The Europa League is a funny old thing quite frankly.
Until very recently it really hasn't been worth winning or even trying to win.
Too many games, in shitty parts of Europe, on Thursday nights, and then when you think you have a chance, you get a strong Dortmund or Atleti, knocked down from the CL. By which point your whole league season has gone tits up due to those Thurs/Sun fixtures and all the travel. And even if you did win it, your prize money was akin to winning one game in the CL and your actual prize was.....a place in next season Europa League.

Now there's CL football and NO CL teams, it's actually worth trying to compete in.
But the downside is it could only ever been won every other year. Mad in a way that nobody will ever be able to win back to back Europa/Conference leagues.
IMO the only reason the EL means more these days is simply because it’s not the worst form of Europe. The CL qualification for the winners has been around since 2015, so it’s not like that swung things. No one really cared when Utd won in 16. And I’d argue no dropdown from the CL has hurt its perception, since that’s one of the bigger criticisms our win has had.

I remember when the word ‘Europe’ in football media was basically shorthand for ‘Champions League’. I grew up in the ‘Thursday night, channel 5’ days; remember the 2-2 vs Chels away in 12/13 with the Adebayor screamer and after every goal scored, that song came out from both sets of fans because the game was seen as the CL decider?

The Conference has been a massive success for UEFA tbh, it’s seen as a somewhat respectable trophy and has massively increased the value of the two above it.

My 2 cents not that anyone cares. Great business man. Built the club up proper in the era of cheating and financial doping. Wouldnt bend over for the utds etc trying to poach our best players for fuck all. Boiled fergusons blood which is always good.
Peoples main crib with him in transfer dealings really. Meddled and interfering ruined relationships with other clubs. Football side of things v poor imo. Plus the olympic stadium shite was a massive low

When you look at the evidence in front of you, it appears for once Levy tried to go big on the transfer window, buying ready made players - without the usual focus on resale values and developing their worth..

He also allowed Ange to carry on in his job for the sake of a trophy rather than the financial gains from league positions..

And he got fired for it.

There is a possibility that the Lewis mob just want a chairman that focuses on financial gains rather than the football. Not sure why people mostly seem to think Levy's departure will be the catalyst for our explosion towards footballing dominance.

I've been thinking about this some more, and I genuinely think this is really exciting news.

The reason I say this, is because if the Lewis family were solely intent on continuing to turn a profit and make vast sums of money, they would keep Levy in charge as there is nobody better.

And removing Levy because they want to sell the club makes no sense. Because they could just remove Levy or overrule him, as they have just shown, Levy was essentially on there as long as Lewis family wanted him to be.

I don't really see how that was an obstacle to a sale.

So it must mean they want the club to be showing more intent on the footballing side. Only thing that makes sense.

Or may be Lewis is thinking Levy wasn't making enough profit and spending too much on players so asked him to go and bring in a banker to maximise profit and ignore success on the pitch?

Maybe Donna Cullen was removed first so they could have enough votes to push Levy out if needed.
It was clearly part of it. Cullen was a Levy ally and she went and two new board members around same time, one of which now in charge. All against the backdrop of us having our worst league season, needing a new manager again, a squad overhaul, and attempts to bring in new investment, naming rights, minority stakes etc. Problem is, ENIC if they want to keep Spurs, why would a lot change really? Different people but more of the same. Why would someone like Saudis want a minority investment and want to put money into the club? Joint ownership stuff rarely goes well. Better to sell the whole club outright to the tight owner.

Very short sighted if that’s the case as the fans have believed it’s Levy all along - if it turns out to be Lewis then the vitriol will turn on them and do Vivienne and Charlie have Levy’s Rhino skin?

I think we’ve brought in an accountant to set us up for a sale and Levy was cock blocking a lot of that with his insistence on being chairman

So true

Dean Austin took some awful stick back in the day. People forget during his first season he was playing quite well but broke his leg and was never the same after that.

Other players that stand out as scapegoats... Sissoko, Bentley, BJ in the modern era

Player to buck the trend was Lamela. He started off as a scapegoat but ended as a bit of cult hero.
Chris Armstrong (played an entire season through a groin injury where he was getting injections before every match), John Pratt, Tony Galvin, Jenas, even Ricky Villa got abused during his time with us. The list is endless.

Now we have Tel as the main man to pile in on, because Johnson, even though he still gets a lot, scored the winner in the ELCF, so the main focus has switched to Tel.

There seems to be some deep seated need, in some of our fanbase, to either worship or hate on players. You're either a legend or a dog, no middle ground.

I honestly don't know if this is the same within other fanbase, but I've never come across it anywhere near to the level we have, after following this game for over half a century.
Maybe it does exist with other fanbase, but I'd be willing to bet it doesn't come close to the degree we have in ours.

He may have spent 250 million over the last 5 years.

But we had European player lists with 4/5 goal keepers on it.

Just 1 LB/RB, like last season.

How many players left on frees, 4 this year alone.

Gave Doherty away because we loaned out more players than we should.

Levy spent, but it wasn't organised, targeted, and never really gave the team the depth it really required.

Not mention a lot the money spent was on opportunities, bargains and players near end of contracts.

Bloated our squad. And filled our limited wage bill with chaff and mediocrity.
I should correct myself to say that it's three quarters of a Billion spent in the last 5-6 years.

What you're saying is irrelevant to the point I answered though. The point made that it was spending that was "unlike Levy," whereas I've already pointed out that it was a window very much like the preceding ones. Similar amounts, similar profiles. About the only one you could say was outside the typical profile we've signed recently is RKM. Simons is comparable with the VDV and Romero signings.

Whilst you do have a point, it's off on a tangent to what the actual subject matters was.

They could of pushed through a sale. I think this is why we had the stories of external investment in a partial sale came in because Levy was trying to dilute the younger Lewis's, whom have been known that they did not like Levy and the power he wielded at Spurs. I am not saying it will get better but Levy will no longer be involved in everything and as a micro manager that he is that will hopefully be good for Spurs.

Not impossible. Imagine the board had been beating the drums of sacking Ange since Feb, and it's Levy backing him on the backdrop of Europa. Ange and Levy got the victory but club was financially hit because of 17th (not like it's alot from 12th anyway honestly, especially we got CL in the then end) and so the board decision was to sack both. Because AFAIK it's highly unusual when Ange was sacked, the term 'board decision' was used.
