searched the web, you are right my information was wrong. he had 18 retrospective bans. The last one he didn’t serve as liverpool sold him, but I remember that the media was all over him and he get exposed and the talk was the referee was generous to him and he will be noticed so liverpool sold him and that was my intial point. I think that's being generous to Romero. He isn't so much harshly done by, but he is the goon/enforcer role - the player that is there to rile up the opponents, intimidate etc. This league isn't cut out for that, and it makes more sense why he was successful in one that did (Italy) and is so revered by the king of the goons, Simeone.
He tackles to 'leave one on' the opponent and gets caught out by it. Generally, not a clever player. For me, though, the reason why both Romero and VdV are problematic is that they are not really defenders - their praise and plaudits come from stuff they tend to do out of position.
Toby goes into it quite a lot why we can not rely on him. One to listen to on centre backs. Not the first ex player either to say get rid of Romero. Brad Freidel did too fairly recently.
Classic example of a player being great for his country so everyone thinks he’s great for the club. The truth is, he has never been great for us. Even at his best, he was merely good and that didn’t even last long.

I have to agree , I was one of the first to fall in love with Romero's no nonsense tackling and dealing with pressure , but then the luggage arrived . He's no good for the club when he's stuck in the stands because he's serving a 3 match ban . I thought that making him captain would rectify the chinks in his game , but it's made him worse .
