Match Coventry City v Tottenham Hotspur | Carabao Cup 3rd Round | Sept 18th | 8pm

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Our squad is so built for 3-5-2 with wing backs. Would utilise dragusins height, play to strengths of Porro, Udogie and Spence. You could probably convert Odobert to wing back too. Wing backs to get balls into box so Solanke might actually get service. Plenty of decent midfield options for the 3 in the middle although we’re probably shy of a proper CDM like Gomes. Play Son off Solanke as he can’t seem to play on his own up top or on the wing anymore. Kulu could be either a CAM or 2nd striker. In fact you could have different options for the 2 up top. Son for speed, Kulu for guile, Richi or Lankshear for aerial presence (all assuming to play with Solanke.
Yes this. Angeball requires tricky touchline hugging technical dribblers yet we don't have any! Albeit I'd say a 343 would suit us best with the two wide forwards being essentially inside forwards with the wingbacks overlapping them. Sonny, Madders and Kulu would all be suited to this role.

How long have you followed Spurs? Ugly performances away against lower teams is very much the "normal" for us in the cups. We made 8 changes from the NLD, and it was not in any way realistic that we would improve from a rather dull display against Woolwich. Getting our better players on the pitch, changed the game, and even though we rode our luck, we won.

I can get that some people have lost faith in Ange, but to have THIS game as a "turning point" is beyond strange..
That's true, going back to teams like Port Vale and Notts County or more recently Colchester and taking a 2-0 lead to Zagreb then losing 3-0. We are still in the hat, that's progress.

Half the posters are mad we won.
I don’t think any real fan can be mad we won , maybe frustrated with 85 minutes of pure shite against a shit team we should
Have dominated , it’s strange though as Leicester , Newcastle and Goons I thought we actually played better but didn’t win where as last night we played shit and won!
Football is about small moments though so maybe just maybe this could be a good turning point for Ange

Another match where our wingers created absolutely nothing. Every goal we scored this season is either results of Deki's/Madders moment of brillance - or transitions when we steal the ball.

The performance is the type of shite you can get when make 8 changes and throw in a bunch of reserves and kids, away to a plucky underdog.

I think Ange is working with some absolute dog shit offensive/creative players and clearly some of the players we've brought in are not going to move the fucking needle.

I'm just not seeing where Grey is going to excel? He's not a FB, is he a 6, an 8 ? I can see he has some solid attributes, but It's really hard to see him turning into an outstanding player. Either way, I don't see a position where Grey becomes a starter anytime soon.

It took bentancur 85 minutes to get a rocket up his fucking arse, push on and press - with the help of Maddison - and win a ball. When he finally did it, it was great and set up Johnson who took his chance really well. But fuck me, where was that urgency and aggression for 85 minutes? Plod plod plod.

Even Udogie is starting to annoy me. Guy just never produces anything in forward areas. His touch and passing can get really sloppy at times and he'd never have got himself where Spence did to score that goal, or come up with the deft finish.

Some of Ange's subs (and this is a running theme) are fucking bonkers and make no sense at all, in fact they seem counter intuitive. The Son/Solanke Maddison/Bergval subs made very little sense, surely it should have been Werner and Sarr off? He then tactical corrects that sub 10 minutes later with the Kulu/Werner sub, pushing Son out left and having Kulu as the F9. Such a convoluted way of doing things.

Maddison, was the biggest difference, he started demanding the ball - where previously we had no one prepared to get on it and try to take any risk, it was him zipping a quick, vertical zipped pass that started the first goal, Kulusevski was a bit fortunate that his through ball went through legs but if he meant it then it was good but still left Spence with plenty to do, and Spence shows great determination and a deft finish. And it was Maddison pressing with Bentancur that set up Johnson, who finished really smartly.
Disagree about Gray, the kid is going to be the mustard!

Anyone saying that kit was bad doesn’t know ball.
Yes.
The Spurs Shop describes it perfectly...

"Together We Rise. This jersey is all about growing the game we love. The swoosh design signifies the unity between the team; together we can inspire the next generation of athletes. This shirt celebrates pioneering female creatives in Tottenham, with the all-over print drawing inspiration from the "Seven Sisters" elm trees."

Who invents this shit? ^^^

Great post.

The one thing that I'd argue is holding us back from playing a back 3 consistently is that we need one or two more CBs to be able to rotate given the amount of games that we may play.

The workaround I guess is to pull a Poch and play 4-3-3 but have one of the CMs drops into the backline like he did with Dier. And then you can more readily commit to the 3-4-3/3-5-2 when you have one or two more CBs in.

A certain Pep Guardiola once said "it's my job to get you to the final third. It's your job to finish" and that "the final 3rd is talent, not tactics"

That's basically what Ange does. We are one of the best teams in the league at build up out of a press and interplay in midfield, it's beyond that which is the problem and that's a personnel issue. Not system.

If we had Doku, Savio, Haaland as our front three. We'd have even less issues.

99% of the teams do not have Doku, Savio and Haaland level of talents there.
If that is a requirement for system to work, it is total garbage of a system.

Just look at what Mourinho got out of Kane and Son, just look what Conte got out of Deki.
It is so obviously not just talent in final 3rd.

Also we actually do need more from midfield too, from players like Madders and Bentancur to do more of this quick passing. Just as you said - our first goal was a very good one. Because we played one and two touch passes with good movement from our players. Something that I almost did not see at all in NLD - maybe max 2-3 times throughout 90. Other of it was just pondering around in midfield and pondering around in final 3rd.
