Player Ashley Phillips

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

We were linked to that Esteve in January.

Might want to steer clear based on this data.

A few comments I picked up re Esteve, summarised as on

Great at being in right position every time and excellent at recovering but he’s not particularly a strong defender or a high end passer of the ball. But being strong physically and athletic can get you quite far, especially in a system that’s defend first

He'd be fine for some sides, but Spurs are definitely not a defensive side, and passing (a weakness of his) is essential at Spurs. Danso (and Phillips) over Esteve every time - I'd guess Esteve's main asset was availability, Burnley would have loved a big offer in January but fortunately Spurs found far better CB's available instead

Finally had a chance to watch through all these- really cool footage to see of him in action!

He's an absolute physical unit no doubt. His ball skills and passing leave something to be desired of course, but it's good to see him trying to break the press with long passes. He seems like he's decent enough at it now, that with his inevitable further development, you can imagine him being able to translate that to a higher level of play in the future.

I'm not sure based on this footage he's quite ready to be recalled to Spurs first team though- I'd consider sending him out on season long loan against next season again- maybe somewhere where he can play in an attacking side and work on his ball skills and passing more.

I can see him being a good pairing with Vuskovic in the future. Exciting to think about!

Not so flattering regarding Phillips...

Ashley Phillips enduring difficult run despite promising season for Stoke

As said, this season is another learning curve for the youngster who evidently has a ton of potential, a player who should thrive for Tottenham one day at the top level.

However, in review of his recent display against Watford in a 0-0 draw on Saturday, Phillips was said to be ‘panicking’ under pressure.

That’s according to the Stoke Sentinel who gave Phillips a 6/10 for his efforts.

They wrote: “Got lucky twice after panicking when he had to deal with long straight balls which can undo the other 89-odd minutes.”

And whilst Stoke were able to muster a draw against Watford, they fell to defeat in their previous two matches against Norwich City and then Middlesborough.

Against Norwich, Phillips was given a 5.5/10 rating, saying he failed to take charge for two of the goals Stoke conceded.

And then against Middesbrough, when all of Stoke’s players were rated very lowly, Phillips was handed a 3/10 and accused of ‘ball watching’ by the same outlet.

Thought I'd register as I browse here every now and again as the humour usually gives me a chuckle. That said as a Stoke fan (for my sins) whose been to every home game and most away this season.

He's had a couple of off games but overall he's been brilliant and more than capable at Championship level, calm, composed for the most part and certainly plays like a more experienced player.

I think most Stoke fans were dreading the thought of a call back in Jan when you guys were struggling for defensive players.

Is he ready for the PL yet? Maybe, maybe not but I think another 12 months in the Championship and he will be one of the better in the league.

Overall would love to have him back for another season, solid 8/10 for me.
