Against Finland, which won't be a walk in the park on their own pitch, we need to go back to two midfielders, and full-backs who can defend.

Pickford (although he deserved to be dropped)

Colwill
Stones
Guehi
Walker

Gomes
Rice
Bellingham

Saka
Palmer

Kane

I still see Trent Alexander-Arnold as a massive luxury player. It's like playing David Beckham at right-back.

Palmer is currently the best player in the world but seemed off.

We are really crap at getting players to be their club selves.
Partly the problem last night was playing whatever wanky formation that was and then sticking to it for 80 minutes despite it clearly not working.

I mean, when I saw the line up I assumed it would at least be Palmer in the false #9, Bellingham in the pivot. But Palmer in the pivot? What the fuck was that?

Palmer has proved he can basically play anywhere across the front line and is most dangerous when you have him close to the goal. So big brain Carsley decides to have him deep and dictating the play next to Declan Rice. Bizarre.

That then also provides the problem that Palmer isn't very good defensively - nor, for that matter, are either of our fullbacks - so when we lost the ball and Greece counter attacked they had basically a free run through our entire midfield. And over the top of our fullbacks who for some reason seemed to both be playing inverted (ring any bells?). Absolute mess all round.

To me, it should have been obvious by at least half time that we should drop Foden, who's yet again done fuck all in an England shirt, move Palmer back to the #10, Jude back to the pivot, and play an actual #9 like Solanke rather than whatever false #9 mess we ended up with.

But that would require a manager with the balls to actually build a balanced team, rather than shoehorn all our stars into the same midfield as if he were a 12 year old playing Fantasy Football.

The subs were if anything even worse. He finally brings on a striker only to sub off Gordon and move Madueke over to the left? The fuck? Anyone who's ever watched Madueke for more than about 5 minutes knows he's absolutely useless if he's anywhere other than the right wing.

Then finally the stadium is put out of its misery when Carlsberg shanks Foden, and we're all waiting for Palmer to be deployed in the #10 where he's most dangerous, only for Carsley to bring on another striker and go 4-4-bloody-2 😂 Couldn't make it up. Utter nonsense.

Please, please can we go and hire a manager with a modicum of common sense? We've just put up with a decade of Hodgson and Southgate, Potter and Howe are right fucking there, Tuchel even, anyone, PLEASE.

At least he’s not a stubborn, rigid dullard that doesn’t try anything or deviate - it’s a shit friendly in reality so makes sense to try and build a style of play. It was poor but I doubt he wil persevere…. They target is to find a balanced style by the next tournament, not smash Finland. The country and media need to give Eng managers space to breathe and make mistakes in qualifiers and friendlies

You have to give Greece credit they gave absolutely everything.

I like we don’t have to watch Southgateball now but I am not convinced of Carsley at all. Ignoring the false 9 our pressing structure was wank and that is 100% a manager issue. Whatever you dislike about Ange we are one of if not statistically the best pressing team in the league, England yesterday showed how not to do it.

Even Lee Dixon was calling it out mutiple times. As Rangnick said you either press or you don’t. Our front 4 press but our midfield and defence stayed deep, this allowed Greece to play out and not only that immediately run at our backline. That was total wank and to be frank alarming for a manager to allow.

I seriously hope the FA have people with football brains. Howe and Potter are at least fully proven prem managers, Carlsey is a huge huge gamble and could easily be tactically way out of his depth with this job just like Southgate. Next game if the pressing is still the same structure we cannot give this man the job, it’s such a basic error. If you press the attack, midfield and defence press not just the attack, I was pretty surprised how poor that was.

England FA: do what you did back in the day with Venables and Hoddle, hire a decent proven tactically competent manager with the guts to play the best team and not try and force a team of individuals together.

See, always insulting. He didn't have the same influence on games in the Euros as he does with Chelsea...your shiny objects aside. His play with England has been inconsistent...fair to say the point about travel.

Yes, absolute shit for England...has he ever had a good game?

would the performance be consistent? Not a knock, he's still a young player...jsut a question.

Bellendham was utter shit tonight...stop it! A team cannot be built around him as his influence is only periodically on the scoresheet.

What they need to do is stop trying to shoehorn every supposed good player into the team and instead include complementary skillsets and qualities...you know, a team.

Or not, IDC!
A few of this new generation of brilliant young kids have too high an opinion of themselves….built up by the press. Remember Emma Raducanu!

This has really scuppered the FA plans to sneak through the piss easy fixtures against complete nobodies and then appoint the cheapest possible option. Bastards

I honestly don’t know who they get. If it’s a Lampard or Gerrard I won’t bother with the NT for a good period.

