I just don't think he's captain material. I didn't get that from Hugo either - especially from AoN. I think it's similar with Kane, where he's a "good example" but he isn't a Roy Keane type that will enforce or that will command respect in the same way.
Ben Davies seems like he'd be closer to that on one side, and Joao Palhinha on the other. People talk about players we missed out on and all that, but I think our choice of captains has been what helped other teams kick on. Fucking off at such a critical point, disrupting our preparation, creating a negative story and upsetting the First Team camp. Stupid twat.
If he were fit he'd be playing obviously, but the fact that he's seemingly said "Well I've played my last one there so I'll just fuck off" seems like a terrible business decision for him, and might even hurt the transfer market for him.
Always felt he'd be at Madrid or some such place if not here, he's a good player but not a leader and needs to be placed in a situation where leaders and a healthy culture already exist, because he's not internally motivated in that way.
Irony is that this will probably happen. He'll end up making more money playing in a better team. For him this poor season will ultimately be to his benefit which is galling, but there's nothing to be done now but collect the transfer fee.
