AVB - where to start?
Tactically bonkers. Played the high line at Chavski, with an ageing and not quick Terry (rinse mouth out with soap and puke). I think thats the only time since the ark that they lost to the Arse (3-5 at home, absolute battering).
Team selection. Season 1, the team selected itself. Season 2, awful. If no badges Timmy could replace him and instantly turn things around by picking people on form rather than on whether they wear a beeney to training, that's all you need to know. BTW he was given a bit of a hint by Levy on that one, along the lines of "we're not scoring very many goals at all, do you want to reconsider your decision not to select our favourite mercenary rather than having him warm the sofa at home for £100k a week?"
Man management. for evidence, Chavs and Spurs. 2 clubs with a good squad at the time. See above, "beeney".
Inflexible. My way or no way. No flexibility of tactics. No Plan B. So.....
...if things go pear-shaped, he can't turn it around. And they will go pear shaped at some stage, they always do. AVB will turn that into a crisis.
Boredom. In his final part-season, there were only 2 games that I would in hindsight have paid money to go to (Chavs 1-1, Manure 2-2). Actually, I wouldn't have watched the others for free.
Pressure. He can't handle it. Telling the press that the fans should sing more at WHL was just an embarrassment. No inkling that fans tend not to sing at events like paint drying, grass growing etc. By the time he walked away, he looked like death. (and we did sing btw).
He got one thing right I thought. He didn't throw Lloris straight into the first team. People thought it barking, but it meant that his first exposure to the brawl that is the PL wasnt with a team that was 1/3rd new and with no experience of the PL themselves. He eased him in, which I think gave him a bit of protection initially. If he'd made a ricket in the first game (like Thorsvedt did), then the press would have scented blood.
Nice guy I'm sure. And I loved the way he celebrated goals. But managing a PL footie club requires more than that.
Avoid.
