I think the fact that he is one of the most 'experienced' outfield players plays a part as well. Without any research, 3 years of CL, 50+ caps should/could only be matched by Verts and perhaps Dembele (Lloris is not outfield...). To some extend he seems to be Poch' man on the pitch - the 'cool' head.
I know I am seeing this through teinted glasses, but I also think most doesn't recognize his defensive work. As in his time in Ajax, he seems often to be the one who decides wether to go for the early press or sit back and take 3 mins of air (not that Kane or Lamela doesn't do it, he seems to instigate more though). His lack of physicality is a reacurring theme, though he has obviously improved 3 seasons straight now. Defensive wise he tends to 'close areas' more than go for the man/ball - which I have not seen a single observation/post on. A hugely important role though IMO, forcing CBs to play sideways or hoof instead of an incisive pass.
When watching other threads on our players, it also seems that most seems to forget he is 23, Mason is older, Caroll and Son the same age. Kane, Pritch and N'jie just a year younger. Thing is, his name has been touted for so long. Most of the other names mentioned are regarded as 'young talent' to most, while Eriksen is judged from other standards (understandably though).
BUT - I still agree that he needs to add to his game - if he could get just 10% of Kane's 'selfishness' (which i love btw) and Kane get 10% of CEs vision, they would dominate the league for years IMO.
We Danes tend to compare any player with a bit of skill and flair to Michael Laudrup. Thing about ML is that he didn't become the ML we remember before joining Barcelona at age 24 - before that he was more 'ordinary'. Where CE compares to ML most IMO might be in his mentality - he is very softspoken, almost introvert and/or shy. So, hopefully next year is the year he takes his talent to the next level - to me he got all the skill needed, just need a bit more between the ears.
Anyways, as most on here I hope he makes that next development step starting now (NOW!) as that should be just in time to get us into the top 4 before seasons end. If he really has been THAT poor this season, imagine what would happen if he started playing well, considering our league position and the fact that we have been playing 10 v 11 for quite some time according to some.
On another note, I really hope Pritch comes back from the states ready to challange and inspire him!
