Manager Antonio Conte

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Your example was Bielsa. A nutter who suits smaller clubs or national teams. And even then it usually ends in tears very quickly.

What top tier managers have ran their contracts down entirely at clubs and then signed one? Has that ever happened?

You said "managers".... Now it's "top managers"....

I don't know.... Possibly.... Probably.....? It's not something I pay close attention to outside of what affects us.

It's his prerogative..... His way..... We knew that when he joined (See bulk of my prev. post). We either need to replace him in the summer or we don''t.

Hmm. I'm not sure I get the anxiety. Did Alli G not say the club have the option to extent for a year? The difficulty is whether we end up with a load of players of the wrong profile for our next coach.

In practical terms, there's little to be gained from extending it despite his wishes though..... If he's not happy; let him go..... We'll only make ourselves liable for compensation when the inevitable sacking occurs a few months later.

maybe conte believes that big clubs will look for him in the summer, but it will not happen.
juventus has judiciary troubles.
milan and intermilan have economic difficulties.
real madrid will never hire conte, and the same for barcelona, because of their game philosophy.
PSG is happy with galtier.
Bayern Munchen usually prefer german coaches.
atletico madrid is the only big club that could chose him at the end of the season, but they are not better than tottenham ATM

I’m sure he can go back to Italy for a bit and bide his time for the right role

I don't think Conte cares too much about waiting around for a bigger job. He's done it in the past.

When do any other managers feel a need to do this though? I’ve never known a manager to run his contract down entirely just to play chicken with the owners.

If he was loving life here I doubt he’d be doing this. And frankly the instability it causes isn’t great. How is the club meant to fully invest in him when he’s saying we’ll talk contracts when he has no time left on it?

Other managers don’t report to Mr. Levy.

Merry Christmas, Antonio. I know you're an avid reader of this thread.

Exactly that. His contract can be extended, unilaterally, by the board.

I'm having trouble getting my head round it.

If he wants to stay he would probably be offered a new contract.

If he wants to go, what's the point of extending by 12 months ? He would probably deliberately implode to get the sack.

Is it something to do with protecting an asset. ? Compensation if he goes to another club within the 12 month extension?

He might want to go but, as you suggest, if so, we could trigger the extension and then require 12 months compensation from his destination club. By the same token, it offers Conte a guarantee of more money, if things are going well.

I suspect however, if there is a complete breakdown, we’ll simply part ways.

Yeah, doubt he will be here in six weeks - if he is, it will be with a decent extension and 3 new players.

If not, Daniel Leachy will spend the next six months chasing Southgate

I do not think contracts matter to Conte. If he is unhappy he will just walk out anyway. The main difference will be that if under contract, he will not be able to work elsewhere unless Spurs agree a compensation package which is linked to the length of the contract. What a new longer contract would give him is better compensation if sacked but I do not think he’s cares about that. It is rumoured that the club has offered him 1M increase. When you earn as much as he does and believe that you will get future employment opportunities then that is not that important Either.
I believe him when he says he is happy but he really does not want to be asked about negotiations at every press conference. Let’s put the subject on the back burner as he wants and see how the transfer window and the remainder of the season plays out as I doubt it will be finalised for several months yet.

Him asking the media to politely fuck off is the right move. They've been selling Kane and even Poch for years. Not as if they are going to stop now. I think we are probably a generation away from how the media report on Spurs.

But at least he won't give them words to twist.

If he wants to stay then great. If he wants to leave then also great.

I would like Conte to sign a new contract, but if he doesn’t do so before the window opens I don’t see why we would invest heavily in the squad for “Conte style players” in the expectation he may or may not sign a new contract in the next 6 months. Better to keep the money and wait for new manager in the summer - probably the return of Poch.

but that said, I think we do need a new CB, RWB/RB and creative midfielder so if we get those great. They should be useable by the next manager.

Im getting a little bit frustrated with this need for wide men who can cross, which seems to be the Conte system. The best teams use that as an alternative to unpicking the defence through the middle. I wonder if Conte is a bit out of touch wanting a midfield of ball winning box-to-box midfielders with full reliance on wide men hitting the by lines for forward play. .

I'm not sure that is Conte's system either.
