An angry Rafael Benítez has told Chelsea fans that they are “wasting their time” by continuing to voice their discontent at his appointment – and declared that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
The Blues boss snapped when asked about the unwelcoming reception large sections of the club’s supporters have given him since he took over from Roberto Di Matteo back in November.
“They are wasting time with their banners and songs,” Benítez said following his side’s victory at Middlesbrough to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.
“They don’t need to worry about me. I leave at end of the season.”
The Spaniard also said that the club giving him the title of interim coach was a “massive mistake”. He added: “These Chelsea fans have an agenda. They are damaging the image of the club.
“I’m experienced. I’ve won the Champions League, the Spanish league twice, the FA Cup. They [the fans] are a group with an agenda.
“They have to support the team instead of wasting time making banners.
“They have to support the team. They gave me the title of interim manager which is a massive mistake. I am the manager and I will manage this club. The fans are not helping us.
“I am a professional and I will do my job. At the end of the season I will leave.”
