Player Djed Spence

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

This meme has got completely out of control. You have no idea what Ange thinks/thought about Spence. So let's try and address facts, eh?

We know Spence was on the verge of being flogged to Genoa last summer. We don't know what happened next but presumably he went to the manager and stated he wanted to try and break into the team. Postecoglou gave him one last chance - one that all of Spence's previous managers except Steve Cooper hadn't.

That is fact. All we know for certain is that Spence was about to flogged for a loss. but ended up staying.

So now he's bottom of the pile. He has to prove himself. Train hard, show willing and fight for his chance.

That chance came against Coventry on 18th September. Came on second half - out of position as LB - and was great. Took his chance. Now he's caught the eye but he's still got a lot to prove. Porro is clearly number 1 RB; Udogie clearly number 1 LB. So it's going to be hard.

He's on the bench for the 3-1 win over Brentford. Fair enough. Still got a long way to go to break into the PL team.

He then gets 45 minutes in the win against United. Replaces Udogie (who is not injured just rested) for the second half and again plays well out of position. He's now trusted by the manager to have PL minutes when we're in good position. And is now an option to rotate in game out of position LB/RB. He has the managers trust. This is going well. He's moving up the squad ladder.

Then its the Brighton game - he almost certainly would have made a sub appearance if we were in control but disaster strikes and we throw away a 0-2 lead. Postecoglou relies on his 1st teamers to get out of the mess they created. Mistake? Probably. Understandable - probably. Most managers don't turn to fringe players to get them out of a jam.

And what happens next? Spence gets a groin injury. He misses 3 games. Back on the bench as an unused sub for Ipswich. Comes on late in the City win to help see it out. This groin injury is a set back. This is what stalled his progress.

The next 3 games is where Postecoglou leaves him on the bench as we suffer a series of disappointing results. This is the one patch of the year where you can legitimately say Postecoglou made a mistake. But considering Spence started at the bottom of the pile he wasn't getting ahead of Porro and Udogie who were NOT INJURED and we desperately needed results and under pressure managers rely on what they know has worked for them. But, yes, feel free to have a crack at Postecoglou for this stretch of games.

But Djed keeps going. Doesn't drop his head. Finally gets his chance when he starts against Southampton. He's great.

And hasn't missed a game since EXCEPT for the Wolves game where he was suspended. The Wolves game was where Udogie did his hamstring. Spence couldn't have played because he was suspended.

And since then he's played every game hes been available for and has now proved himself beyond doubt.

Those are the facts. If you look at them and still want to continue this fantasy that Postecoglou never gave him a chance or never believed in him then I'd suggest you are exhibiting "cult like" behaviour.

In this shitty clusterfuck of a season the one good thing - one feel good story - has been Djed Spence turning his career around with the help of the manager who gave him a chance.

Oh - and the REAL MISTAKE Postecoglou made wasn't in not believing in Spence (he clearly did as shown above) it was NOT BELIEVING in Brandon Austin. If he did then Spence gets in the EL squad over Forster and the whole process outlined above would have been accelerated.

Hang it in the Louvre.

IN 2 months from obscurity to Spurs'-Best-Player= the making of Spence.

Are there any more hidden gems being incarcerated in the youth team or reserves' locker room that we haven;t met
Jed.. or Djeds ? or out on long term loan in lower divisions? whatever happened to that Donley lad? Pearl of the Orient

Unless all the stuff you've heard 2nd hand about Spence is subjective and absolute crap from sources with an agenda.

You don’t even need to consider any of that noise.

Just look at his appearances and moves from club to club. I don’t even care why he wasn’t playing much at all those clubs, I doubt it was all on him and I doubt it had nothing to do with him.

I’m just happy to give him credit for the way he’s proven himself at this club with unbelievable performances.

He’s in with a shout to be our player of the season if he keeps this up.

Serious question, which English RB would you pick ahead of him for England? TAA on his track record and body of work but on form Djed is slowly forcing his way up the list and he’s not even playing RB.

Well that really is an impressive load of bollox

Can only assume you’ve shoehorned that into a pre-existing bias condition youre suffering

Apart from the fact it’s public knowledge Conte had no part in the signing and was in fact a DL signing …. There’s never any suggestion levy has input on team selection

Make of Ange what you want but he’s not part of that carry on as much as conte or Jose before him

Also take this opportunity to give a big shout out to tight bald cunt …. Fucking great signing …. Knows a player does our Daniel

There’s plenty of which to criticise DL no need for the esoterics
Conte detached himself from the signing and made it public that Spence was a 'club' signing.

