Ex-Spurs Player Brennan Johnson

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Everyone wanted him gone because he was mouthy and the football was horrible.

We would have a back five of :
Vic
Porro Vdv Romero Danso Spence/Udogie.
Bentancur Pal
Simmons Richarlison Kudu

How many goals from open play would they score?

Not really seeing your point?

At the end of the day he made it work in the Premier League and we had our best (short) period in the new stadium football wise when he was managing us.

Doesn't mean the formation doesn't work, it does - you clearly need the right profiles for it.

We averaged exactly 2 goals a game under Conte in a decent enough sample of 56 league games, albeit with two world class attackers in Kane and Son.

His football was considered boring primarily due to the fact that memories of the golden days of Pochettino era were relatively fresh in people's minds back then, and were considered the reference point to compare the successors against.

His football was only boring in the 2nd season when we weren't creating chances and everyone clocked his Kane drop deep, Son run in behind gameplan.

There are exceptions, quoted above. But yes, a traditional 5 at the back isn’t ideal for flowing football, but our football is hardly attractive just now.

Everyone took the piss out of Amorim for continuing with his system last season without the players to play it. But we are watching the same thing happen here with hardly a murmur.

Our “best” winger is Kudus, who thinks he’s a 10, wants to be a 10 and played most of his career as a 10. BJ isn’t a winger. Tel? Fuck knows. Odobert? Hardly proven.

We don’t have a squad that can play 4231, so we should stop doing it. Maybe after a couple of windows, we would have, so can revert then. Meantime, go with what we have.

I’d sooner have BJ up top rather than Richie as at least he’s got a semblance of ball control but just lacks aggression

People that say this really don't understand football sorry, Johnson doesn't have any hold up play or back to goal, none whatsoever so when he's the out ball and needs to hold defenders of what do you think is going to happen? Then there's the fact that he hasn't played a day as a striker in his football career...

Whichever way you cut it.
It means taking out a 10 and replacing him with a CB.
So for us to do it now - as has been suggested it would be:
Danso replacing Simmons/Kulu or Maddison

My point is - it makes very difficult to play attractive football.
Danso instead of Simmons. Woolwich, Liverpool and City would and don't do it.
It was successful for one season in the entire history of the PL.

But you can play 'attractive' football using that formation, teams like Leverkusen, Atalanta, Inter have proved that and as I said Conte has proved it in the PL, you saw that yourself.

Also there are a load of different styles to setup with in a back 5, you don't have to not exclusively play with a 10 for example, Leverkusen Alonso played with twin 10's as does Amorim at Man Utd, Conte played with a false 9 in Kane.

Nowadays its not as popular because there's a lot of managers cloning Pep ball and a lot of clubs are trying to copy his blueprint, that doesn't mean that the formation cannot be successful...like all formations you need the correct profiles for it.

Yeah I get what you mean. In a way I think a team who is ready to commit to a solid 352 setup could be very strong in the modern game with packed defences and tight midfield battles as it's a very compact formation which allows for crossing from deep positions into two centre forwards. It doesn't seem to be popular at the minute but the game is always evolving and I think there's for sure a gap in the market so to speak for a team that can do it well. You would just have to have a squad very well suited to the formation to pull it off (which actually we are not too far from with our current squad! A striker and a crossing LB would see us very well suited)
Agree and a I think a decent pair up top could wreak havoc if they have the right skill set

Spurs players present and those thinking or hoping to come at some point.

Note of caution. Hope Johnson stays at the club.

If not, you risk becoming the next fixation of warped interest and complete bias.

Don't say you weren't warned.

The opinions of the fans are very low on the list of reasons why players join a club. They really don’t give a flying fuck what fans think.

Johnson leaving or staying is utterly irrelevant to any player’s intentions.

I was being flippant mate.

It's more about posters on this forum at least needing a whipping boy.

Who just so happens to be our most clinical finisher, by some distance.
