Match Brighton & Hove Albion vs Tottenham Hotspur - Sunday 6th October - 16:30KO

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Defending requires discipline but also - there’s that old adage - you defend as a unit, which you’ve described above.

I can only think of two back lines that I had confidence in at Spurs…

Walker - King - Woodgate/Dawson - Assou-Ekotto

Parker screening

And

Walker - Alderweireld - Vertonghen - Rose

Dembele screening.

Not everyone will agree with the above, but we have rarely been renowned for good defending in my time as a Spurs fan.

I felt those back 4s, particularly the latter knew what their jobs were. Funnily enough, Walker is in both.

At the moment, despite what could be said that is good about our back 4, there is a lack of discipline and attention and togetherness at times and we really do get punished when that happens.
You have fully nailed this bravo. Feel the exact same way. This basketball we are playing absolves the unit of learning to absorb pressure and become resilient in its face. I've NEVER in all the years I've watch this game seen a team win anything meaningful without the ability to do this. I honestly don't think it's possible.

Easily the worst 45 minutes under Ange. By quite some distance. All the more shocking because it came out of nowhere.

Real trust breaker. The response after this fucking international break will be... crucial to say the least...
It’s funny how many of these ‘worst’ games / half’s keep coming up. It was only two weeks ago that Coventry was diabolical.

I actually feel worse about it today than I did yesterday.

I heard one of our supporters calling our football Russian Roulette and I agree entirely now, it's just throw everything up in the air and see what happens over 90 minutes.

His comments about entertaining and hopefully get the result don’t make sense. As we hardly attacked in the 2nd half. Their goalie had one attempt to save. All this BS about us attacking at 2-0. It wasn’t like that really. They scored early on in 2nd half. It wasn’t even a transition. One of their goals started from their goalie and they scored 5 passes later.
If all that mattered was entertaining we 100% should have kept Tanguy N'dombele he's holds the compilation record. Stepovers pirouette Ange missed a trick. He was a one man Vegas residency.

Maybe, just maybe, he's actually good? As anyone who watched his games for us last year could have told you. Or any of his Villareal games the two years prior.

Ange utterly misused him, preferring a crocked Maddison who served up stinker after stinker for 6 months straight.
Always thought Gio could do a job. He’s just the sort of player this system would like. Hard working, not afraid to tackle but importantly always looking to play a quick cutting forward pass. Too many of our players want to take 5 touches before releasing it.

Brighton did well at half time to regroup and re-organise. However, we were still very much in control of the game. Mistakes by Udogie and (once again) Romero can't be attributed to the coach and our tactics.

Brighton did deserve a goal - but once again, defenders making mistakes that shouldn't be happening at this level let us down.

80m for Romero in the summer? Fuck yes.
Yes they made mistakes but it was bco we were so passive I trying to win the ball back. The front 3 in 2nd offered nothing to that end.

I never said he wasn't. I agree Ange misused him. Other managers did too. He never seemed to get a run of games on the times he was with us and healthy.

I do wonder if the players just can’t keep up the high energy, heavy pressing and unwavering focus for the entire 90 minutes, especially in a league as physical and pacy as the Premiership. Ange doesn’t seem to want to change his style of play in-game, so it seems like early subs are needed to help sustain the physical tempo and concentration.
Which for all the money spent he doesn’t want to use.

How young was the starting 11? There was no teenagers in there ffs! They’re CM had a 19 year old in it and the other lad I think is 20.
Very young. Not a single 30 year old in this team at Son's absence. Vicario would be the oldest player, finding his feet in the league himself rather than a veteran of many campaigns.

at 2-0 at HT, you come out second half get compact and counter with pace, johnson and werner on the break. the onus is on them to come at us. we win that comfortably 4-0 with the right change to be compact and counter, thats what a proper football manager does. the beauty of getting a lead in football is to make it an easier game where they have to attack you, counter attacking is the easiest way to play football.

Sorry I wasn't implying you were. That was targeted at the (many) Spurs fans who've somehow convinced themselves he's crap.

Also, what's weird is Gio did get a run of games under Ange, and was largely excellent (goals against Villa, City, and generally very good performances). But then he was inexplicably dropped for the rest of the season in favour of Maddison who was clearly unfit and putting up terrible performances week after week. Even Hojbjerg and Skipp would usually see the pitch before Gio.

For me it was one of the early signs Ange either didn't have a good sense of what he was watching on the pitch, or was too blinded by his favourites to make rational decisions.
