Player Cristian Romero

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Former Spurs striker Teddy Sheringham on Tottenham captain Cristian Romero:

"The biggest game in the history of the club. This is going to be one nervy game and when your captain is not there that does not set a good example for everyone. That is naughty, that is loose from whoever is letting him do what he wants to do.

"How does he even go about that? Is it ok if I go back to Argentina because my boyhood club are playing in an important game... What? Don't even ask the question! No! I need you alongside your teammates in the dressing room to give them some support. I can't believe he's asked the question, I can't believe he's been allowed to go. That sets a precedent that does."
Perhaps he has been allowed to stop him actually being disruptive.Again perhaps he didn’t have permission

I recall raising the issue much earlier in the season and got some stick for it, but when you had the likes of Palhinha and Mickey arguing with fans after defeats, he'd fucked off down the tunnel. He's never really come across as a 'captain' in matches or outside of them from a fans POV. Makes it seem like it's a BS gift in his contract.
Rather than it being a responsibility to lift the dressing room, he clearly sees the captaincy as the opportunity to do whatever the fuck he wants!

I just don't think he's captain material. I didn't get that from Hugo either - especially from AoN. I think it's similar with Kane, where he's a "good example" but he isn't a Roy Keane type that will enforce or that will command respect in the same way.

Ben Davies seems like he'd be closer to that on one side, and Joao Palhinha on the other. People talk about players we missed out on and all that, but I think our choice of captains has been what helped other teams kick on. The 'bleed for the badge' types who'd not stand for a player who liked an Woolwich post and would really instil a club 'culture'

My son got Romero's name on the back of an official Spurs shirt at the start of the season. It started peeling off after a month, so we sent it back to be repaired. The letters started coming off again a month after that. The club refused to do anything about it. Feels like that was a sign...

did they magically fix themselves before international breaks?

The word integrity is echoing around my head as it spins round and round in response to this Romero situation.

I actually can't believe this bastard has deserted us in the most important match of the club's history.

He has not only abandoned the fans but he has abandoned his teammates - the individuals with whome he has worked closely everyday for the past 5 years winning a European trophy along the way and he has basically given them a big 'fuck you'. How can someone do that?! These are supposed to be his brothers, how can one be so lacking in integrity?!

If he ever returns to the stadium, inevitably for an opposing team, I want to hear the most vociferous boos since judas.

I am absolutely livid about this, it is scandalous as Hoddle said and a kick in the teeth to the fans and his teammates.

Seems fair enough to me, not sure what all
the outrage is for.

I'd like to wobble Vinai's head.... Right off his fucking shoulders!!

I'm sure he means well and talks sense, but (apart from Hoddle & occasionally Ginola) I WISH our pro-Spurs media voices weren't from such average players as Gary Stevens, Jamie Redknapp & O'Hara, Ramon Vega, Mido and Tim Sherwood!!
Or does that say more about the dearth of talent we had a generation ago, who are now retired, and stuck for something to do??

Yeah, we'd have a FIT Romero flying off to Argentina to watch his boyhood club!! Imagine THAT?!!

What difference does it make?

They see clearly and through the sh!t of Romero and out it.

I am just relieved the Romero fans have not sought to defend this act of contempt.

It's bad enough having Sunday to deal with, but we are also enduring the sh!t of that lot winning the PL, albeit with more than a little help from their friends, being made more apparent in the hot weather.

I have said for a long time that some posters on here are more supportive of certain players and ex-managers than they are about the club.

Its fcuking shocking.

That'd be vice captain though surely? And the only leader I've seen through all this recently is maddison. Not seen many vdv interviews after the game.
Micky is captaining the team at the moment . That could in all likelihood be temporary because of Romero’s absence and Dejan and Madison’s absence. Perhaps he will still captain if he stays but as you say Madison should be on top of the list.

Either way you look at it, Davies and Romero can't play... They're only here to offer (or not offer) moral support...

The reason Maddison has been used as "cheerleader" from the bench is there has clearly been a chance he could and has now played some minutes....

Deki's probably just glad to be alive!

Everything about this season has been chaotic, shit, over scrutinised and gone against us...
Why should the final few days of the season be any different, and break the tradition of the last season or two?
Well, it could be different if he wasn't fucking off to Argentina. It would be one less thing for the media to pick at.

I'll tell you something for nothing, if Danny Blanch flower and Dave McKay were around today, they'd have beaten him Black and Blue.

NO club Captain does this in a situation like this, NONE!

Yeah never want to see him in a Spurs shit again.

No wonder we've a casual attitude as a team with this fella captain.

Who the fuck made him captain? FRANK LOL

If we had a difficult decision to make this summer about our direction for the back line or for our CB partnership and Romero has answered it, fine. And when we have so many holes to fill in our squad, someone who doesn't want to be here but can be sold for a good sum - great.

It will surely go down as another chapter in the book of "only at Spurs" to have your captain abandon you on the most crucial day for the club in living memory, if in fact that is what has occurred. Boggles the mind

If he were fit he'd be playing obviously, but the fact that he's seemingly said "Well I've played my last one there so I'll just fuck off" seems like a terrible business decision for him, and might even hurt the transfer market for him.

Always felt he'd be at Madrid or some such place if not here, he's a good player but not a leader and needs to be placed in a situation where leaders and a healthy culture already exist, because he's not internally motivated in that way.
