The same seasons where Woolwich were in a similar position but managed to turn it around?

Those were two seasons under Mourinho during Covid. We were nowhere near that last season and are nearly double digits above 10th this season when we’re in a crisis.

We have a good squad and based on the people we’re linked with will probably get a decent manager this summer who will actually set the team up to play football.

We have and will spend enough that we won’t be dropping down to mid table

So? Woolwich turning it around doesn't mean we will.

We were like that for two seasons in a row ffs. We were 5 points clear of Burnley in 10th in 19/20 as well. Right now we're clear, guess why? Liverpool & Chelsea are in a crisis too. That's the sole reason why.

This wilful ignorance that mid-table just COULDN'T happen to us is incredible. Chelsea are in mid-table, Liverpool are basically there too, and their peaks/spending are far higher than ours.

We're neck & neck with the Brighton's and the Villa's this season. Usually that = 8th or 9th placed battle, it's nothing but luck that it hasn't. If we're the same next season & Liverpool/Chelsea improve, we'll be right there.

Why hasn't anyone confronted Levy like this?

You never go anywhere near the stadium
Not too sure this would be up Dan's street if I'm honest.
But on a serious note, for this to grab the attention of Joe Lewis it needs to go up a level.
Protesting outside won't be enough, but strong protests like what Valencia have done, could cause him to rethink about Levys position.
In any case, the voices need to get louder and more hostile, if, us fans want to initiate change.

It also doesn’t mean that we won’t turn it around. The point was to give some perspective and show that things are almost never as bad as they’re made out to be.

We’re clear based on merit, not because of Chelsea or liverpool. Our current points total at this stage of the season would have is at 5th or 6th in any other season.

I’m not saying midtable is impossible, I’m not even saying we might not have a season like the one liverpool are having. I’m saying that the chances of us fading to mid table obscurity are slim.

Brighton and Villa are having very good seasons, which is why they aren’t fighting for 8th or 9th. It’s based on merit, not luck.

Every team will spend this summer, including us. It’s a pretty common talking point that next season is always the one where we’ll fall behind everyone.

Except when they are. Woolwich spent a long time in relative wilderness (incl back to back seasons finishing 8th) and their peak was MUCH higher than our peak.

They're just not slim though, are they? With Son & Kane in the team we were 3 & 5 points off mid-table respectively. So when Kane leaves and Son further enters decline, the chances become more & more realistic.

I guess we can be 7th or 8th based on merit this season, because that's where we're ending up. All thanks to Kane, who can't wait to get out of this shitshow. But I guess we'll spend in the summer** so it's ok.

*** Not much, considering zero European football beckons, and we'll pay out for Kulu and Porro.

I don’t know why you keep on mentioning those seasons under Mourinho when we’ve improved since then. I thought we were headed in that direction under Nuno and all it took was a change in manager to get top 4.

We’re getting a new manager and based on who we’re linked with it’s actually someone who sets the team up to play football.

Add to that a GK,CB and an AM (positions we’ve been linked with) we will be alright. Kane’s gone but I don’t see why if Richarlison is striker he can’t get at least 10 premier league goals. Also the new manager will probably use Son properly. I can see him getting an extra 10 goals.

So no I don’t see how we’re sinking to mid table obscurity.

Fundamentally because I disagree we've improved. Which like, watch us lately and I think its a valid opinion, since we're losing to Bournemouth at home. A new manager might be more entertaining/progressive but despite his faults, Conte squeezed every drop out of the team to get it fourth, and it basically needed Son & kane being the best duo in the whole league to achieve it. Like, Kane back to peak form and Son winning a GB.

Ok, the squad still sucks.

Son's only going downhill from here & Richarlison getting less than half (or possibly 1/3) of Kane's league goals is not inspiring.

I do.

The piece you're missing:

Conte is an extraordinary manager, did remarkably well for a sustained period, and we have no chance of bringing in a manager of that quality again.

You got a preview last weekend. Without a singular genius of defensive football we're going to start leaking a flood of goals.

There seems to be a strange idea going around that Conte sucks, and was the one holding us back. Despite us being abysmal before he got here. I'm no Conte fan (I hate defensive football) but its pretty clear he's a top level coach, and getting us top 4 was miraculous. We rode the wave of 2 Jan signings who had a big impact and Son/Kane finishing everything in sight.

I want a more attacking coach, but the idea that all we need is some manager to waltz in and want us to play on the front-foot is laughable. The squad has so many fucking holes in it that its hilarious. It was 100% propped up by two prime world-class players with Conte putting up a decent defence behind them.

Conte was good for us in that period but turned into Tony Pulis this season. I do think the next manager will be an improvement from what we’ve gotten from Conte this season. Even then we were in a top 4 race.

We have one of the worst defensive records this season even with Conte. It didn’t just start last week.

It's funny how no one can believe Spurs are in 5th given how terribly we've played.

16 wins from 31 in the league.

All amid the chaos of a death on the coaching staff, Conte's surgery, the whole Paratici affair.

Conte didn't want to be here and that was always going to be a poisonous dynamic, but he's really a top manager.
