If we went out in january and bought a proper quality playmaker and even another winger/striker, we’d be in with a proper shout for the title and completely steal it from under man citys nose

When Liverpool won the league, which one was the "proper quality playmaker"?

Fabhino?

Henderson?

Wijnaldum?

Trent Alexander Arnold.

Liverpool essentially utilised him as playmaker from right back with Henderson doing the donkey work down the right to cover for him as he moved in to midfield. We do not have a Trent Alexander Arnold in the squad though, so...

I call Kane for us then. :nunothumb:

Their Kane was Firmino. Just far worse in front of goal, much more 'busy' and more creative but with much less passing range.

In 19/20 (the season Liverpool won the league) Trent scored 4 and assisted 13. From right back. That's creative midfielder level contributions, we have no fullback like this. In the same season Robertson scored 2 and assisted 12.

If you can magic up fullbacks that combined will contribute to 31 goals, then by all means don't worry about more intricate midfield players. Except you can't, because by your own admission they don't exist, which is why the club didn't sign a big RB in the summer.

For us, it's Kane I think. He just happens to score most of the goals as well.

Pretty good player, this lad.

Off topic, but I think England should play Trent on the right of the 3 in a 4231. Just let him be a creative force. Kane up top, Maddison at number 10 and Sterling on the left.

Anyway, carry on...

We're talking about 2 different teams, but my point here is:

- Football doesn't live and die by having a CAM or not.
- James Madison (eg) doesn't allow us to go toe-to-toe with City.

I'd agree in as much as we need elite FBs to complete this team and mount a title challenge; but I never expected a title challenge from this season anyway.

I don't necessarily think we need a 'CAM' but do think there's still a gap in this squad for more intricate footballers on the ball.

And I'm more talking going forward. This season top four is probably the aim, but the season after I'd expect Conte to want to start going through the gears. That means more players who can create chances.

Fair enough; but go back and read the post I was responding to.

Fuck Top 4 per say...... Better than last year ought to be the target. Tangible progress.

I think Conte needs that to engender increased belief in his methods too..... Look at the fanbase whenever there's a wobble.

He said we need a proper quality playmaker. He didn't specify it needed to be a #10 .. although I admit it's probably what he meant. But I'd agree tenuously that we still require another top class playmaker in this squad to compete for a league.

Comfortable top 4 would be progress, we scraped it on the final day last season. Also think competition will be a lot harder this year - Chelsea & Woolwich are rock solid and I expect Liverpool to have a resurgence soon enough.

I love Antonio and I love his passion. Did you see his reaction when the second goal went in, and the bear hug that he gave Harry when he came off?
I hope he's around for a few years yet, at least.

We "scraped" top 4 no more than City "scraped" the title...... (Less so if we're talking number of points.)

Chavs always come up smelling of roses (footballing cockroaches.... the cunts!), but Arse.... Rock solid? We have no idea if they'll wobble like always.... I wouldn't bet against it.

Dippers, Utd, Barcodes.... Let's see.

City did scrape the title. It's just scraping the title is more impressive than scraping top four.

I prefer not to speak as I will be called a gooner and hit with disagrees if I say anything remotely positive about them but fuck it ... they're going nowhere unless they have a major injury crisis. They're a proper side atm, as much as we might all wish otherwise.
