Competition Growth in MLS

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I just read the other day that City earned a similar amount from their broadcasting rights last season as all 29 teams in MLS combined earned from their media rights.

Yeah, it's all about TV revenue now. Until US viewers start tuning into MLS matches in significant numbers there will never be enough money to compete with European leagues.

But, if people ever do, the money will explode.

As percentage of the total US population, it's not that high to be honest.
Not at all, that's the US' advantage (in many things to be fair). Population and scale of Europe combined, football doesn't have to be the top sport to financially dwarf many of the European leagues.

I expect the PL is unassailable at the moment, but if the MLS ever captured even 1/2 of the NBA's domestic TV audience the wages would likely overtake all but Bayern, Madrid, and Barca.

Y'know something the genuinely, like MLB-NBA grade enormous ratings for some of the marquee games of Caitlin Clark's career has beaten into my head compared to big soccer moments be it MLS, USMNT, Champions League, whatever, is that while the subculture has blossomed beyond all imagination, it is still just reality that most Americans aren't into soccer.

MLS as a television property has been massively mismanaged throughout its history. Putting the cup final up against the SEC championship is unabashedly stupid.

But even throughout the years, there's never been a solid effort to build the property by promoting a showcase date/time. Even the NFL had to start with a single live game every Sunday afternoon and build the audience from there. Same for the NBA. MLS has always had a scattergun approach, with the television slots and partners constantly changing. And they have never been good at story building.

They don't even get the US soccer fans, I can't tell you when the last time I watched a MLS match. Most US PL supporters I know are the same way.

But the attendance figures are strong, and if I had an MLS club in town I would go to every match. Sadly, the MLS can't even successfully convert MLS fans into MLS viewers it seems.

MLS is great at being enjoyed, terrible at being cared about.

A fun day out in the summer at prices below the Big Four, versus I gotta watch the big away match because the stakes are huge and it's what everyone will be talking about.

I've never watched an MLS game. I legit don't even know when they play, or even when their season runs.

I think MLS really shot itself in the foot with the Apple TV deal.
Both Apple TV itself (which has nothing but star-studded critically-acclaimed programming at a low price and still no one subscribes) and the way in which they've programmed and priced the MLS package are very inexplicable hinderances.

I don't think staying on cable TV was a panacea though, that industry is collapsing and that avenue would be taken away from them one way or another over the next decade.

Going to the game is fun and the quality is a heck of a lot better than it used to be.

While it's not exactly a fair competition given the decade and a half head start and richer owners MLS has, here's a chance for the pro/rel to prove its positive effects are more than just a myth rooted in nostalgia.

My hypothesis - this will be the death of the USL and prove that pro/rel is just that...romantic nostalgia who's importance is greatly exaggerated.

What makes a better league? Having the most money to pay the best players. End of discussion.

This doesn't mean anything, because TV ratings are what matter and drive revenue in the 21st century. But it's pretty incredible to think about, still.

The US Sports TV rights market is worth more than the rest of the world combined. Double IIRC.

Let that sink in. Wont be long before their TV deal skyrockets. Then its Euro superleague time as a way of competing.

Growth in the MLS

Messi's team & let's face IT IS Messi FC got a new kit - an abomination that's a Pink Version of the International Argentine Kit...again if someone tells me the MLS has it's OWN identity I'm going to piss myself laughing...

This sums up the MLS - something that you know but just knockoff...

'oh buh buh the tripes are different n buh buh' it's not - stop it we ALL know what's going on here & to be honest this is fukkin member berry bullshit...

No one watches Apple TV they never have it failed & will continue to fail like their music streaming...

Heard about USL news now - if the MLS & the USL weren't STUPID but they are due to major flaws in both visions - they would join forces in way that a USL teams face off against MLS in a domestic cup I mean y'know kinda like the FA Cup??? wow a tried & tested formula for over 100years but no they want to keep it fragmented cos who doesn't want more games with higher stakes with a competitive edge???

The USA is treating the beautiful game like damn a circus...

It will fracture Football Fans further & give international 'fans' less interested in the game...

Also fukk the USSF...but hey I also hate FIFA as well so...

I've heard a lot of criticisms of MLS, but this is a new one.

Stripes, famously a rare design element of a football kit, known only to the Argentine National Team.