That is true.

Conte therefore excused himself from picking Spence by making his views, about who signed Spence and how he felt about it, very public.

Ange has ignored Spence for 18 months though; no matter how you attempt to spin it in Levy's favour.

There can only be 2 explanantions for that.

1. Ange has watched Spence in training and didn't fancy picking Spence, at left or right back, ahead of Royal, Porro and Udogie until an injury crisis forced him to do so.

2. Ange rated Spence, was advised not to pick him despite his own instincts and could only justify picking Spence by pretending there was an unprecedented injury crisis or because there is a genuine injury crisis.

Either way it is not a great look for Ange and if the miser does indeed interfere in these matters, as he does with everything else, it explains a lot about what goes wrong at THFC from the recruitment to the playing squad.

There’s nothing I can do with that other than refer you to my original reply

Spence appeared to have problems at Boro.

During his loan to Forest he gained national exposure for his performances in the FA Cup.

The interest in Spence was then huge and Spurs won the race.

I would assert that Spence was better than anything Spurs had at that time at right back.

That would also explain the decision to purchase Spence ahead of Spurs rivals; against the wishes of the then manager.

Conte made it clear, by his words and his actions that Spence was not what he wanted and the signing was nothing to do with him.

So this leaves the unanswered questions; who made the decision to sign Spence and why was he continually left out of the team after Conte left?

Spence appears to have a great attitude by the way.

I think Conte made his position clear from the onset.

Stellini and Mason don't count in my opinion.

One was Conte's man and one is probably a yes man who spies on the first team for the miser.
Wasn't talking about just spurs managers. He went on loan twice, not fancied at all at leeds and Genoa played him LB for most of the season and could have bought him for 8.5m but didn't think he was worth it.

I think the loans were never intended to broker a deal to sell Spence.

Daniel Farke had Spence at Leeds and the same playbook prevailed as the one when Farke 'looked after' Marcus Edwards at Norwich.

Spence was probably pissed off, during this period, for no other reason than he knew he was the best full back at Spurs, just like we do now, and couldn't understand why a football club would prefer to loan out their better players than actually play them in the first team.

The only person at THFC with an attitude problem is Daniel Greedy.

He has an indifferent attitude towards creating a successful team.

Genoa had a option to buy for 8.5m there was no brokering needed if they thought he was decent.

I'm glad it's working out well for him, I've always liked him and wanted him to succeed. He hadn't for a lot of managers that were not under this ownership.

Maybe Spurs never wanted to sell Spence?

My point has been that Spence is clearly better than Royal, Porro and Udogie.

Spence clearly should have been in this team for the last two seasons.

If Genoa genuinely had that option in place then I would suggest that whoever inserted that should lose their job?

Does that sound reasonable?

Not really reasonable as it looks to me you are looking at how good Spence is now and ignoring how he made little impact under many other clubs and managers since we bought him.

I would say the person at Genoa who tried to go below the 8.5m and didn't think he was worth that should lose their job. Perhaps it shows he wasn't that good there

Players can get better either change in attitude, system or a Manager who gets the best out of them forced via injury or otherwise.

I am glad this is the case

So you are asserting that Spence having the ambition to want to leave Boro, via a loan to Forest and subsequent transfer to Spurs, who were one of several Premier League clubs interested in signing Spence at that time, suggests that Spence had an attitude problem?

Are you also suggesting that Spurs not picking Spence for the first team and loaning him out to the Championship, where he got virtually no game time, and Italy with a low option to buy, reflects well on THFC in any way shape or form?

How can Spence be to blame for any of what has prevailed?

He was a young player, with ambition and ability, when he arrived at THFC.

He has been treated like shit and badly managed while having his character assassinated publicly by rumours.

Meanwhile Pedro fucking Porro needs a rest.

No I never said any of that.

No I never said any of that.
In my opinion you seem to have bought the bad attitude rumours from what you have written.

I only care about Spurs and I do not accept that Spence has become a better player than the one who arrived at Spurs due to the way Spurs have treated him.

Spence has been denied the opportunity to show his worth to this team for 18 months in my opinion.

That is all that matters.

As a footballer Spence is miles ahead of Royal, Porro and Udogie.

How have Spurs helped Spence to achieve his ambitions?
