Naive. They’re all professional footballers who want to do well for themselves and want to be in a good team that can compete. None of them as far as I’m aware grew up Tottenham fans and even if they did that washes away when it’s your job. If we were hovering around this position in Kane and Sons time they’d be itching to get out. All this I love the club is crap. They might like the culture of a club or the team they are apart of but the actual club. I don’t think so.
There's a middle ground though.

I think most footballers don't have anything like a fan relationship with clubs. You do get the odd exception - Sonny for instance is clearly a sentimental fella and I truly believe he loves Spurs. And I get a similar feeling from some of the others like Sandro for instance. But most just see it as a job and will happily switch allegiances in a heartbeat for a better deal.

But if you're given the club captaincy that does have genuine meaning and responsibility. I don't think it's wrong or naive to expect more from the player given that role. Not pure fandom, but some care, professionalism and leadership at least.

The fake anger is so transparent. They’re delighted, probably because they think this rules him coming back into a stronger DeZerbi team and and making them look wrong.
Nah come on. It's not 'fake anger'.

If you're not pissed off that our club captain decided he didn't want to be around when we're facing a one match final to avoid relegation, then you would be the minority.

It isn't about who had what agenda.

Even Romero's biggest fans should find his decision disgusting.

You're right about the media nonsense but it's pretty obvious he's been forced to come back due to the backlash. If his return was always planned De Zerbi would've said so in the presser or his agent would've mentioned it when trying to defend him being in Argentina.

Fair play for admitting the error of his ways and coming back but let's not pretend he was always intending to and there was no story here.

He's now not public enemy number 1 at least but it's yet another in a long list of fuckups and it's abundantly clear he's unfit to captain our club.

Maybe.

If he’s leaving and doesn’t give a shit, it wouldn’t make sense to come back though. His leverage to force a transfer would be not coming back and making it look like the relationship with the club is over. Especially because that would help force the price down for Spanish clubs that like to play broke.

I think sometimes it’s just a big old load of bollox to milk clicks out of Spurs fans.

That’s the thing people are missing, he’s our CAPTAIN. If this was Kulu, Kudus, etc then nobody would give a shit. But he’s the captain, with that comes responsibilities and being at our games is one of them.

Yeah, not sure why that's deemed an odd position to take. If anything the bending over to defend Romero is the far weirder take given how he's acted across the season as a whole.

I'm glad he's decided to come back. If he hadn't then he'd basically be dead to me as a Spurs player, but he's at least realised he screwed up and taken action even if he was pressured into it.

Personally I'm still sick of his shit and think we should move him on but if he's still here next season and RDZ wants him I'm not gonna have an agenda against the guy if he gets his head down and stops being a dick. Like most fans, I just want whats best for the club and a captain who acts like a captain.

I think law of averages he was just being a bit stupid and complacent rather than malicious. His team probably assumed Spurs would either be relegated or safe when they made these plans to go home - it's only come to a head because of the final day shootout and all the focus is on this single match. If we were already safe by now there's no story and barely anyone cares where he is.

But equally, as club captain, he shouldve been aware of this shit and made plans to return as soon as it became clear what might happen. The way the last few days have panned out it's so obvious he's only coming back cos he had to.

And if his main crime is being stupid and lacking awareness...that still makes him a shit captain and figurehead of the club.

I would love to think that the "going to Argentina for treatment" story was true, but in my heart I believe that he didn't think it would blow up as much as it has and he's been shamed to coming back. Suppose only Romero and his agent knows the truth,
Such a shame that it has turned out like this for the players that only a year ago were lauded as heroes.
ImO he should have doubled down on it. Come out with a post working with his physio. Tell everyone it's necassary to be in argentina for medical reasons.
The fact that he flew back now just confirms that all he really cared for was watching his old club and chill out in argentina.
Being his agent must be a nightmare.
Like shotgun said he is so thick it's cringe and laughable. I hope we can all get a laugh out of him when he is doing this kind of shit for another club next season.

Who knows

The one part of it I can believe is going home to start his rehab with Argentinian physios. He had to go back last year to get fit again. It makes perfect sense the club would agree to send him back.

Whether the plan was always to come back for the last game is one we will never know. We do know he’s here today and tbh I don’t even really care that much.

He can’t play either way so won’t have any impact on the game. The 11 on the pitch are the main attraction today.

This is right.

They are employees and the club is their workplace. They are also young players with agents in their ears constantly about bigger and bigger moves. And while a player may love his club and his teammates, they don’t think about any of the this way a fan does.

They play the game for a few years in their 20s and if lucky their 30s, and that is all. There’s a career to manage and a whole life after this to consider.

That doesn’t excuse disgraceful behavior, but their approach is always going to be different.

Loyalty is good but are we loyal to our own employers when we know they’d send us off for a bit of savings any day? Or would we be when there’s a better offer down the street?

How has he acted across the season? It’s been hysteria from fans that don’t like him, probably because he called out the board and quite rightly imo. What else has he done before this? Got sent off. We’re having a shit season and we’re all looking for a scapegoat, let’s have it right and the multis on here that continually call him out have become a hive mind.

It is probably best he moves on though whatever happens today. there’s a section of spurs fans that will always be on his back and it’s not worth all the noise.

Captain getting sent off for a 4 game ban (second red card of the season) during a critical period when we were absolutely ravaged by injuries and needed him most. That was the moment I really gave up on him as a remotely reliable captain/leader.

Anyway, whatever, I think I've probably been channelling a lot of my anger at this whole situation we're in at Romero over the past couple days. Might just mute this thread moving forward.
