Ex-Spurs Player Brennan Johnson

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

It's not true that Frank has figured him out from day one. He was, and maybe still is, desperate to fill that huge gap in LW with him as an inside forward who was supposed to be the finisher to Kudus' facilitator on the right.

An inside forward needs to be able to pose a threat to defenders on 1v1s though, running in to empty spaces without the ball is only part of the job description. So the experiment failed, exacerbated by the fact that we at the moment also lack a 10 that can help with chance creation.

Now that Frank is choosing this anti football extraordinaire as his hill to die on, there is little place for him in it. He won't whip a cross in, he won't win many 50/50s, he won't head the ball in from a corner with 15 people surrounding him. Pointless having him out there under these circumstances.

Goals = the bar is low
Assists = the bar is low
Good skill and taking on full back = the bar is low

He sort of beat a man and then his cross got blocked hahahahaha. It’s something you’d expect your winger to do repeatedly in a game and more successfully!

He’s not scoring he’s not assisting and what he actually did was what I’d expect of a championship level winger.

Insanely basic player. He offers a purple patch or two a season where he taps it in at the back post a lot but that’s fucking it.

He has almost never assisted since his first season btw.

Asking honestly - what exactly is happening in this topic?

No one is suggesting that he should be nailed on starter. Nor do I see anyone arguing that we need better winger.

So what exactly is wrong in pointing out some improvements, as little as they might be.
Why is there such an urge to "show them" or crap on the posts/posters pointing out positives? Really hard to understand.

playing im is effectively playing with 10 men ... then having to move our most effective creative force from his best position aka kudus from the right to the middle where he loses some of that attack & danger is more debilitating to the team having to accommodate an overpriced BJ.... offers very little in a TF team , a cone would be more active & effective

You mean the first season when he was one of the highest assistors in the league and Ange then decided he didn't want him with the ball anymore? Where both he and the manager publicly stated his role has now changed and Ange doesn't want him involved in the build up and wants him on the end of the chances.

Anyway this is a boring argument and people try find negative in a positive result because they're bored so target the easy targets. You literally tried to take his goal in the Europa away from him and then questioned whether his goal Vs city was actually his because of the deflection (despite it being given to him and the shot being on target).

Yeah I mean that season where he was exceeded his expected assists and has never replicated it again. Apparently because he doesn’t want to, although it’s never seen for Wales or now Frank either. Funny that .

I was joking about the goal in the final .. it’s his, it also doesn’t say anything about his quality as a player. I’m pretty sure I didn’t say anything about his goal vs City.

The guy is a pure tap in merchant who isn’t scoring tap ins. It’s that simple.

Yes you did say something after city. You asked if it was really Johnsons goal because of the deflection, it was definitely you and due to your denial now, you must understand now how ridiculous that sounded.

"Apparently because"
You think it's pure coincidence that he assisted so much without scoring that much then the following season he scores so much without assisting? The manager and Johnson literally both came out and spoke about his role change (which btw led to him being one of thee highest scoring wide players).

"Isn't scoring tap in"
Yeh because he's not playing and when he does play he plays on the left. Who cares anyway...even if he did start scoring again you (as well as lots of others) will find a way to be negative

Interesting that he had a far better first season with us than Son where we actually won a trophy and he still receives such negativity. He was more important to Spurs winning that trophy than Son was in his last season with us. He started off well this season got dropped for players which have done worse than him. Is there players better than him in the world yes. But I think he's our best option to pick to score goals up front at the moment.

He’s been here 2 seasons and I wouldn’t say either was a good season for him.

Also debatable that any other LWs have done worse than him. If you are just going to quote G/A, then don’t bother because there’s way more to the game than that.

He’s a limited player that does have a quality that could be useful to us. Hopefully he gets better in the areas of his game that he is lacking, which is most of them.

I couldn’t care less because even when he does score I know he’s been rubbish and so do most fans with eyes. The guy scores 1 in 3 which is decent and does nothing else for 89 mins and you’ll call it golden.

Ok let’s see his assist record return now he’s not just forgotten how to do it. Or maybe since he hasn’t done it before spurs for club or country and hasn’t after … maaaaybe it was a fluke??

He’s had plenty of minutes. People are negative because he is a horrid player to watch and frankly a bit cowardly and lazy too. He was a bit better in that regard vs Everton but the bar is in hell.

So a good season isn't scoring goals and winning a trophy its doing mystery other stuff. Ok what's that other stuff? What player has done better than him? We have one potential world class player and that's Van de ven the rest is about trying to find the best at the moment.

I am very much arguing we need to sign a better winger. And I'm pretty sure the majority agree.

We desperately need to sign a first choice LW, make Odobert the backup, then have Kudus first choice on the right with Kulu his rotation/backup when he returns.

We should sell Johnson at the first opportunity while he still has a semblance of value. If we keep him he should purely be used as a specialist that we bring on when we're winning, against top teams that play a high line or against dross. He's got his uses but he's way too much of a passenger for a team with our aspirations.

I don't think a win means we should be blindly positive about everything - this is the Johnson thread after all.

Myself and others have been very positive about Danso, Vicario, Bentancur, Van de Ven etc in their threads after the Everton game because they all played well, but when I see a glaring weakness in our team I'm not just gonna pretend it doesn't exist just because we won.
