The defence of ENIC was always so pathetic. A club that had been very successful from the 50’s to 80’s and just had a bad period in the 90’s and yet the entirety of ENIC’s defence was well it’s not as bad as Sugar and the 90’s.

That might have been ok for 10-15 years but it’s quarter of a century since the 90’s. It was always such a loser defence. A this is as good as it gets defence. Let’s overlook the terrible scouting, the total lack of a football strategy, the constant lowballing on players we need all because it’s slightly better than Sugar.

ENIC are so lucky they took over the club from Sugar and not after the 60’s or 80’s. The expectations were much lower. It’s kind of like the reverse of Fergie at United, it’s horrible to follow a winner but easy to follow someone who was crap.

Alan Sugar made their life easy. Long as we are better than someone who is totally sh*t. guess what we are actually worse than Sugar now.

ENIC were always continuity Sugar.

It is often overlooked how Sugar remained involved until 2007.

The anger by 2001, regarding Sugar's ownership of Spurs, had reached such a level that Sugar could no longer officially remain as chairman.

I would love anyone on here to explain to me exactly how ENIC, under Levy, operated in a different way to Sugar?

Even Levy's mate, Simon Jordan, has conceded this truth.

Levy got it in the neck... Sugar got it while he was ALSO destroying us from the inside...

We just need a hierarchy that love TOTTENHAM more than (or at least as much as) they love money!

The only thing I noticed is that Sugar signed some top attacking players in their prime.

I don't recall ENIC under Levy doing that, well the only exception I can think of is Van de Vaart.

So it could be ENIC being an investment company are more likely to invest in potential than a finished product.

If I'm wrong then so be it, that's just how I remember.

Levy's only period of sustained improvement on the past, in respect of recruitment and subsequently pushing Spurs forward, was his plundering of Leeds, West Ham and Nottingham Forest, for their best players, during periods of relegation and financial problems.

The recruitment of Robinson, Lennon, Keane, Carrick, Kanoute, Defoe, Dawson and Reid, at knockdown prices, with some wages being paid into the bargain, was the secret of Levy's initial period of actually improving Spurs from the position we were in under Sugar.

It took 5 years for that to happen.

Once Spurs reached 5th place in the league, using these methods, Levy then became above average at being the best of the rest. This was during a period when Man United, Liverpool, Woolwich and Chelsea were generally buying the best ready made players for now. This was also before the emergence of Man City.

The Brightons, Brentfords, Villas, Newcastles and now Sunderlands are all better than Spurs at being the best of the rest in 2026.

Levy lost his way and became yesterdays man.

Sadly; Joe Lewis didn't care enough to do something about that until it was too late.

He said the new stadium would be a game changer but the players that were being signed such as Steven Bergwijn, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon, and a few others, didn't really back that notion with any substance.

IIRC Ndombele and Lo Celso were signed before the new stadium was open.

I can't think of any great players, or even very good ones, that have arrived at the club since it opened?

Kulusevski, Maddison, probably the best? Hardly going to be club legends are they.

True but Sugar stopped signing top players after Klinsmann wriggled away. 'No more Carlos Kick-a-Balls' in his words.

Ginola was an exception but he was dirt cheap. Sugar only ever really stumped up money for a washed up Ferdinand and the ill-suited Rebrov. No ambition otherwise in his signings.
 
Sugar was the beginning of the demise of once a proud football club. The guy is an attention hog, a Jerry Jones type of character.
The worst thing to happen to us entering the new era of Premier League was to have this guy in charge. You needed smart people to transition the club to this new football model. Add to that his farewell gift as he stepped away is giving the key to ENIC.
It's not 25 years of failure, it is 35 years. I remember in the 80s we used to be in the conversation of at least one trophy EVERY single season. Yes, we were not competing for the league title, but there is always a cup final to look for, at least 1. Since the 91 FA cup, it was downhill to mediocrity. Now we are a laughing stock, a joke in the football world. Look what Conte and Chiellini said how we are looked at around Europe. That's the legacy Sugar built and ENIC solidified.

Sugar really did start all this... The financial mess we got into when we had Venables ...
The 1991 Cup win overshadowed by Gazza's injury (the very start of our injury curse as far as I'm concerned)
The Hummel venture ... So so much of that era was tacky, cheap and ill thought out....

Then he sold us to ENIC, and the rest is fucking history!

In a bizarre way Irving Scholar was a true visionary : Executive Boxes , floating the Club on the LSE , buying Ticketmaster and the company that supplied our kit etc .

Trouble was he couldn’t fully execute any of his grand plans ( cf look what Ticketmaster and Hummel are worth today . And count on your fingers those clubs that don’t do corporate“ entertainment “ ) .

It became a financial shitshow ;then Sugar
( the Piranha ) smelled blood , became s born-again Spurs fan and fucked about a bit . And then fell out with Tel .

And then the real Sharks smelled blood and arrived. With Uncle Joe’s money
( ready/cash ) to back them up . What could possibly go wrong..

And the rest is history mon ami .
