I know this won't be welcome at this time but I feel conte still hasn't fixed our issues when being pressed.

The pattern of being suffocated in the first hasn't gotten better in months.

He fixed it in 15 minutes yesterday.
What he hasn't fixed, is the players inability to adapt on their own.
It took a half time team talk, where we came out and completely changed the way we played out from defence to sort it, but it got sorted.

I think it's a bit more complex. We played more long balls so we were under less pressure, but Villa also ran out of steam cos very few teams can keep up such a level of intensity for a whole game (only Poch Spurs, Liverpool, and City IMO).

TBF to conte, the issue is more one of personnell than tactics. PEH, Emerson, Dier, in particular invited a lot of pressure through poor passing and inability to retain possession under pressure.

They were fucking up a fair few passes. To be fair to PEH, a lot of his ills were born from having balls jabbed badly at him and then struggling to control them.
Dier though stood out, twice he kicked the ball out of play under no pressure. That was the Dier that bugged the fuck out of me for years. One I thought Conte had calmed down and made more safe and reliable. That was on top of the failed passes into midfield.

Need to work on that.

I think even Conte was surprised by the physicality of Villa’s Gerrard style approach because we were definitely rattled in the first half and didn’t help ourselves giving possession away but he sorted it and only one side was going to win that after the second goal went in!

I still think that the ref should be demoted or suspended for his totally inept performance

I'd like there to be a club instigated review process after games like this. Where a club can request the PL investigate the performance of the referee and the offences cited. IE, these 3-5 tackles were all excessive, the first 3 didn't even get a yellow which prompted more to follow. The referee didn't take the requisite action to stop it and as a result, we've lost a player for the rest of the season.
I'd want the referee punished and it made public. This to put off other refs from being blatant bias twats.
Then I'd want the players who offended put on a yellow from the start of 3 consecutive games. Make them play the whole game knowing one of those tackles is a red card.

And what makes it worse is that we got more yellow cards!!!

That tackle by that dirty cunt Young could have put Kane out for the rest of the season

We definitely got overrun in that first half. Villa were very profligate and had a few top chances and a handful of half ones.

But it doesn't really worry or surprise me. Conte's not been around long enough to make us perfect yet and personnel wise there's still some square pegs in round holes. If teams really get tight to us and put pressure on there's some players we have who will struggle no matter the system.

They have an F1 style end of season, start of season referee briefing about what's allowed/not allowed. Their grievences are aired etc.... and then the season continues to be a circus as every other season before it.

I genuinely believe there's a collusion between clubs refs, and Sky to create the best "spectacle" possible, therefore some refereeing inconsistency is seen as desirable to generate outrage and drama. It also works perfectly as cover for favourable treatment to Man U, Liverpool, and to a much lesser extent, the other big 6 clubs. It's a bit like Jimmy Saville, prince Andrew, Eppstein etc., everyone knows, but no one talks about it.

The PL involves monsterous amounts of money and some very greedy corrupt people, no way they'll allow complete transparency and objecitivity, it robs them of their influence on things like relegation, top 4 etc.

I saw a glimpse of the Fabinho tackle yesterday that only got a yellow.
Wouldn't want to fuck up the title race by having a key player suspended for 3 games.
Not like when we had Dele and Dembele suspended for lesser offences.

Work in progress but there's been a big improvement. The players had a scrappy start the other day with some poor passing, but plenty of other times we've formed triangles and played our way out quite comfortably, much better than anything we saw under Mourinho or Nuno. Under those two we lose that Villa game. Under Conte we're harder, better, stronger, faster.

Give him some quality players this summer and we challenge for the PL title for real.

Not factoring in the fact that they kicked the crap out of us when analysing the first half against Villa is utter folly.

Definitely saw the attempt to execute the pattern you're talking about but it failed far more often than it succeeded. Seemed like everyone wanted more time on the ball and short of passing backward refused to pass quickly unless it was one of those quick transitions with Kane/Kulu/Son.

Let's not talk about Mou and Nuno, those two set us back so far in terms of fitness and basic techniques. Even tactically naive managers like Potter and Hassenhutl at least drill first touch and short passing.

It’s true. We started the game well I thought, then Gerrard’s karate tactics came out which rattled us and got into our heads. We desperately needed half time to reset and calm down

Indeed. It's hard to keep your composure when you're worried about some thug inuring you.... Which is very much the point of playing the way they did.

We got dominated dominated within 5 mins of scoring the goal.

Villa wasn't the first time we got overwhelmed by the opposition in the first half. It happened against Wolves, Palace, and Southampton too. Out of these lot only Southampton were dirty like Villa. Wolves and Palace legit kicked our teeth in for 45 mins.

It could have very easily been another Southampton/Wolves, and a lot of wailing on the forums. Actually, against Palace we survived the first half cos they missed sitter after sitter, but they were able to keep up the intensity in the second half too, and ended up scoring 3.

It quite clear that some posters are wishing that this wasn't true, but the issue is quite plain to see, and it goes beyond dirty tactics of the opposition.
