Player "Club Trained" Players/Goalkeepers

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

It will be interesting to see if Lankshear is kept with the club this year as he will qualify as club trained for UEFA competitions if he does.

Similarly, Bergvall and Gray can both become club trained if they stay with us every season until they are 21.

Question marks over Ash Phillips being club trained due to age (and him beng loaned out last season). Also, I think that Pape-Mate Sarr could have qualified as club trained if we had not loaned him out, and instead will now be a NHG player.

With Devine, Donley, Dorrington, Hall, Moore, Scarlett etc. all counting as U21 in league and B-List in UEFA for now, but will be club trained should they stay with us long term, the squad limitations are not really a problem any more.

The squad 'club trained' footballer rule is likely to ease a little this coming season 24/25 if Ange feels that a couple of youngsters are good enough and will play enough minutes (say play significant minutes in say 20 or 30 out of 60 potential matches so as to rest other players) - much less than this and whilst its good for player development it doesn't really rest the more experienced players.

In 24/25 whilst I'd love Mickey Moore to play a lot, its more likely that he's eased into the squad and it maybe the 2nd half of the season before he plays much - and indeed its vital not to overplay him when young as otherwise his career will be shorter than it should be (Michael Owen the classic example - star at aged 18, declining from age 25). Same will be the of the likes of Hall, and both are likely to alternate between training and playing u21 and first team football..

So the question will become whether Ange can offer some of the slightly older youngsters - Devine, Donley, Lankshear, Scarlett enough first team minutes in at least one half of the season 24/25 to make a difference or at least enough development minutes such that its a better career decision than a loan where playing time should be more plentiful.

Moving into 25/26 (season after the coming one) I'd like to think several of our youngsters can become real contributors to the squad and reduce minutes played of more established stars. And indeed there may be further candidates coming through including Abbott and Black.

I think Sarr joined Spurs on 27 August 2021, after the season started, and thus slightly too late to allow him to meet UEFA's Club trained rules.

Bergvall and Gray may become Club trained in due course - their first hurdle is to become a List B player (2 years at Spurs) as before then they will need to be registered as members of the squad like the more experienced players at Spurs.

But its a sea change from where we were under Conte to now in terms of the prospects for Club Trained footballers - from no chance of anyone to the question is how many can we get over the next couple of seasons.

The future is bright, and its lilywhite !

Are all of the following able to become club trained?
- Bergvall
- Gray
- Odobert
- Yang
- Vuskovic

is this subject to them not being loaned out?

This season the lack of Club Trained players is severely impacting the squad for UEFA competitions such as Europa League (or in a future season Champions League) as lack players who both meet the technical criteria (minimum 3 years at Spurs before age 21 etc) as well as them being very good players.

However we do have players coming through who might just make it if we develop them properly, possibly starting off as List B before becoming Club Trained, so (by way of illustration) we might see the following players become eligible

2025/26 Devine and maybe Scarlett
2026/27 Lankshear, Donley, maybe Abbott, Gray (List B), Bergvall (List B)
2027/28 Moore, Gray, Bergvall, Hall ? Black ? maybe Vuskovic (List B)

Not all will make it, but we do have a number who might which might mean that by 2026/27 we get to having the minimum 4 Club trained players or a couple of Club Trained Players and a couple of experienced List B players which is pretty much as good.

And 2025/26 might get better than I've suggested above if both Lankshear and Moore are considered good enough players to keep with the squad either as List B or Club Trained players. But equally some players might slip back a season as develop more slowly than hoped

But it does depend on good development through loans and/or Spurs giving them enough playing time to help develop them.

Exciting times to follow youth development !

Odobert signed for an associate club on the 12th of August, 2023. His birthday is in November meaning he signed before he turned 18. Shirley he is at least home grown?

I don't know the European rules but if it's 3 years before his 21st birthday....

Yeah ignore that above hahahahaha

It’s not something confined to us . Woolwich are 2 down also on CT players.
Easy enough to fill as all under 21 are available.
Any reason why Max Robson isn’t in as CT. He would just be filling a space, same as Whiteman.
Why the fuss, we haven’t got a full 25 man squad of over 21 players for the premier league.

Max Robson not on preseason tour, so my guess is Ange does not rate him.

Our issue this season is Ange clearly thinks most of u21's would benefit from a loam rather than the number of minutes they would get at Spurs (and anything much under say 1.000 mins a season I'd agree with him). Consequently those players are not available to supplement the over 21 squad - looks like Lankshear and Moore (both attackers) will be in EL squad under list B.

Our u21's do not have any standout inverted full backs at an age who would be automatic selections for List B - Leo Black who has played a lot as inverted RB for u18's and looked extremely good is very likely y not physically developed enough to play mens football and similar issues for other promising u21's who are good players but might be a year away from being first team candidates. But we will see whether the likes of Dorrington makes List B when that is published just before first EL match in about 3 weeks time.

In PL we will have a one or two extra players than EL due to different rules - so a slightly bigger squad with fewer gaps, which is why EL is more of an issue

The precise rule is :

An "association-trained player" is a player who, between the ages of 15 (or the start of the season during which the player turns 15) and 21 (or the end of the season during which the player turns 21), and irrespective of the player's nationality and age, has been registered with a club or with other clubs affiliated to the same association as that of the player's current club for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons (i.e. a period starting with the first official match of the relevant national championship and ending with the last official match of that relevant national championship) or of 36 months. In the context of this paragraph, the season immediately preceding a player’s 15th birthday may be counted if the player's birthday is after the last match of the relevant national championship but before or on 30 June (winter championships) or 31 December (summer championships), and the season immediately following the player's 21st birthday may be counted if the player's birthday is on or after 1 July (winter championships) or 1 January (summer championships) but before the first match of the relevant national championship.

I rather think Odobert was signed a couple of days after season 23/24 started so that season doesn't count so he cannot complete 3 seasons before he's 21

He becomes 21 on 28 November 2025, so I think cannot complete 36 months at Burnley and Spurs to meet that criteria either.

So ultimately I think he remains an overseas trained player

Personally don't think it's worth it to spend £30m on a Madueke/Edwards/CCV/Walker-Peters just for squad numbers, especially if we end up in the Europa league. Rather us go in with a smaller squad, rely on youth for the extra depth and plan long term by signing players like Bergvall/Devine/Vuskovic that can eventually fill those spots. Said it before but would love us to go in big for Archie Gray this summer while he's still able to qualify as club-trained, would put us in an excellent position going forward.
