In all seriousness, why does everyone say we don't spend enough? Over the last 10 years, only United, City, Arse, Chelsea and Newcastle have had a higher net spend than us. We have spent the 8th most in Europe, ahead of Real Madrid, AC Milan, Atletico, Inter, Liverpool, Juventus, Bayern and all the other teams currently above us in the league not already mentioned.

Surely, we clearly spend a lot, we just don't spend well, and that lends itself to our scouting staff and head of recruitment, not Levy. Right?

Agree.

Part of the problem is that we don't pay astronomical wages to exceptional players. So whist we have paid some large fees; and we pay the majority of our squad a fair wage vs our competitors, we are not willing to go that extra step and pay big for 2 or 3 players.

As such, we cannot attract the World Class players, and are left overpaying for mid-level players.

All of our big signings have been flops. Ndombele, Lo Celso, Madisson, Richarlison, Romero. And Solanke, Johnsin, Grey haven't set the world alight.

Our scouts seem to be identifying great young talent, but cannot pick an experienced player for toffee - is this purely down to our wage limitations?

And speak of the devil, out comes the annual proof.

42% wages/turnover ratio, the lowest among top clubs, as we have always been every year without fail under ENIC.

We can all rightfully criticize Ange for any number of things, but the greatest argument for keeping Ange in his seat is that Levy is such a cunt that no manager will work so it really doesn’t matter if it’s Ange or not.

Fine, get rid of Ange and bring in the next poor sucker that is on a ticking clock to getting to go on vacation early with a fat payout.

Don’t get me wrong, there will always be someone who will fill the void but it will never be because they believe in the club and project, only because the payday will be too nice to pass up, that’s it. Even then we will miss out of actually promising managers because they will know what a toxic and dead end role they have to look forward to.

We don't spend on wages so we're not attracting quality.

And as for your last point, Levy is ultimately responsible. He's been at the helm a quarter of a century, he's running out of people to hide behind.

I also think there’s no insight by staff regarding players mental strength . To get to the level they are takes a lot of determination & ambition but many think “ I’ve made it “ & comfort sets in . Spurs seems a very comfortable place , you get the odd super driven player but they generally see the issues & move on , Modric , Bale & even Kane ( he was incredibly loyal to us though at his own careers detriment )

We’ve had plenty of talented players , Dele , Madders , Tanguy etc who see the clubs psyche & put their slippers on . This is because of the clubs attitude towards football from the top. Lack of ambition . We’ve got a new bunch of young driven talent in Bergvall & Grey who will either move on to a club who has true ambition or eventually settle in to the clubs mentality & we’ll witness a few more Dele’s. Personally, I think they are very driven & go elsewhere

That is why the club needs change at the top

Great post 👏

42% does seem to be the outlier here. Certainly room to manoeuvre one would hope.

Saying that, the £100m difference between us and Liverpool & Woolwich is 10 players on £200k per week. Obviously just on salaries. It’s a fair whack of cash for us to make up, particularly without CL football.

Did also note that it’s our commercial activity that’s keeping us where we are. At least we are seeing some evidence of positive effect from our events, brand partnerships, etc. Just need to spend the money now….

Generational talents like those you have mentioned will always want to move on from us. The likes of Real, Barcelona and Bayern will be lights to a moth due to their history and power. It’d take us a couple of decades of being the top, or one of the top teams in Europe for us to enjoy a similar reputation.

I do think though that we tend to seem to collect players who are happy to get to the Spurs level and then relax. I’m not wholly convinced that’s a fault of the owners or Levy, maybe just because that’s the market we are operating in. What could Levy do to show ambition to the players? Provide them the very best facilities? A wonderful stadium to play in? Buy them for large transfer fees? He’s doing all that. Would they be more ambitious if he paid them more? I’d suggest the opposite. Should he make a speech at the start of each month? Again, I’d say that would have the opposite effect.

I’m asking honestly, as I’m never sure what the owners could do to show this ambition everyone says they are lacking. And I mean in practice, not just a vibe or attitude.

Alli had a painkiller addiction after getting injured that all but ruined his career