Watching top tier talent get wasted by championship at best level coaches can only be tolerated for so long.

I do find it funny how incredibly unambitious the FA is. You’d think football was just a side hustle for them. They hired Southgate a man good enough to relegate Middlesbrough while playing dogshit football then now get Carsley a man who did well with the U21’s which is basically League 2 level.

I found it weird when Howe and Potter were dismissed by some posters. Both of them are far more proven tactical managers than Southgate or Carsely. They have set up and coached decent football against elite premier league teams with often limited resources. There isn’t a comparison against the levels they have operated at.

If it isn’t Howe or Potter and we go for a foreign coach then some of Rangnicks level would do. Howe for me makes most sense as with Newcastle he got them playing good football immediately, he is very flexible and has good instincts, the closest thing to a Harry Redknapp of modern football.

The FA are a bunch of doddery old fuckers probably enjoying a comfy role with lots of lovely meals out where they spend hours discussing which cheap option they can promote.

It’ll be a mate who gets the job. They probably have Lampard on speed dial.

Carsely made such a hash of it last night with the formation and pressing set-up that you wonder if their plan to just install him whatever might now have fucked up. Lampard though be just another champo manager.

Ermmmm he didn’t have the same influence because he was used as a sub. Whenever he came on he was excellent. Did you even watch the games? Shiny objects .. fuck off, an equalising goal against Spain in a Euros final and you act like it’s nothing.

He was good against the Netherlands. Otherwise no.

Yes. Palmer is already world class. What he is doing to the premier league currently is unprecedented.

No he wasn’t. He was everywhere and scored a fantastic goal. He should also have had an assist.

‘Supposed’ good players ruin an otherwise half decent final point .. yes we should stop doing this. If you think Bellingham, Palmer, Saka etc are only ‘supposed’ good players though you’re beyond reason.
Palmer is NOT world class already. This is why England repeatedly fail I feel so sorry for the kid. He's had an exceptional season.and a bit but he is not the best player in the world FFS!! Arrgh! I recall Mason Mount getting this same treatment one goal in semi final doesn't mean a thing ditto Ollie Watkins but these kids have no chance because England fans just go overboard and then inevitably feel let down.

Said it before saying it again this list of world class footballers their fans think exsist is a fiction. I personally think the window has closed on the opportunity to win a world or Euro's now it will be another decade before it presents itself. The three or four genuinely international level players we possessed are approching the end of their careers and the lack of a coaching identity still has not been resolved. A massive switch in the mentality of the fans and players is still required imho. But short term to stay competitive we will have squeeze the pips of Kane Walker Stones.

Comparing Cole Palmer to Mount is hilarious man.

6 goals 5 assists in 7 games this season. That’s a decent whole season for Mount. 22 goals 12 assists last season.

He has literally carried his team on his back in a way I haven’t seen an individual do since Bale for us.

Technically - wow. He is a fucking wizard. Of course he’s already world class.

Three or four genuinely international level footballers? Get a grip man… Christ. We have a full squad of players who star in the top league and the champions league for the top sides.

Approaching the end of their careers? Who?! Walker who Trent (likely to end up at Madrid!) replaces? Kane? His career still has plenty of legs as a striker. Stones isn’t on the wane.

Beyond that - of course Palmer, Saka, Bellingham, Trent etc are ‘international level’ .. they’re well beyond it! They could all play for any team in the world ffs.

No he is not the best player in the world and statistics for one season are just that. You are a classic example of what I'm talking about, and let's be clear I am telling you people called Mason Mount world class on here and in the media too. I was NOT one of them. Great stats...now do Michael Rickets, Marcus Stewert, and Michael Bridge. Blimey it's crazy how silly football fans have become. Please give these players the chance to hit the wall before you start anointing them in oil and laurel leaves. It's so much part of what's wrong. Palmer was lousy last night like the rest of them let's see how that effects his international form. Because we do not know! You are blinded by EPL hype, and 'starring" in a given club set up means way less at international level that you think.

Uh it’s statistics from two seasons.

Nobody ever thought Mount was ever close to Palmer. Completely different level of footballer hitting completely different numbers.

Palmer is allowed a bad international game. The other week he scored four in a game. I don’t need to wait because like with Bellingham world class is just obvious sometimes. Those two are golden, top tier talents who any country would kill to have.

He really struggled with the press too during the post game press conference. It made for awkward viewing.

Whoever comes in is going to have to be able to handle that aspect of the job well, the English media can be savages

Why do you leave out Rice? It's been two years of you calling Rice WC but you conspicuously leave him out here. Is he no longer the greatest #6 #8 #6 #8 midfielder that's ever lived?
