Manager Antonio Conte

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I keep hearing that we’re not going to give him the players he needs/wants. He spent £172m last summer to improve a team that finished 4th. Where is the lack of support in that level of spending?

I’m not an ENIC fan but let’s be fair this season is not (entirely) their fault.

£170m isn’t much in modern football, West Ham spent more. Football inflation is crazy, to get Bastoni, Gardivol, Barella, Hakimi etc we are talking £300-400m so Chelsea money at least Chelsea money for one window.

£170m was a lot 5-10 years ago, it’s now just a top 6 teams yearly spend.

But do you spend 40m on a wingback for a manager who won't be here in 6 months time? If he won't extend his contract and we bring in a coach who wants to play with a back four you're stuck with 40m Porro who probably makes a poor rb.
Completely understand the question, but then ask yourself why is Conte hesitating to extend? What are the conversations behind the scenes?

Between Doc coming back from his knee injury and Emerson, Conte's system was only half working every single game. Perisic often being the only available wingback for selection.

The club have to know it's a problem and being that it's a window to fix this problem the hesitation over Porro makes me think Conte and Levy + board are not on the same page.

Yes and that is what a brilliant manager does. Poch was that for a period, he got players like Rose playing like the devil himself. He took the squad to its very highest level and then we didn’t add a few more extra bits of quality and it ended like Klopp’s current Liverpool team but unlike Klopp without the CL.

This club has no fucking idea how to properly back a manager, it never has done. We could have backed Poch properly, we didn’t. We hire cheque book managers like Jose and Ocnte but without the big cheque book, we are a fucking mess.

Poch was a brilliant coach. I'm not sure if he was a brilliant manager. But for that particular time, he was EXACTLY what we needed.

Your second paragraph is spot on though and what I've been saying for a while. We don't really know what we want to be. We can't bring in serial winners like Jose and Conte and not give them what they want. You either adopt the Chelsea approach of bringing in big names, spending big and perhaps winning a thing or two before moving them on for the next big manager, rinse repeat. Or you back a good coach, supplementing him with signings he needs to make his squad functional, gives us good football and perhaps we can get somewhere.

Without a plan we have nothing. Levy has always been a short term tactican on the pitch, and a tactican never wins shit without buckets of cash (see Chelsea), Woolwich I am afraid to say have a strategy, we don’t.

I was delighted when we signed Conte and thought he was the one to land us that long awaited trophy. The end of last season led us to believe that yes, this might be the season to get that monkey off our backs and he did well to drag us into top 4.
However, this season has been dreadful, TBH, in terms of performances and results, with just the odd game lifting our spirits.
My main issues with Conte are firstly, we only seem to be able to play one way and teams have figured us out. If he can't get the players he wants for his system, then we're screwed. Secondly, his substitutions are a puzzle to me. When we're losing, what's the point of making changes with a couple of minutes to go? I just don't get it.
Yes he must be feeling sad after the recent losses he's had to endure. But if he's not up to it, take a leave of absence and be with your loved ones.

A fair point.

Conte has to take his fair share of the blame.

He seems to have taken last season's successful playbook and set it on fire. The quick transition of the ball to our forward players is gone. As is the mid tempo press that forced our opponents out on the flanks or to take bad shots.

Last season it didn't matter if we had little possession, because we were set up well enough in defense and in the press that all we offered our opponent was hail Marys. This season we don't press in any organized way and thus we put our defense under unnecessary pressure and leak goals as a result.

We gave him 172m of players and he has done nothing with them.

Absolutely 100% agree. Spurs spent a whacking £172m last summer, (more than Woolwich by the way). If he chose the players he’s messed up, if he didn’t then he’s in the same situation as many others across the football world and he is expected as an elite coach to get a tune out of the staff. Cooper at Forest found himself in that situation and after a bedding-in period right now he’s proving to be a better coach then Conte.
Also unlike late era Pochettino, Mourinho, and Nuno he’s actually benefited from good recruitment. Bentancur, Kulusevski, Richarlison, Romero, and Perisic are our best additions in years. Even Bissouma and Lenglet are big improvements compared to our previous depth.

Are we light at RWB, CB, and in creativity. Absolutely! But he’s hamstringing himself in whatever is happened with Spence, supposedly we decided we didn’t need another CB after Lenglet, and he outright didn’t want Maddison or a creative player. So some of the recruitment issues fall on him and his style too.

My god, 50m of that were spent on Romero... and 60m more on Richarlison who was never a 60m player.

I think that’s exactly what’s going on.

But an ambitious team would sack Conte now, get their man in and start recruiting his players this window. Give him the next six months to bed in so we’re ready for next season.
Yeah, but then you have the likes of Kane, Perisic etc probably disgruntled by the decision. Tbh, I'm sick of watching the football now, we have lots of crap players but Conte is definitely underperforming this season. I know he lost a close friend, two really, but at 15m per season our performances in big games especially has been unacceptable. If he had requested a creative or passing midfielder last summer he probably would have got one. I dunno, trying to mute my emotions to it at the moment, I'd just like to see a course being chosen and stuck with. And for the football to be watchable.

Surely we just need to sign good footballers with good mentalities.

If Porro is the above then I'm sure he can adapt to playing in a back 4.

Cunt still calling Lloris one of the best goalkeepers in the world... CHANGE THE FUCKING RECORD!

Didn't he also say Dier could become world class?

:contefacepalm2:
This is what his fans need to realise if he stayed then Lloris, Dier and Son wont be going anywhere. He loves an experienced player and ones he thinks he can trust even when past their sell by date. He seemed pretty gutted about the Moura decision passing the buck 'as a club decision'
