The reason that the Tories are considering adopting these policies is due to Farage and Reform UK.
Farage is focussed on the ECHR in exactly the same way he was focussed on leaving the EU.
Reform UK are organising nationally at the moment.
Their aim is to contest local elections this year and any general election.
They claim to have candidates in place.
The Tories in the Conservative Party know that their vote will collapse if they don't 'talk tough' on certain issues.
The Tories, in the new New Labour Party, are worried that Conservative voters, who may have considered holding their nose and voting for Sir Starmer at the next general election, may find it easier to vote for Reform UK; especially if Farage jumps back on board.
From new New Labour's point of view there is the further possibility that all the red wall and working class 'thickies', who voted to leave in the referendum and the Brexit Party in the 2019 European Parliament elections, may also be tempted to jump on board with Reform UK.
Looking at the Reform manifesto you can understand the fears of Tory liberals.
