8th - 14th every season.
Inzaghi. Zidane. Xabi Alonso.

If only we were a serious club.

The debate is about winning trophies/titles.

If it's all about winning then you're saying that 99% of Sports teams/players are failures, that's not how it works - for example the 3 promoted clubs that came up this season, their target wasn't to win the Premier League or a domestic comp, it was to survive.

Name me another league in the football world or in fact another sport where every team/competitor would be classed as failures for not winning the prize come the end of the season.
Of course.

As the saying goes, it’s the journey rather than the destination. Certainly in terms of being a supporter. The Poch years were so enjoyable because you saw the team develop and they generated the feeling that we might actually win something. Hope based on how we played, rather than hope based on a lucky draw. In short, the team was fucking brilliant.

I do think, in hindsight, we should have focussed on some of those FA Cup ties, but we were playing so well they earned the right to go for the biggest prize.

By the same standard, that’s why I feel so little with Ange and this team. They haven’t generated any of that sense of momentum. The football is fucking appalling. We find ourselves in a European semi final by a combination of luck and watered down competition.

It’s clearly silly to say the only point of football is winning, as if it’s a zero sum game and there is no joy to be taken elsewhere.

Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try and win though.

Yes, if they don't win, then they failed.

In every sport, every participant bar 1 failed. That's how it works.

Some failures feel better than others, i.e. getting a medal at the Olympics, especially if you were an underdog to start with.

But second place is the first loser, whether anyone likes it or not.
I'd disagree, success/failure depends on what your goal is at the beginning.

If Ipswich had avoided relegation this season, would they have failed because they didn't win the title?

For us, when we finished 2nd, was the expectation that we would win the League? I don't think anybody would have suggested so, there would have been a hope, but not expectation. So was mounting a title challenge a failure? You can say that expectations can change during the season, but we didn't lead the table during that challenge, so I'm not sure at what point the expectation could/would/should have been adjusted.

I've written "expectation" too much there...

Expectation
Expectation
Expectation
Expectation
Expectation
Expectation
Expectation
Expectation...

This is nonsense. We had a great 11 and decent to middling subs when Poch was here.

The fact that he got us so close to winning the league with piss poor squad investment is a significant achievement in itself - and IMO did more for the club long-term than the unlikely event of Ange winning the Europa will do, in spite of Bald Cunt's priorities.
Only reason we won nothing under Poch is cause he wasn't backed right by the bald tumor. It's as if some forgot he got no new signings for 18 months.

Prerty much the same can be said about Redknapp.

Not for me.

Winning is winning. All you get for coming 2nd is the feeling of what ifs and if onlys

There’s no escaping that Sport is about winning.
It’s all relative. How is winning a League Cup or the Conference the same level as being second in hardest league in the world or last four of the hardest club tournament in the world? If we want club to gain prestige and respect as a top club it’s PL and CL where you earn it

its a temporary insanity because the season up to now has been so bad and the hate for the manager is potent.

no one will remember or care about finishing 2nd under poch 10 years from now. however spurs fans and the club itself will remember and celebrate a Europa league Trophy win in Spain 40+ years from now
Exactly what I’ve been saying!

Finishing 16th is awful, dreadful. But if we win the Europa I won’t be thinking about a league finish in 10 years time.
