We are building as well. Look at all the young players on loan many of whom came to us because of Ange's reputation of giving young players a chance. We have brought in 3 players in the transfer window that should improve the side. I feel I am arguing with a Gooner. This is the ENIC/.Levy thread and there are plenty of reasons to criticise them for but exaggerating a rival over us is not one of them.
Our transfer policy fails because it is not empirically coherent.
- strengthen when in a position of strength.
- have a clear football philosophy independent of the manager you recruit for, see Liverpool, Brighton etc.
- buy a balanced team that has a mixture of youth, experience and leadership.
We have not done this. There is nothing wrong with a youth project but last summer we were 3-4 players short in key roles, LB, LCB, RW and GK backup, you could argue DM and ST as well but we at least had players there even if not good enough and when an injury crisis hits which is almost inevitable with 4 competitions and the high intensity way we play there isn’t the juice to cover it.
As for Woolwich they have shown great ambition in the market with the likes of Rice. In the summer they will probably be get 2-3 elite players to try and actually win a trophy. Think they have fucked up a bit not getting someone at least on loan to cover the forward line but right now they are shopping in Waitrose and we are shopping in Tescos. Our revenue is similar to Arse and Liverpool so if we have ambition there should be no reason we aren’t at their level and as we are not we should be looking to get there in at least 2-3 seasons. We aren’t punching our weight for our current size.
