Would we be better off in 2013/14 with or without Baldini

There's been some speculation this week about Baldini's position - I'm torn as to whether I want him around for next year. On the one hand, he's spent £100m without much of a return, particularly on our three biggest signings - Lamela, Soldado and Paulinho. Capoue hasn't shown much, Eriksen has shown a lot while Chiriches and Chadli have good games and bad. Undoubtedly a mixed bag - and a bloody big mixed bag for the number of incoming players. All of which has translated to a poor season, even if we did finish 6th, have European football and so on.

On the other hand, Directors of Football who preside over transfers can't really be judged this soon to their acquisitions. Soldado may yet come good, Lamela may fulfil his promise. If we sack Baldini tomorrow and a year from now, all of those players are firing (unlikely, I know) - we'd probably regret that decision. I am always reminded of Comolli who, despite his flaws, made a number of signings who shone after his departure.

The other confounding issue for me is Baldini's offer to resign as AVB was sacked. As DoF, he's meant to be there long term to oversee the players coming and going while the managerial position remains something of a hot seat. If he's got itchy feet as soon as it comes to that, is this the man to occupy that position?

I remain unconvinced either way, frankly. I think a DoF position is necessary as no manager is likely to be given enough time to build 'his' squad at White Hart Lane but we do need some continuity. I don't know who we'd get instead of Baldini, though.

To be fair, I think Baldini offered to resign as:

a) He was requested by AVB who left
b) His signings failed to produce and lead to AVB leaving

He's got integrity and takes responsibility, so can't fault him tbh. Like you say, despite the pitchforks for Soldado et al*, they may have a great 2nd season and show Baldini got it

*yeah that's right Gibbs, I used it again

Spotted and jotted on a flight to barca.

So is that Lloris or Vertonghen out the door?

POLL: Do you like green apples or red apples?
Answer 1: Yes
Answer 2: No

just seen this is a revived older topic... my point stands anyway though

Apparently off to have dinner with Luis Enrique, whom Baldini described as the best manager he's ever worked with. Unsurprisingly, not as kind words for both Tim and AVB (which with regards to the latter is perfectly in line with what I heard through the grapevine via a source)

We have our old scout back now, to help spot top players (Broomfield? Name escapes me)
Baldini has shown he gets deals done.
Between them I have hope things can go well.

As an aside, this summer Baldini has had a year to prep himself. He pulled 7 players last year, did the business side brilliantly, and to be fair all 7 have merit (and IMO will do better this year). Im interested to see what he can do having settled in.

It's a big year for him. I am a supporter that hasn't expected anything of our new signings this year as I believe it takes a year for a player to settle. So with this in mind this year is when I think his signings are expected to perform and therefore we can start to judge him.
Perhaps bigger than that though would be how he and Pochettino work together. As DoF I suspect he had a significant input into the decision to bring him in. Given who we signed last year, the systems that these players played in before ariving at WHL (with the exception of Soldado) I can see them fitting into a system under the new coach. Basically I see small glimpses of a plan/style and with every new signing (coach and player) that fits into this plan/style the picture should get clearer.
