The funny thing about this club is we have gone from the most attacking manager in the clubs history in Ange to the most defensive one in the clubs history in Frank.

That can’t be good for squad building/composition.

I wouldn’t even call Frank’s football defensive. We are literally conceding two goals a game and countless chances.

It’s more like we went from an extreme idealist in Ange to a man who has literally no idea how to play any kind of football at all.

The weird thing is that he wouldn't be out of a job if he had finished top 8 - no chance.
Therefore, moaning about signing 400m worth of players he listed as if that is the difference between finishing 17th and top 8 would be very odd, but he's wording it like he finished 5th again and needed that extra push.

Where is the praise for spending £50m on Johnson, who was a very effective player in his system, or Maddison, Van de Ven etc.? Who was going to get dropped for all of those players he listed? Son? The £50m Johnson?

It's piss easy to come up with fantasy solutions when you don't actually have to deliver them with all of the problems you'd have to actually deal with in reality.
We certainly had a top half of the table team last season without the players he listed.

It is bizarre though that he needed those four players to avoid being 17th in the league, the more one thinks about it, the weirder it is.

Even the worst manager in the world could claim if I had xyz players things would have been different.

He may as well have said if he had prime Messi, Ronaldo et al, he would have the team above 17th in the league, as if that's what it would take.

No he didn't. Most of them were injured.

I don’t actually think Frank is that defensive. His Brentford were pragmatic, more than staunchly negative.

But he obviously has zero ability to coach effective, possession based attacking football where the ball is quickly progressed through the midfield, with a 10 as the key focus. For example, he didn’t have a clue what to do with someone like Bergvall.

But he could end up doing a perfectly ok job at another side with a different set of players.

I do think that Frank will have it a bit harder than for example Nuno based on some of the news trickling out from his sacking.

Frank seemed unprepared for a lot of the duties that is expected of a manager at most clubs like player discipline for example because at Brentford they have someone on the club staff that deals with that.

He'll find another job of course but he isn't as battle tested as a traditional manager is and seems to have mainly just been allowed to focus on the football.

Lets bring back Thomas Frank then!

Joking apart, the point is at the end of the summer transfer window we didn't have all those injuries, so should have expected to have finished the season above 17th without the players he listed that he wanted to sign.

So his excuse is the injuries not the transfers.

On matchday 12 of the 24/25 season Tottenham beat Man City 1-4 to move to 6th on the table. 4 points off 2nd place with a G/D of +14 (for comparison City in 2nd position had a G/D of +5).

Half an hour after the end of that game it was revealed that Vicario had a broken foot. With Romero and VDV already out with injury and Udogie subbed off in that game for an injury - the first choice Back 5 would not play together in the league again.

They would only play together in the Europa League from late March onward. When they did play together Tottenham didn't lose a game and went on to win the Trophy.

I think it's fair to say Postecoglou was certainly doing well enough at that time and that injury and lack of depth in the squad was the reason for the collapse in the league that would follow. 🤷‍♂️

Exactly. We could all sit here and say "I could win the league with spurs if I had all the best players in the league/world to pick from".

I don't quite understand where the ego sits if you can't make something special with your own coaching/tactical abilities.

It's hardly one-off managerial ability to set up players for suicidal gung-ho football and, when other teams figure it out, say "well if I had two van de vens with adamanium hamstrings then we wouldn't concede", or to say "Well if I had Messi up front then we wouldn't need a high xG".

We may as well declare Ossie as a managerial genius that was just lacking investment, if that's the case

He's on about he got three kids, but Bergvall was voted the player of the season,. Gray generally applauded, I'm not sure who the other one is?

He had depth at the start of the season, it's not depth he's crying about it's upgrades.

What Ange did not say was why the club did not buy any of those players.
Was it
1 Transfer fee too high
2 Wages too high
3 Club refused to sell
4 Player would not go to us
5 Hierarchy/Levy did not rate the player
Last summer we lost players because of 3 & 4 which is not the club's fault and we had CL football & a trophy which we did not have the year before.

He said it was wages we weren't competitive on.
